  1. The original topic is interesting since it draws from Waterfield's letter. Not to hijack this thread, but I also find it interesting that Waterfield never mentions (perhaps never considered) that PSS went down because others, like myself, decided we wouldn't purchase or use a PSS product after experiencing a less than statisfactory encounter with PSS. Piracy has no bearing on the lost income from boycotters and this same group had no impact on customer service, but I'm sure it impacted the bottom line. When PSS first launched, they were the best at what they offered. I was a big supporter initially. Then the forum went to moderated status, loyal customers were sometimes treated rudely, PSS products didn't compare to competing products at comparable price points and I didn't see the point in giving PSS any more of my money. I haven't used a PSS product on my computer since 2004.Although piracy is a big problem in the FS industry, and it affects more people than just the developers, I find it odd that no one has mentioned how boycotting PSS affected the company. I know I'm not the only one to turn away from PSS over the years.Bruce
  2. Ground scenery may not be a problem, but what about air scenery? Do you have add on AI traffic? It's possible one aircraft with a bad texture file flew within range at that moment and triggered the CTD.The best way to test for this is to record the day and time of the CTD, then save a start up file just moments before that time. If you can reproduce the CTD at the same day, time, and location without moving your aircraft, it may be an AI aircraft causing the CTD.Finding the aircraft that creates the CTD is a major task in itself. You'll need to eliminate the traffic bgl file(s) until you isolate the file, then try to isolate the aircraft. Reinstalling the texture usually fixes the problem. Also consider that a ground scenery CTD does not have to do with your current location, but any scenery that is read into memory. So it's possible that it's a ground scenery add on somewhere in the visible vicinity of your aircraft, even in the far visible distance.Bruce
  3. There's one additional item to consider....You are using replacement textures on the FS default aircraft. It's the FS default traffic.bgl that is making Air France fly on the routes you do not want. If you do not rename or remove the default traffic.bgl, you will still have those default aircraft flying the same routes, even if you add AI packages from WOAI, EvolveAI, etc. Be aware that removing the default traffic file will remove all traffic until you supplement with other AI traffic files. So you'll need to decide which is more unacceptable; no traffic other than what you have added, or traffic everywhere but not accurate. You'll find the default traffic.bgl file in your FS sceneryworldscenery folder.Bruce
  4. >> ESP is a distinct, brand-neutral platform for commercial solution providers to leverage. Is it accurate to say that MS TrainSim is an ESP proof of concept developed internally at Microsoft?Everything we are hearing about TrainSim says it's based on the same environment, scenery, etc., along with some enhancements. Which leads to a follow up question; how does MS adopt/implement the enhancements developers create with ESP that would make ESP a better platform? Many FS developers have to create proprietary code to implement concepts, yet it seems that such enhancements would be best served with incorporation into ESP, not left on a developer's hard drive.Bruce
  5. >> NDBs do not provide DME (distance measuring equipment) information.DME can be colocated with an NDB. For example, in Spain, San Sabastian (HIG) is an NDB-DME (http://www.worldaerodata.com/wad.cgi?nav=SAN+SEBASTIAN&nav_id=HIG&nav_type=7).Although rare, they do exist. However, when discussing Flight Sim, it's fair to say NDBs do not provide DME.

  7. As a follow up to my posting, I went to the forum and I see you have chatted with Ernie. In the FAQ section of the forum is a posting on how to add your own aircraft. It's at http://www.fsbuild.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=188Hope this helps.
  8. I suggested going to the FSBuild site because it's packed with useful information about FSBuild. For example, there is a section for aircraft profiles (http://www.fsbuild.com/aircraft_performance.html) and there are some threads in the forum on how to make your own aircraft definition files. Perhaps someone has already created the same aircraft you are looking for.Ernie regularly answers questions on the forum, so if you run into any problems, you have the developer there to help you out.Again, the most effective way to help you is to suggest the FSBuild site (www.fsbuild.com).
  9. Try the FSBuild forum for answers about FSBuild.http://www.fsbuild.com/forum/
  10. >And why would I want to do that?>Hmmm... because it's a forum rule and people are trying to help you out before your post gets removed.Bruce
  11. Dave,Those new voice samples are a really good sampling of what's in the product. I think it gives people a better understanding of the variety of accents and sound quality.Bruce
  12. For the benefit of those interested in accented voices, you select one of the voices as the pilot/copilot and the controllers will use all others depending on your geographic location. The quality of the voice varies due to voices being recorded on different systems with different microphones. It's not like everyone went to the MS studios and recorded their voices.I know I have become very accustomed to the voices in RC and/or FS. So when an accented voice plays, you will need to listen closely until your ear adjusts to the accent. This is no different than real life.So basically, this product may not be for everyone, but if you have asked for accented ATC, this is the only program available that gives it to you.PF2000 gave one the option to record their own voice. Dave will have to respond whether this is available in PFE since I don't recall any testers creating new voice sets.Bruce
  13. There will be many questions regarding this release. A good place to start is the AVSIM review on PF2000 at http://www.avsim.com/pages/0900/pf2k/pf2k.htmlNext, I'd suggest reading Dave's new web page on PDE at http://www.oncourse-software.co.uk/pfe.htmI'm sure there will be more questions beyond the information provided, but those two links should cover most of the FAQs.Bruce
  14. Wow! I'm getting Dillon/Water Mango deja vu from reading that last post. Same run on sentences, no caps (except when shouting), multiple periods, and the same misspelled words. Need I even mention the FSX bashing and predictions of doom before the patch is released?Anyone else picking up the vibe that a certain dual posting personality is back, under a different name with 4 posts?
  15. Peter,I had a similar problem when flying in many locations in Europe. I spent an entire weekend reading support forums and finally found a solution. It seems you have the scenery priority correctly set, so the problem comes from installing Mallorca after you installed the software that portrays the accurate coastlines. You only mention UT/USA, but if those photos are Mallorca, then you must also have UT/Europe.Go to the UT support forum and download the patches for the Aerosoft, SimWings, etc. products. http://www.simforums.com/forums/forum_posts.asp?TID=16113This should fix the problem. If it does not, then run the UT setup program, disabling all UT settings, which makes UT copy the original textures back to the scenery folder. Then enable the UT settings again, and UT will copy its custom BGLs into the scenery folder. Check your coastlines to see if the problem goes away.If not, then you'll have to copy your original textures back, as listed in the previous section and uninstall UT Europe. Then install UT again, which guarantees the original UT BGLs are copied into your scenery folder. Don't forget to apply the patches after the reinstall. There are some scenery programs that change the original scenery BGLs during installation, and when you have UT installed, they change the UT scenery instead. So generally a reset will work, and in some cases, a reinstall will work. In my case, once I did the reinstall, then applied all of the patches, my coastline problems were gone.It was frustrating, and I was very relieved once I had proper coastlines again. The lesson learned was to be careful when installing new scenery and always check the area for coastline problems (that includes lakes).Bruce
  16. >>However, I've not seen any product with the ability to have changing accents and voices based on the location of the user aircraft.Reggie,I presume you mean in either FS9 or FSX. In FS98 and FS2000, ProFlight was able to regionalize accents by world ATC sector and airline.Bruce
  17. I agree! The package really ramps up the Montana scenery.I don't understand why Kalispell was left out when it's a major airport for NW Montana. I couldn't find any comparable scenery for Kalispell in the library.I hope Lauren takes the time to work up Kalispell and round out a fantastic set of Montana airports.Bruce
  18. Wouldn't it be easier to design a merge file to use the POSKY fuselage rather than design a detailed virtual cockpit?Merges have been set up for other payware aircraft where the user felt another external model was superior to the model offered originally. To the original poster: perhaps you can rephrase your question to ask for help in how a merge file is put together.Bruce
  19. Now Charlie,You just violated Rule #1, your contribution (?) contained an opinion, and you didn't back it up with a fact. :-lol
  20. If you think FlyTampa KSEA is WOW! then check out Flight Scenery KPDX. http://www.flightscenery.com/flightzone02/screenshots.htmIt's the best scenery out there right now.
  21. Funny how things change, yet so much remains the same.Anyone recall how we struggled with bad frame rates in FS9, only to find that renaming Default.xml was the key to higher frame rates?Later Microsoft released the 9.1 patch and we all put Default.xml back to increase the density of our autogen. So here we are 3 years later and renaming Default.xml once again.Anyone else having deja vu?Bruce
  22. Just a clarification on Bill's post. You don't have to purchase FSPaint to use the model preview feature. Simply download the demo version and you will get the functionality you are looking for.If you wish to paint aircraft and then save your work, you will need to purchase the FSPaint program.
  23. What's up with that beacon relection on the engine of the R22? Seems the flash on the engine is a half second after the beacon flash on the tailboom. Is that an artifact of recording the video or is that how it's shown realtime in the sim?
  24. Archtx,Adam from Aces said at the AVSIM conference that they reworked the code so any extra CPU cycles (based on a locked FPS setting, not unlimited) would be given to the texture rendering engine and therefore, people would see a slight decrease in FPS for identical slider settings. This change was made following the release of demo1 and the public beta.So you and the others here mentioning a decrease in FPS are just seeing the effects of CPU cycles that used to go to FPS now going to texture rendering. This also explains why people are saying the blurries are much better with demo2 compared to demo1.Bruce
  25. Adam,Thanks for the posting. For everyone reading, this is just a portion of the presentation Adam gave at the AVSIM conference, and for those that were unable to attend, lots of other useful information on scenery, terrain, and textures was presented by Adam.I suggest that for the next conference, AVSIM & Microsoft explore the possiblity of developing a podcast or other means for recording the presentations and presenting them on the internet for the benefit of developers and users that are not able to attend events (within legal limitations, copyrights, etc.).Bruce
