Mysterious Trim Problems

Featured Replies

Or, at least I think I’m having trim problems.

I appear to have my vertical stabilizer trim correctly mapped to my usual two buttons on my Thrustmaster 1600 and they appear to function correctly (I can see the trim wheel moving up and down).

But if I try flying a pattern in say the default C90 I quickly start finding that I’m needing to change pitch a wee bit up or down, but it just doesn’t have the normal effect - in several planes (the C90 and Cessna 337) I’ve ended up crashing well short of the runway, but in the default 737 Max I have zero problems.

I “DO” know how to actually use trim and fly without crashing etc., having been at this hobby for 27 years and having just manually landed the aforementioned Max as well as the XP12 MD-82 just this AM utilizing the same controller - but I’m certainly not eliminating “doing something else stupid” (perhaps in the settings) as a root cause. 🙂

I'm having trouble understanding your issue.

What happens in between "needing to change a pitch a wee bit up or down" and "crashing well short of the runway"? Are you saying that you can't control the aircraft with the yoke, as in: the controls, when hand-flying, don't steer the aircraft where you want it to go? Or are you describing a trim problem, maybe runaway trim, or trim moving in the opposite direction than you anticipate?

Are you using any autopilot modes?

Hand controls (the yoke etc.) work fine, trim APPEARS to spin up and down fine (and not reversed), but it's like the IMPACT of trim changes are strange suddenly - just tried a simple default 172 circuit and as I approached the runway the plane did strange things pitch wise, perhaps not a trim issue at all?

I'm going back to an empty Community folder and perhaps a full reinstall maybe something is funking up the behavior of every aircraft - whatever this problem is has come on very suddenly.

Joystick itself seems fine as I have the same assignments in XP12 and no strange behavior there.

I'm not sure what your issue is, but you can maybe isolate it by doing "test pilot" stuff. Fly straight and level for 10 minutes without using trim, then fly for 10 minutes using the trim constantly, and see if that reproduces the problem. Or fly approaches in zero-wind scenarios, then compare the same approaches with crosswind and turbulence.

Keep in mind that controllability issues in MSFS are often due to having an unexpected binding, like a key on your keyboard (or a button on one of your controllers) activating the trim without your awareness. You can review all of your bindings to see if there's anything there that you're not expecting.

You've said the trim wheel moves when you're moving the trim, but you haven't mentioned what it does when you're *not* controlling the trim.  Does it move?

Another note: If you're used to flying tubeliners, the little spuds can be surprisingly challenging until you get used to them again. Are you sure you're not getting slow on approach?

OK, problem solved - embarrassing, but perhaps it'll help someone else....

Somehow my ENTIRE elevator control with my joystick got deleted, so the real problem was that I was trying to rely solely on elevator trim for all elevator control in MSFS 2024?!?! (facepalm)

So busy watching the trim wheel I just assumed my control inputs on the yoke itself were being recognized.

Thankfully for the rest of mankind I'm not an actual pilot (though I'm sure I'd notice this in a real aircraft) 🙂

Is auto trim switched on or off in the assistances menu?

I do have to say though that compared with msfs2020 and the real world aircraft, using the buttons on my keyboard or controller to control trim in the C175 do seem a bit odd at times.  Using full flaps, I have to use a lot of nose down trim to maintain an appropriate speed compared to what I am used to and find myself adjusting trim in the cruise a lot more (though the RW 172 is a bit like that).

Nope, auto trim was off (but good idea!)

It was really as simple as me (for some reason) losing all mapping of my joystick to my elevator axis (and me flying around wondering why I suddenly lacked elevator control, instantly blaming it on my trim without realizing I had ZERO elevator control from the yoke.

Not my proudest moment after 3 crashes in sim, but glad I've found the root cause! 🙂

The mini HUD when turned on at least temporarily displays the vertical trim in digital numbers which makes the behavior of trim adjustments clear. I'm not surprised the stabilizer commands were lost. The  new controller UI in 2024 is difficult to fully understand without a user manual. Which we don't have.
