Need help picking out a monitor(s)

Featured Replies

First, a little background.  My current system does not meet minimum requirements for a flight simulator, so I am building a new system specifically for a flight simulator.  Therefore, I have not purchased a simulator, so I have no knowledge of what or how I can position windows within monitors.  I will be using a GeForce RTX 4080 Super card (16GB), which has 3 display port connectiions and one HDMI.

My main focus is to use this setup specifically for flight training with a single engine prop plane, so all flying will be from the cockpit only.  I would like it to be as realistic as possible, so a major thing is to be able to see out of the right & left windows withing having to pan left or right.

Here are possibilities I have come up with, but I don't know which one is best for my scenario, or if there are better choices.

1. One large curved monitor such as Samsung 49-Inch Odyssey G9 (5120 x 1440).

2. 3 curved monitors (like 32"). Left & right monitors would be looking out left & right windows.  (Would 3 curved monitors fit together side by side seamlessly?)

3. Center curved monitor with left & right flat screen monitors.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I will probably be using MSFS 2020 and X Plane.

Thanks.

My view on this topic is based on what I witnessed in three different systems.

On item 1, at a standstill, you will notice some image distortion left/right towards the end of the monitor. After a short while while flying, this issue is not something to look for. The field of view is not correct and distorted.

On item 2, you would be better off with a 3 setup of 49". Not curved.

On item 3, no.

One setup I liked very much and planning to do myself is 3 49" monitors LG 3840x2160 at 138 HZ.

I wish you good luck with your decision.

That would be something to behold but not too sure how the 4080 would handle pumping pixels to three 4K displays and retain any semblance of a smooth sim and a decent frame rate.

MSI Pro Z690-A DDR4 | i5 13600KF | G.Skill Ripjaws V 32GB 3600MHz | RTX 3080 (12GB) | Samsung 980 M.2 NVMe 500GB | Samsung 980 M.2 NVMe 1TB | Samsung 850EVO 500GB | Crucial P3+ 2TB NVMe | 2TB Seagate HDD | Deepcool AK500 CPU Cooler | Thrustmaster T16000M HOTAS | CH Yoke | Various Winctrl hardware | 21:9 1440p UW monitor | Win 11 23H2 build | MSFS2020 / MSFS2024|

My 4090 manages a to drive my 3 x 50" 4ks (alongside another smaller 24") to around 25-30 FPS on the ground at most modest size airports in the PMDG birds or the Fenix.

spacer.pngI'm currently looking at replacing these TV's which are Hisense A7HAU's with the LG OLED C4s.

One of the things I'm looking at is motion smoothing. With frame generation not working across multiple monitors, having reasonable motion smoothing and judder reduction can assist with creating a smother image even if the sim is only pumping out 25-30 FPS.

Does anybody have any experience with OLED TV's for flight sim (or lower FPS games in general)? I see a lot of talk online about how good they are food fast moving games (largely first person shooters) or games that can run at 80+ FPS, but I don't see any feedback on how they handle lower FPS like I'm looking at with 30 FPS in MSFS.

Any advice would be great! 🙂

KL, I really like your setup and the way the views fit between the monitors.  What kind/model are those monitors?

LRBS, You suggest NOT curved monitors?  Any particular reason?  All 49" monitors I have found so far are all curved.

From what I witnessed, curved monitors with a standstill picture will show very little field of view distortion. Unfortunately, I noticed quite a distorted image at high speeds on those monitors in flight simulators. There are no image issues on the system shown here by KL Oo and on the system I mentioned.
You can try LG 48GQ90B-B Ultra HD OLED Ultragear Gaming Monitor on Amazon.
I would go for at least 120 HZ refresh rate.

It seems like there might be an issue with your setup. With DX12 and FG, you should be getting at least 60 FPS frames per second at JFK with PMDG x FENIX set to ultra. Let me talk to my friend to find out about his settings and I'll get back to you. Your system is very good; in the meantime, you can try this.

Hi Mate,

Have you seen any instances of frame generation being displayed /effective over all three monitors when using MSFS multi monitor setup? If you have I'm keen to hear how because there's dozens of threads and requests over at the official forums for this to be implemented.

I can get frame generation on the main (one) screen, but MSFS doesn't allow it to operate on multiple views using its internal multi monitor setup.

In relation to the video, yeah I'm using process lassoo to run MSFS on my x3d cores. Works very well.

That is interesting. From what I understand from my friend, if the monitors don't match, FG might be a problem, so it is necessary to adjust and match to the exact resolution and refresh rate. He has 3 LG 48GQ90B-B Ultra HD OLED monitors. FG is working across all of them. I'm still waiting for an answer, and as soon as I get it, I will share the info.

He may be using Nvidia Surround as that essentially creates one large monitor.

In my case, all monitors are identical, as are cables and obviously resolution etc etc

As I say, there's a LOT of us with triple monitor setups that would love to be able to get FG working on all three displays, but it doesn't appear possible due to the way MSFS renders video.

Sorry, this is what he has:

Alex, I am currently in Melbourne and will return in 7 days. After my arrival, I will re-check this information on my PC.
  1. Set Up Nvidia Surround:
    • Connect your three monitors to the RTX 4090.
    • Right-click on your desktop and select "Nvidia Control Panel."
    • Go to "Set up multiple displays" and enable all three monitors.
    • Navigate to "Configure Surround, PhysX" and enable "Span displays with Surround."
  2. Configure Frame Generation:
    • Open MSFS 2020.
    • Go to the settings menu and navigate to the "General" section, then "Graphics."
    • Ensure that "DLSS" is enabled. This allows the game to utilize Nvidia’s technology to improve performance.
    • If available, enable "Frame Generation" in the settings. This option is typically found under DLSS settings for RTX 4090 series cards.

Yeah, I figured he was using NVIDIA Surround. It's horrible and gives terrible stretching on the side screens.  Not acceptable to me, hence why Microsoft introduced multi monitor support. Just a shame FG doesn't work with it.

A week ago i picked up a 49" MSI Oled. I am blown away with the increase in the immersive experience. Previous monitor was a 34" Dell Ultrasharp 3415 I've had for the better part of 10 years.
