Both engines fail?

Recommended Posts

Looking at the Florida/Naples accident, can someone explain how BOTH engines of a business jet can fail....unless, of course, they ran out of fuel..

Based on the amount of flames in the videos I’ve seen, I don’t think they were out of fuel. The CF34 engines are pretty bulletproof - there is no FADEC. The only way to shut them down is to pull the power levers to cutoff, and that requires lifting lock levers.

In normal operation the engines are fed by jet pumps in the main tanks, but if they fail, electric boost pumps immediately come online to maintain fuel pressure.

One thing that could do it is if they ingested a flock of birds.

It's rare, but contaminated fuel can do it too. But it would be wide spread. They used to scare us in the USAF about fuel that you would on load in certain parts of the world. Fuel filter lights would tell you if you had bad fuel if they have that warning system.

I found a video on the net - amazing the crew set it down intact.  That word not allowed wall screwed things up - I think they would have had it down safely it it weren't for that.  I guess they hit a car as well but those move too.

They did a great job honestly - a huge loss of two excellent pilots

Thanks for sharing that Ryan. Tough to watch knowing what the outcome was.

The ATC recordings released immediately following the crash indicated a very professional flight crew...and to see how they attempted a controlled landing in that traffic sustaining no additional ground fatalities is truly remarkable.

RIP to those very brave and skilled pilots.
