April 4, 20242 yr On the Descent page of Boeing aircraft, it is customary to change the default speeds prior to leaving cruise altitude (we typically do it on the ground before departure). For instance, in the B737, we set .78/280 for our descents. Does anyone know what the correct speeds should be for the B787 Dreamliner? Quick and dirty answer, we leave the aircraft alone based on CI. In a busy environment, we use .840/310, .850/330, or whatever ATC or STAR restriction. You can change the default descent speeds on the FMS VNAV page (Descent), but in any case the speedbrakes do an excellent job in slowing down the aircraft if needed. As I mentioned we let it go by the CI, on departers, you see somewhere between 340/.850 or 350/.860 up to the transition to the Mach#, or 310/.850 max if turbulence. On descent most of the time we find ourselves speed-limited by ATC or STAR. I wasn't too long on the 787 (1 year or so) but on the 748 is a constant heated discussion about our speeds. 747 Captain for the last 39 years, and still learning.
