Is it advisable now to just go with one 2T M.2 vs having two drives, one for MSFS and one for everything else. I somehow doubt I would actually use up a 2T drive.

I have 2T drive for MSFS and it has 600GB free now. Addons consuming much space. Two drives are better for safety, but for MSFS 2T drive is better for future use.

A Gen4 NVMe would make a noticeable difference. A bit more expensive but worth it.
2TB is probably the sweet spot right now.

OK thanks, shows how far out of the technology I am.  Still rocking a 1080Ti but my 7 year old system is showing its age and its time to upgrade.  I think I know what to do on the CPU but the GPU is the question.  Waiting for test results on the 5 series and then we will see.

As to drive capacity, that's always a personal call based on how much add-on space you'll need.  With most SSDs, you need to keep about 10% of the capacity free to avoid slowdowns.

With SSDs there's really no advantage any more to having separate drives for the OS and applications.  That was once desirable with HDDs due to the relatively slow head thrashing that occurs when the heads have to track back and forth between the OS and applications located at different physical locations on the platters.  With SSDs you read and write to any address on the device at pretty much the same speed.  Having separate SSDs now just needlessly partitions the available storage.

I have my downloads folder on SSD drive not my C drive default, this allows me to unpack and install from there, then if I want to save the download I move it to my backup drive. I still have P3D v4 v5 v6 install on my backup drive.
