LossLess Scaling drops my normal frame rate by 8-10 fps

Featured Replies

When I run Lossless scaling, 3.1.0.2 it drops my frame rate 8-10 fps and makes the sim limited by CPU in MSFS 2024. I guess it uses a lot of processing power. It still doubles my frame rate but starts from a lower number.

Is this a common problem? I don't remember this always happening. Did I miss a setting in the Nvidia app?

Also, I tried to install dlssg to fsr3, but I guess I did something wrong as the option never showed up. I just downloaded it this week. I have a 3080 card. I even ran the disable NV signature.reg and restarted my computer but the option still didn't show up.

I wanted to compare the results, but never was able to get dlssg working.

I did get dlssg to fsr3 working and the same thing happens. I get a frame rate of ~40 with my normal settings and when I start FG, instead of going to 80, it drops to 60-70. Using frame generation on my system puts a large hit on the cpu. I get more limited by CPU when using FG.

Is there a way to fix this? It seems like FG uses more cpu cycles than I would expect. Panning also takes a bigger hit on fps with FG.

Are you using adaptive mode or 2x mode? Adaptive mode really requires a second GPU as it is more intensive.

Would you mind elaborating on this as I am using 3.10.1 with adaptive on a 4090.  You are saying I should be using fixed x2?

I have also noticed some really degraded performance in MSFS without Lossless.  It used to be fairly close between lossless on and off with lossless just adding that extra fuidity.  Now 2020 is stuttering so bad lossless is the only thing making it usable!

I am mid flight right now so could pop from adaptive to fixed quite easily but I've been getting good results even on 14+ hour flights...

Thank you as always

Actually, I tried both modes but normally use 2x mode. I also tried dlssg to fsr mod with the same result. Using any  FG increases my cpu load and shows "limited by cpu" in the fps counter and lowers nominal fps by ~ 8-10.  The effective rate of increase in fps using FG turns out to be only a little more and not twice the original frame rate. For example, if i get 40 fps just from my settings in the sim and it reduces to 30 FPS after activating any FG, my new effective fps is now 60, 2 x 30, ...not twice the 40 like I expected. it's only 50%  higher than I would get without using FG. I hope i'm explaining this clearly.

I wonder if this is true of 4xxx cards that have FG capability built-in. I don't understand why some would use LossLess scaling with a 4xxx card as I thought those cards already have that functionality.

I realize that obsession with fps is a tired exploration, but i was surprised by these observations. I was wondering if I was doing something incorrectly or had something setup wrong.

Still any increase is better than none so I still use FG.

To beat a dead horse, this doesn't happen in 2020. Oh well, another of lifes mysteries.

I get 43 sitting at KSFO with no FG. If I turn (adaptive) LSFG on, I still get 43 base. and the doubled number show 73. For non adaptive (2X) LSFG I get 44 base and 87 doubled.

LSFG does not reduce my fps at all. Using hardware below. I always fly it with adaptive, not 2X.

I set monitor refresh rate to 90 and limit fps in Riva Tuner to 44 and the "target" number in LSFG I set to 88. That way generated fps can't go over 90 (my refresh rate). I don't want to exceed my monitor refresh rate. Changing the "target" number in adaptive LSFG box can influence the fps.

Adaptive mode uses more of your GPU, I was reading over the Lossless place on Reddit. Lots of folks running a second GPU there to render the output frames. 2X mode still seems like the best mode to use with the least overhead.

I noticed adaptive had a lot of overhead so I used the flow scale to set 60% which is 3,072x864 and I can't see any difference in the resulting 5K image after scaling although there appears to be less artifacting and less overhead...

I have set it at 50% (4k here) and its better.
