The real life ASI fault scenarios are:

  • - faulty ASI or vacuum lines
  • - blocked pitot tube
  • - blocked static port (from memory on the left side of cowl)
  1. In this in-game scenario as described, it is highly unlikely to be the static port as that would also mean your altimeter will become stuck at a certain altitude and your VSI will always indicate zero, while meanwhile your actual IAS will be higher than indicated as you descend and lower than indicated as you climb (as opposed to displaying no IAS at all).
  2. If the Pitot Tube, in game, is not blocked we can also rule that out.
  3. That leaves an ASI fault.  Either modelled in for realism by the developer or a bug that needs addressing.

I'm 99% sure it's the pitot tube blocked. Other people reporting this airspeed problem in their Discord say they forgot to cover the pitot tube. In those cases the only way to unblock it is to restart the flight. A couple guys also reported the cause of their issue was the popped pitot heat circuit breaker, but those were probably flying in cold weather.

That sounds like a very realistic summary and explanation. Thank you very much for that.

It helps a lot to understand what's going on. When encountering the issue the next time, I will simply return to the airfield, clear the tube (= restart the flight) and take off again. As real as it gets.

You can detect the problem before taking off. On the takeoff roll check airspeed alive, if not abort takeoff. 😉
