If you like helicopters, do yourself a favor and download this free mod for DCS World (which is also free 😉).

Absolutely WONDERFUL flight dynamics - light, responsive, and pretty much as "stick and rudder" as it gets.

Wow …DCS World…

I believe even the freeware a/c from DCS would rival the best payware from our other SIMs…🙂

I’d say it really depends on the addon. 😊🤙

For military combat aircraft? Absolutely - the best are (almost) all in DCS.

But in terms of general fidelity level, there are plenty of addons that are as good in the various other sims. Think of the highest quality addons from MilViz, Flight Factor, Fenix, Leonardo, ToLiss (and many others). those are all easily as good as anything in DCS.

A direct comparo could be something like the BlackBird C-130J and the DCS C-130J. As far as I can tell, they’re at a very similar level of fidelity.

And XP & MSFS have things like Real Time/Real World weather (a big one for me!). DCS is old school like P3D in regards that.

it just comes down to what equipment you’re interested in flying and what manner of operations you want to conduct.

All the sims have great things to offer and I can’t imagine life without ALL of them 😁

Quite true…! Frankly, I didn’t even know there are freeware stuff in DCS…🙂

During my late FSX years, I was considering DCS as a viable alternative for myself.

I’ve been always quite impressed by the high-fidelity nature of the DCS aircraft. I had actually dabbled in it a bit, and got quite proficient flying that MiG-21bis, with the real (authentic) Russian language cockpit…🙂…I recall the cockpit language was configurable. I would often just fly it on civilian missions…just as I would occasionally fly the FSX (VRS) F-18, between  Chicago and South Bend, Indiana…🙂

However, My civilian simmer heart was not fully into flying military aircraft and military missions…🙂

Anyway, kudos to those who fly the DCS SIM military a/c, and fly it properly the way they should be flown…

I have that VRS Super Hornet, too! Fantastic addon and - by far - The Best Super Hornet available on any sim!

unfortunately, the devs have a beef with MSFS anti-piracy, so they say they wont be coming to the modern sim 😖

there’s a really great freeware A-4E available for DCS, and it does all kinds of cool non-combat stuff. You should give it a try!

and the nice thing about DCS is the perpetual license, so that MiG-21 is still entirely airworthy. It’s always fun to do IMC IFR flights Soviet style!

Correct, it's not aiming on scenery and environment but on combat missions and today they have improved some scenery for that a lot.

But as far as I know there is no scenery for worldwide aviation in the base install. Can be there is a dlc at Steam for that meanwhile, don't know.

But generally it's about professional combat missions and not about aviation. I think there is also a first payware scenery available at Orbx

to enlarge that area where to fly. They are doing well at DCS.

PC: Ryzen 7 3700x AM4, 16 GB RAM, RTX 3060 12GB, Storage SSD 3TB, HDD 8TB, USB 8TB, 2 Screens, Win10-64

SIMs: FSX SE, P3d 3.4/4.5/6.1, Xplane 10/11/12, MSFS 2020/24, Aerofly FS 4

Yep - very much so 🙂👍

no global scenery, tho that is in the pipeline - but far future.

but even then, I bet it’s still going to be a series of enhanced Hi Fi regions (similar to now) fitted to a fairly low detail globe.

Orbx did indeed publish the Kola Peninsula map. It’s good, but not as detailed as TrueEarth (and also much bigger than any True Earth).

the scenery has made great strides in recent years - some of it now being as good as in MSFS.

But I don’t know how “professional” most of us are in DCS 😉

It seems like we have a very similar spectrum of simmers to XP/MSFS. There are guys who just want to jump in and blaze away like War Thunder, and at the other end those who are members of formalized squadrons with structure, training and all that (like VA’s I guess).

so, yeah, much different than the civ sims. But still a heckuva lot of fun even if you’re just practicing navigation 😎

Thank you again P_7878, 🙂 of course the very demanding fighter environment is difficult to handle for simmers.

But I can confirm that usually we simmers are not influenced at all by the current poilitical situation.

So for those of us who really want to learn something about flying fighters DCS is a good place...

PC: Ryzen 7 3700x AM4, 16 GB RAM, RTX 3060 12GB, Storage SSD 3TB, HDD 8TB, USB 8TB, 2 Screens, Win10-64

SIMs: FSX SE, P3d 3.4/4.5/6.1, Xplane 10/11/12, MSFS 2020/24, Aerofly FS 4

Hi Andreas:

Were you the OP for these DCS Heli shots…or maybe it’s UrgentSiesta…🙂…?

Yes, no question about it. The DCS community is intently focused on air combat simulation, and has plenty of SME’s and good info on the subject.

DCS addons are also rather mercilessly evaluated on edge of envelope handling, so I’d posit that their flying characteristics are (generally) at least a few steps above what’s available in the civ sims.

That said, the sim itself really doesn’t provide training in tactics, but rather in the specific operations of systems.

I.e., if one wanted to learn to dogfight, you’d have to learn from the community or the vast amount of open source literature available rather than the sim itself.
