My All-Default XP12 Install

Featured Replies

For about a week, I’ve been flying only a second, all-default, copy of the XP12 beta.

The default 737, the Cessna, the Cirrus, even the A330.

Just so I can see how much fun I can have with zero complexity added in via any sort of freeware or payware add ons.

The answer is, surprisingly, “a great deal of fun” - and I’ve challenged myself to go a month in the all-default mode.

I’m also doing this with my other flight simulator and even my train simulation - sort of a minimalist experiment as an antidote to what I always do to all my sims and frankly everything in life - “Oooh! CPU heavy airliner! Let’s add some ship traffic too!?”

Then I get miffy when I’m flying and get a stutter or two.

Will I get bored and want to install my 757 and the new 737-200 etc? Probably, but the clean and simple slate feels good for a bit, therapeutic even, as an experiment, and is actually very easy to do. Perhaps memories of my friend @jcomm ‘s past days as “the uninstaller” inspired me, who knows?

Jcomm - uninstalling stuff - unheard of even going to Linux did not dissuade him from adding more!!

A pure default installation does wonders for ones sanity

I’ve been having a parallel/similar experience with my very first time running XP on Linux. Long story short, “basic” aircraft in a mostly vanilla XP install are surprisingly satisfying!

The absolute shocker for me, tho, is seeing that the ToLiss A346 runs absolutely as fast and smooth as the Cirrus Jet, even on my 8 year old potato PC 😁👍

Makes me somewhat regret that I’ve been such a Boeing diehard all these years 😮

The good news, as you note, is that PLENTY of satisfaction can be derived from a minimalist XP install.

I have yet to do a serious flight with the Citation X - methinks it’s about time to rectify that oversight 😎

Going Linux stalled because of Aces of Thunder which wouldn't run there :-(,, but it's a future project.

Condorsoaring 3 runs perfectly.

MSFS I would have to buy it again through Steam - I have more where to spend my sim budget ...

Regarding the OP, I've got a clean Xp12, not even SimHeaven now that I am waiting for the release of the new commercial version.

I did try and really liked Auto-Ortho, Auto-Ortho + SimHeaven, in the past even Orth4XP, but honestly default is good enough for me because most of the default airports are good enough, and I really place 85% of my satisfaction with a flight simulator in aerodynamics and weather modeling.

Abut to get to 62, I've calmed down regarding uninstalling 😂 but I'm not cured 100% ...

Glad to hear I’m not totally crazy, guys!

Although your posts already have me thinking - what is this Aces of Thunder about?

And interesting to know the A346 runs so smoothly vs default - last week was outside in our front yard (Wisconsin) when a huge but graceful Lufthansa A346 D-AIHZ (one of only 4 left in service?) did a holding pattern above us at about 20K feet inbound to O’Hare from Frankfurt. Even zooming with my phone she looked graceful and LONG. My sighting and your potato have me thinking @UrgentSiesta …. I have a 5 year old potato. 🥔 😂

@jcomm I’m almost 51 so perhaps I still have a ways to go before I lose the intense satisfaction of deleting and uninstalling!

We’ll see how long this all-default philosophy lasts, if I can make it 30 days.

Aces of Thunder is an WW2 / WW1 "arcade" made by Gaijin, the same who do War Thunder :-)

I felt for War Thunder some 5 years ago, and then recently this game was released in Steam, I purchased it and play some furball battles in it specially now with my superb head tracker, also purchased from Steam but available standalone - Beam Eye tracker.

Although arcadish the flight dynamics are acceptable, as well as engine and systems modeling.
