GPU Acting Very Strangely - Is It In Trouble?

Ah, glad to hear you seem to have found the cause too Dave. Your 4080 will be 2-3 cm's wider than my 4070 I believe, so can quite see how the power connecter could impinge on the side panel. I wonder if a few dabs of dielectric grease would help in your case too?

That’s a good idea.  As  understand it, dielectric grease helps improve electrical conductivity/ contact?  Certainly wouldn’t hurt to try.

I note in my last post I mentioned a new GPU, that should have said new PSU, that’s what came with the dedicated power cable.

So all was well for the last 2.5 months, then out of nowhere the issue has returned and it seems much worse than it was before, much more frequent.

Just thought I’d check to see if anyone else experienced this issue was able to solve it.  I did buy a replacement power connector from Corsair (my PSU manufacturer) in the hopes that might help.

Beyond that I haven’t been able to find any solutions through google, I’m trying to avoiding an RMA as I don’t want to be without a GPU for a while and given that it is intermittent, I’m concerned about going through the RMA only to not have the issue be reproducible.

Thanks,

Dave

Well, since fitting that 12VHPWR cable, my GPU seems happy for now Dave. No further shutdowns since my last post here at any rate.

Of course, that doesn't help you much, especially since you've replaced your connector. Sorry I can't offer anything more encouraging.

Thanks,

Nick

I had a similar issue in the past week, out of nowhere. I found out that the power connector on my MSI 4080S that combines 3 8-pin power cables into one was coming loose from the gpu. Also the little plastic claw/pin that holds it to the GPU broke off. So I plugged it back in firm and haven't had any issues since. Might need to get a replacement connector at some point but good for now

Thanks guys, doing more reading on this I found that the issue could be the sense pins in the power connector sending erroneous signals.  I bought an aftermarket 12VHPWR cable from Cablesense that claims to address this issue.  Just installed yesterday so will see if his fixes it.

I've hesitated to post this in case I jinx myself, but so far the Cablemod 12VHPWR StealthSense cable seems to have solved my problem.  Fingers crossed!

I was having the same problem with my 4090 and a Cablemod Meshmod kit for my Seasonic PSU.

I ended up replacing the GPU cable with the one from my Seasonic PSU and so far haven’t had any problems.

That’s interesting, I’ve heard of others that had the same experience, I had to go the other way for some reason.  I do wonder if the cable was getting worn out or was defective.

I also ordered another cable from my PSU manufacturer so I have that in reserve should I need it.
