RTX 4070 shows only 11 GB RAM in P3D Shift-Z

Recommended Posts

I am a bit irritated.

I have replaced my 1080TI with a RTX4070.

But in P3D (shift-z) the graphics RAM is still shown as 3,5/11 GB used.

Why 11? The new card has got 12 GB.

Also the FPS are pretty much the same level, as I had before with my 1080TI at the same settings.

I expected to see some increase after looking at several performance comparisons.

Thanks,

Michael

That's normal--P3D is showing how much VRAM is available to it...the physical VRAM minus what Windows reserves for itself.

@michael1508, I went from a 1080Ti to a 4090 and okay, it is more powerful than a 4070 but you should see a significant improvement in appearance especially if you have EA enabled.

That imposed too much of a hit before but the 4000 series cards should excel.

But with the 11 GB of if the 1080TI, P3D still showed 11 GB in P3D, and not 10 GB effectively. Is this a rounding issue, or does Windows need more VRAM with the 4070?

@Ray, I do have EA enabled. But performance is the same as with the 1080. Can you elaborate, what you mean with "significant improvement on appearance"? FPS?

Thx

Performance was bad with EA on with the 1080Ti. It just didn’t have the power or features to display the lighting the way the 4000 cards can.

It’s nothing to do with fps. It’s how lighting works. From the appearance of the sun to reflective surface lighting. Surely you can see a difference.

Thanks Ray,

I believe, I can confirm. I've seen some nice nose lights effects from a plane which crossed my way during taxying, which I believe, looked nicer than before.

Maybe the FPS performance is due to the specific type of the RTX 4070 that I got. The MSI Ventus 3x is not the strongest on the market. Or could it have to do with the affinity mask settings?

I followed this thread and have the following settings for my 13900k:

[JobScheduler]
AffinityMask=268391765
P3DCoreAffinityMask=268391765
MainThreadScheduler=0
RenderThreadScheduler=1
FrameWorkerThreadScheduler=2

I saw somewhere, that you're also using Simstarter NG. Peter (Cpt Pero) advised me to start P3D using all cores. From what I understood, after start up of P3D, the above JobScheduler settgings are applied. But I must admit, this is not my area of expertise and I don't understand, how these settings relate to each other. So just curious, which Simstarter Settings you are using.

@michael1508,

I can’t help without knowing your CPU. I’ll post my AM settings tomorrow but from memory all 24 LPs are used. I turned off Hyperthreading as 24 is more than enough.

From yours it looks like you have NT enabled. More tomorrow.

When change your GPU you remove the P3D config and let it build a new one to detect the GPU change.

I use the same values with my i13900K, so this is the same setting for Hyperthreading ON, I got from Steve's advice here.

I switched HT on due to Steve's Affinity Mask recommendation, which are all with HT on. Before I believed HT must be off, which was true for years. But with the new cpu's and P3D5 things may have changed. It runs pretty good on my side with these settings.

Do you use a XMP mode for your RAM? That can give you a lot of power.

GPU

In the BIOS, did you set resizable bar true? Depending on your Motherboard, settings can be a little hidden.

Next point is the pci settings. Check with GPU-Z. You can also see, if resizable bar is enabled.

HHH34OV.gif

In the "Bus Interface" you see "PCIe-16x4.0 @ x16 1.1. This should be the same for your card, especially the x16.

The 1.1 value is during idle. Hitting the ? will start render mode to see the value under load. Then it should be 4.0.

You may want to show us a screenshot of your gpu-z screen.

SimStarterNG uses the AM settings from those that P3D decided on when first launched.

With HT turned off I have 24 VPs. My AM setting is 16777215 for both first fields and 0, 2 and 4 for the threads.

Effectively all 24 VPs are on.

Thank you Ray and Dan!

I also have HT on according to recommendation of SteveW.

PCI settings checked - ok

Resizable BAR - is enabled

XMP mode - not enabled / greyed out in my BIOS. But RAM was shown at 5600 Mhz / in CPU-Z JEDEC profile shows 2800 Mhz.

From what I understand, the 2800 Mhz is 50% of the RAM max speed and needs to be doubled, so it should be ok??

@michael1508, I still don’t know your CPU. I know nothing about XMP.

It's DDR, so it will be running at half the clock speed, so 2800 will be correct for DDR5-5600.

If XMP is disabled, is it safe to assume you have an AMD Ryzen?

You have 2 units of RAM, each one is reported as 2800, so RAM total is 5600.
