Shadows in msfs2020... Question

Featured Replies

Hi folks.

I wonder, i have tried to change the shadow resolution in user.opt to 4096, but in the sim, it still is 2048 (?)

I went back to user.opt, and it says 4096, what am i doing wrong? Why does not the new shadowsettings take place in the sim?

Have i missed something?

Any tips, suggestions?

Best regards

The UI only shows up to 2048.

If you set 4096 in the user.opt ,it is set to 4096 regardless of what the sim says in the UI. If you change the value in the UI it will reset the user.opt and you will have to change it again.

But there is no changes in the sharpness of the shadows... Am i missing something? It says 4096 in user.opt, but i see no difference in the sim if i change it back to 2048... How do i keep the shadows in 4096 in the sim?

I noticed the difference immediately, less shimmering. What are you using as a test? I flew around in a GA aircraft on clear skies. Record at 4096 and 2048 so you can compare results.

But why wont the setting in user.opt that i made, to 4096, show up in the sim? I dont understand that... In the sim it says 2048, but when i check the user.opt, it says 4096... Why?

Strange, when I make the change it shows as 4096 under Shadow Maps in the sim (just verified it still said 4096 from when I made the change a few months ago)  but if you make a change in sim it will revert to 2048 and you will lose the setting.

By any chance do you have the Nvidia app optimizing in the background?

No, no Nvidia app... This is so strange, since i see the changes i made in user.opt, 4096, but in the sim its still 2048...

It's usercfg.opt

hopefully you have edited the correct file.  And as Paul says, it SHOULD show in your sim settings as 4096 even though that's not a user-selectable setting in the GUI.  Even so, it should show there if your usercfg.opt file is set up ok.

Also remember that there are TWO sections in the usercfg.opt, one for VR and one for 2D.  You might have set the VR one only or vice-versa?  If you set the VR one and run 2D it won't take effect.
