JF Avro RJ85 - AP Disconnecting on Approach

Featured Replies

Have had 3 flights today in MFS2024,  into different airports, where the AP disconnects unaided whilst coming in on approach.

Occurred between 1500' & 1700'.

Nothing touched on the controls. Just turns off all of a sudden.

Any one else experiencing this?

Check your autopilot settings I suppose that your approach is in the mode assuming turning autopilot off automatically.

Thank you. Will check that.

If that is the case, where do I set the AP to not turn off automatically?

Just to check have you set up everything according to the procedure (ILS for example) decision hight, did you push APP button, have you chosen correct procedure in the computer etc. It can be that in non-precision approach autopilot turns off automaticaly (I might be wrong - it's just advise for the direction to think.)

Working on Cat3 approaches, & AP should hold for Autoland.

However, looking through the User Manual [200+ pages], the aircraft has layers of complexity & I need to get a better handle on that.

Finally sorted it.

Flew  a Cat 3 ILS into EGSS, Rwy 04, & as I entered the green feathers on LittleNavMap at 1700', I hit VOR LOC, & the AP turned off, as did FD.

So I re-flew that flight & this time I hit the APP button instead of VOR LOC & the Nav2 AP came on, joining NAV1 AP, & then the aircraft followed the Glide slope down for an autoland.

Not sure why VOR LOC upset the apple cart, but APP works ok.

The four planes I fly most often are this same RJ, the FSS 727, the Leonardo Maddog X, and the PMDG 737-600. All have separate VOR and ILS autopilot functions, and you must use the ILS function when flying ILS approaches or they will not work correctly. In fact most not ancient aircraft of any size that have autopilots seem to work this way.

It's worth the time to learn to fly the JF RJ. It's about as perfect a plane as you're going to find for MSFS.

I would love to start flying the RJ in MSFS 2020, but I am suffering from a severe pitch oscillation bug that presumably does not affect everyone. Very annoying.
