How to copy fsx installation from one pc to another

Featured Replies

Exactly as title says, I have gotten this to work before but every single time I do this it says that it was unable to load some program files and to reinstall. I use FSX SE, so I install and run and works fine, then I simply move the other files and DO NOT overwrite anything, and then it somehow makes it unable to load, uninstalling and reinstalling without removing the non default files does not work. I am completely stumped with this, unless somehow the files themselves are corrupt from the copying process, I have no clue what would trigger this. For clarity, I FSX runs just fine on my other pc, just somehow the exact same setup fails when put on my laptop. If anyone would know how to fix this I would greatly appreciate it.

If you could just copy and paste an FSX installation to another PC it would make a mockery of protection against piracy. Why do you need to move the install to another PC?

Just uninstall on the old one and install on the new providing your serial number when prompted.

Its not the FSX itself, I know I cannot copy and paste that directly lol. I mean like add on files, freeware not payware ones. FSX runs fine when installed without any add ons, however my issue is that the simple copying of add on files triggers it to crash for some reason. I dont understand why it would not work on another computer, and again, I have done this before. I do not think the issue is the FSX install itself, its something to do with the add on files, be it airplanes or scenery, something makes FSX unable to start, when alone in the same computer it works just fine.

Some specific examples are needed here.  There is such a wide variety of add-ons, which hook into the sim in many different ways, that there is no one-size-fits-all answer.

@Ray ProudfootIt's OK to install FSX-SE (or any other Steam title) on as many computers as one desires, as Steam's online runtime serves as the real-time copy protection and will prevent a user from running more than one copy registered to that Steam account at any given time.

Hard to give specific examples, I have a lot of stuff lol, but I never have seen it go past 1-5 seconds before giving the error. I think that rules out simobjects, scenery and anything that takes time to load. I do not know what triggers it, maybe a dll somewhere since (I think) that starts up first but also its supposed to be on the dll.xml I think, which is as steam installs it, unless it reads the FSX directory first. But I still cannot figure out even where to start. No event viewer crash, nothing to trace the issue to a certain file. But the stupidly confusing part is that, I have installed FSX over my current install on pc 1 my desktop, never anything like this, I have had the files there for many years, but copy the same exact files, barring the base game files, and it refuses to load. Maybe its a registry problem but I don't know. If it matters its on C : drive so maybe its a windows or av issue.

That’s the impression you gave from your post. I imagine some 3rd party developers also have copy protection to prevent piracy. I once tried to copy one purchased airport from a backup to a new computer. The result was it consuming all RAM until P3D crashed.

Installing via the setup exe solved the problem.

I've always rebuilt my config when moving any ESP-based sim to a new PC.  It could be lots of things--a different path somewhere (eg in the scenery.cfg), or file(s) missing, or a boogered-up terrain.cfg, etc.

Best bet is to rebuild Rome from the ground up, starting with a clean install of the sim, then each version of the SDK in order, then any adds to the fsx.cfg, then add-ons one by one.

ESP? What is that?

Alright. I already figured out the problem to be traced to files in the FSX main folder. I am not yet testing which ones specifically but my feelings are probably its a dll or addon configuration file.

I remember some freeware addon aircraft include a sound.dll that needs to be in the main FSX folder.  If it's not there, then
the Sim will crash when you hit the "Fly Now" tab.

ESP is the Microsoft simulation platform that underlies the MS Flight Simulator product line that preceded the current Asobo-developed MSFS (e.g. FS98/2000/2002/2004, FSX, FSX-SE) and all versions of Prepar3D.

Yes I have those dlls. Also gaugesound.all missing causes crashes too, however in this case FSX would just say its missing files the moment I installed it. My suspicions are on a dll causing problems in there, since I have had instances where loading a dll just crashes the game entirely.

Thank you, I didn't know that.

Alright, I solved the issue, d3dx10_34.dll makes the game break only when its there, bizarre that it says missing files when it runs perfectly without it. If anyone else had this similar issue, check for a dx9 or 10 dll and delete it, then check/validate files via steam to make sure you didnt delete any default files.

You presumably had my dx10 fixer installed.  The manual explains that if you want to move a fsx installation which uses the fixer that  you must uninstall the libraries using the dx10 controller before moving the fsx installation and then reinstall the libraries after the move.  Not following this process will cause fsx to crash as you describe.

The fixer is not working on your laptop, if you want it to work you must install the fixer and then install its libraries.
