Seems to work OK for Rockstar. They bring GTA/RDR games to PC years after the console releases. RDR1 has the record at 14 years and counting. They still make absurd amounts of cash when it happens.

I've been reading a bunch of articles that suggest sales of the Xbox are tanking, which might incentivize MS to offer it on more popular platforms like the PS.

It might seem stupid, but Sony and Microsoft have this exclusivity war. And their users (hardcore users of the consoles) want them to keep some of the exclusives outside of the competitors platforms.

When they started venting the idea MS would release some of the old exclusives for the PS, people got word not allowed.

I mean, I would sell my games on as much platforms as possible, but for some reason they want to promote their platforms (Xbox and PlayStation) through their exclusives.

Rockstar don’t have this issue because they don’t have a platform themselves.

I think you hit the crux of the issue there. It's the same thing that's happening with streaming movies and TV shows. Netflix was doing great. Everyone was doing great licensing their stuff out to Netflix. Then they decided they all wanted their own platform and now everything's fragmented and consumers are becoming annoyed.

Companies play needless exclusivity games at their own peril.

The other reason why they wouldn't have a marketplace on PS5 is because I don't know how Microsoft and Sony could come to an agreement on the revenue split. Microsoft probably wants all the revenue from any marketplace sales on PS5.

Maybe similar like on Steam? Actually not Microsoft gets less there but the devs are getting a smaller percentage when their addon is sold on steam.

Yeah, Microsoft would have to work out some deal with Sony for the marketplace if they ported MSFS to the PS5.  I think on Steam, it's still Microsoft that gives support for the add-ons purchased in the marketplace, because the add-ons are purchased within MSFS.

And then there are the security issues if PS5 is sandboxed like the XBox is. The MSFS team actually got the XBox team to change the code in the XBox OS, so that PMDG and other developers could run complex add-ons. The PMDG DC-6 was yanked from the XBox marketplace because there was some security issue that was undetected when they were testing with the XBox emulator, but showed up on the real XBox.

Would Sony change the code to the PS5 OS just to have MSFS, if the same security issues are present on the PS5? I don't know about that. I can see the MSFS team having leverage with the XBox team because MSFS is ultimately a Microsoft product and they are all under the same umbrella. But Sony modifying the PS5 OS just to get MSFS on it, I am skeptical about that, since MSFS will make some money on PS5, but not that much money because people who wanted MSFS already got it on PC and XBox.  If it's an easy fix to the PS5 OS, I could see Sony doing it. But if it's a more complicated fix that takes more resources and may possibly open up the PS5 OS to other security issues, then I don't know if Sony would go through all that trouble just for MSFS.
