Question -- would the loss of useful panning be the same as when using a Track IR5?  If yes, I do have one and can give it a try before making a mistake and buying a tobii that will just end up sitting in a box,

Yeah, the panning motion with both devices will look the same. Try it and see if you like it at 30FPS. But chances are, if you don't mind running your sim at 30FPS, you won't mind panning around at 30FPS either. 

just a question for vrdubin6 - where did you get that neat little tripod - looked in ebay & amazon & can't find anything as neat or as practical as what you have - any info would be greatly appreciated

The magnetic mount just screws right onto the tripod and then the Tobii sticks to the magnet really well.

thx very much for that - found both & ordered the little arm & a telescopic camera tripod from Amazon - my problem was that I was looking for it as one unit - with 2 pieces I can have a nice telescopic tripod that I can use for other stuff as well - once again thx loads for pointing me in the right direction
