Full Automated Approach - few beginners questions

Featured Replies

Can you help with the option TRAVEL TO and APPROACH? the first complaint would be that, for example, on mobile phones RFS has the option CLOSE APPROACH or something like that and the plane spawns directly in front of the runway and is ready for landing

The second thing I figured out, the autopilot is turned on, approach mode ON, and of course it takes 10-15 minutes for the plane to reach the runway from (I assume) the last navigation point of Laganini, and then the plane is at the wrong angle for landing on the runway, how can I explain , it is not in the plane of the runway, i.e. it does not close an angle of 0' in relation to the runway, but goes towards literally flying over it, closing an angle of 90' in relation to the runway - if I explained correctly

That's strange to me, shouldn't the autopilot do the entire approach and landing by itself if it's turned on? And not to "cut" the runway like this and fly away?

You’re not really giving us much to go on here. What aircraft are you flying and from where are you flying it and what is your destination?

Briefly, an autopilot is a sophisticated collection of electro mechanics but it’s also dumb. You have to tell it what to do, where to go and how to get there.

Depending on the sophistication of the autopilot, you might have to look up the runway's ILS frequency and tune your nav radio to it, then look up the runway's ILS course and set your course knob to that.

It's not enough to just tell the airplane "go to that runway." You have to tell it "approach that runway from this direction and look for the radio signal that will tell you where and how to descend."

To find the information you need, go to airnav.com/airport and enter the airport you want to go to. Then scoll down to the Instrument Procedures section and find the link for the runway you want to use. The resulting chart will tell you what you need to know. The ILS radio frequency is at the top left. The course is immediately to its right.

Some autopilots will figure all this out for you as long as you have chosen the approach you want to fly in their flight computer. For instance if I wanted to land at the Minneapolis airport on runway 12L, I'd enter KMSP as my destination, then open the procedures page, choose "approach," then find the 12L approach I wanted to fly (there may be several). The ILS approach will tell the autopilot to tune the nav radio and set the course for you. All you have to do is get to the initial approach fix at the proper altitude and then select APPR.

Which method you use depends entirely on what equipment the plane you're flying has.  Tell us what you're flying and we can help more.

This. Also, unless you've tuned an ILS, most approaches will have a minimum decision altitude below which you don't receive any guidance because you're supposed to be visual by that point. Finally, some approaches will leave you quite a bit above the field because the approach angle isn't the usual 3 degrees, for any number of reasons.

Good points. Also, whatever you do, don't shoot ILS approaches, especially in IFR conditions, while using the default ATC. That thing will happily vector you in so you're 8,000 feet above the runway over the threshold. 😉

Hi guys and thanks a lot for all your help!

Today the game really got on my nerves, I'm struggling with the help of the autopilot and APPROACH MODE - ON to approach the runway in the correct way and try to "aim" the plane correctly on the runway and even to land on it with the help of the autopilot, but I'm not succeeding...

When I go to TRAVEL TO -> DESCENT, it's too far from the runway, and when I go to APPROACH, it's too close and I don't manage to maneuver the plane

Point of departure: Ljubljana, Slovenia, LJLJ
Destination: Zagreb, Croatia, LDZA
Airplane: Airbus A320neo
How to play: via keyboard and mouse (I also have a Logitech Xbox joystick connected to the PC I play MFS2020 on)

I'm a beginner and I'm struggling with basic keyboard commands, commands and keys

Problem: the plane always "cuts" my runway, even when the autopilot is on and the APPROACH MODE ON option is on, I don't understand how to properly communicate with ATC and get specific instructions from them, as well as at what time is the time for a certain descent (e.g. if I am 30 minutes away from the end point, at what altitude should I be and how many m/s should my DESCENT be?)

Here's what I found online about the LDZA destination:

https://www.pilotnav.com/airport/LDZA
https://www.crocontrol.hr/UserDocsImages/AIS produkti/eAIP/2024-02-22-AIRAC/html/eAIP/LD-AD-2.LDZA-en-HR.html

P.S. as far as I can see, LDZA has two runways? 04 and 23?

You're really asking very basic questions here, and I think it's hard to explain all this within a forum. I suggest you download the (free) A32NX, which is a major upgrade over the really bad and non-functioning default A320neo. Then you read the step-by-step guide: https://docs.flybywiresim.com/
Also watch some youtube videos of people flying the A32NX in MSFS, preferably real pilots.

It will take some time to get into airliner flying, and it's a continuos learning process, so one step after nother. But don't worry, it's a lot of fun and a great accomplishment!

For transparency: I'm a community mentor at the BATC discord. However, I do not get paid for it in any way.
