November 21, 200223 yr Hi,I've problems with AdvDisplay on my system (AMD Athlon XP 1800+ with GeForce3 Ti-200). It always get's invisible when I click on the panel. I need to use the menu entry to show the window again: loosing the window size and docking state. Is there anything I can do against it and can I control RCV3 without AdvDisplay?ThanksThomas
November 21, 200223 yr Hi Thomas,You really do need advdisplay to run RC3. Trying to use the MS scroll bar would be a nightmare.I'm sure there is a way to get advdisplay to stay on top but someone else may have to help you there. I usually run it undocked on a second monitor and have never had this problem. All the best,Johnhttp://www.jdtllc.com/images/RCbeta.jpg
November 21, 200223 yr Also, make sure you are using the latest version, V 1.97. Pete made some real nice changes to it to where on my system it never goes away.Larryhttp://www.jdtllc.com/images/RCbeta.jpg
November 21, 200223 yr Author I've got the latest version of FSUIPC and AdvDisplay. Everything is working as it should, but it's not staying visible as it should. I've already tried several panels/aircraft, but I always got the same result: the window just disappears after clicking on the panel.Thomas
November 21, 200223 yr Thomas,I've found three things will make this window either blink, or disappear altogether. This is what's worked for me, hope it works for you. If it does, please be here when others have the same problem. We appreciate any/all support help we get :-zhelp!1). Keep the AdvDisplay window at "such-and-such" distance (I think it's 1/4"+, or 1/2"+) from any edge of your panel. It's not so far that it's offensive Thomas, but putting the window on the very edge, left/right-top/bottom (for me) has never worked.2). This one's inconsistent. Depending on the aircraft, it's panel etc..., if I put the window above the aircraft panel (not on top of, I mean above as in over sky), it'll disappear. Again, that's inconsistent.3). If I put the window on an area of the aircraft panel that "moves", the window will blink. The attitude/airspeed indicators, altitude/VAS instruments, even (like on the B737) the N1/EGT/N2 instruments... they all move. The window needs be on a "fixed" area.Placement means the world. I loaded every aircraft I had available one afternoon, took the time to find correct placement for each, and saved each situation so I wouldn't have to go through that every flight. It'll seem like an amazing pain at first, but it's really not that bad. As I remember, it was kind of relaxing :-lol Now, my hope for you is someone out there will make a total fool out of me and offer a more simple solution. If there is one, I'm not aware of it. This will be an issue after release. It's important we provide support as quickly as possible, to everyone. Wish I'd thought of this earlier, as it'd be a great FAQ item (we'll add it I'm sure).
November 21, 200223 yr Also, as antoher thing to do: When AdvDisp disappears (and it almost never does now with v1.97) I just look left or right. When it snaps back front AdvDisp is there. What has Peter had to say about it?
November 21, 200223 yr Author Hi,Thanks for your help. I'll try that later at home and let you know which method works for me. :) I hope at least one will work...RegardsThomas
November 21, 200223 yr Hi Thomas,One other thing you could try if you have advdisplay docked to a panel.Right click on it and make sure that the 'hide when empty' option isn't checked.Having this option checked is the only way I can get it to do what you describe. All the best,Johnhttp://www.jdtllc.com/images/RCbeta.jpg
November 21, 200223 yr Author I know that. I tried the suggested methods right now and the good thing is that it is getting better now. ;) I set the position so that there is much space between the screen border and the window. But it is still sometimes hiding itself. Even moving the view to left or right does not always help. Sometimes this works and sometimes it is just flickering for a second, but not showing up. I've tried it now on several systems with different hardware, but on most systems it is getting invisible after a time. So my questions is, if it would be possible to code a gauge that displays the text? Just a suggestion, because using the AdvDisplay only could be annoying for some users, where AdvDisplay does not work 100 percent.RegardsThomas
November 21, 200223 yr Thomas,Let me see if I can clarify my suggestion. When I say looking left or right, I have the keys set so I look left or right pressing the Shift-Left or Shift-right arrows. That does an immediate look to left or right, not pan left or right. You may also wish to try "w" "w" "w" to hide the panel and redisplay it. We had a long discussion in the beta team with Peter about this issue and he worked on it a long time. Since the update I've not had AdvDisp disappear completely.Let us know if you've come up with anything that solves it better for you. If nothing else, you can move AdvDisp to another monitor, or try ShowText (also by Peter Dowson and should be in the AdvDisp zip), and see if that works better. It's for cross-networked systems, but should work okay on one. You'll need another monitor for it though.
November 21, 200223 yr Thomas,I have adv running on three machines and it does exactly what you're seeing on them all. I tried everything during RC testing to find a way around it but nada. Best (& quickest) as Scott says, is to momentarily switch views. I tend to cycle views frequently so I only find it a minor niggle. - Dean P3Dv4 & XP11 space
November 22, 200223 yr Author I personally think it's an annoying thing. I've got it working for 80%, but I don't like this way. There is no easy way to hide/show this window. Most of the time you need to resize and reposition it. As I already said in an earlier post, why not make a gauge that just display this menu. Shouldn't be that hard to code or? Maybe Peter can improve the functionaltiy of AdvDisplay?CheersThomas
November 22, 200223 yr I have the same problem, W98, 2000 & XP, does it on all and "Sods Law" dictates it happens at the most inconvinient moments!! I am supprised that RC is wholly dependant on this, currently, flawed utility?!>>There is no easy way to hide/show this window.Thomas, from the FS task bar click "modules" then AdvDisp, return to the main screen then repeat the above, and up she pops!
November 22, 200223 yr Author >>>>There is no easy way to hide/show this window.>>Thomas, from the FS task bar click "modules" then AdvDisp, return to the main screen then repeat the above, and up she pops! I know that. ;) But I'm looking for an easier way. A shortcut would be nice.Thomas
November 22, 200223 yr Commercial Member if it is "flawed", none of us (the beta testers) are seeing the problem.a number of possible corrections were mentioned up in this thread. have you followed them? when i see this happen, is because i moved the display too close to the edge of the screen, or the display isn't "docked" enough on a panel. a couple of millimeters to the left or right, up or down. i'm sure some of the beta testers will jump in here. if we can duplicate the problems you are having, we'll get peter to fix it.
