  1. Mike,It should be noted that only some users have experienced a "consistent CTD"...I've flown the plane for more than 100 hours and haven't had any. Word on the Aeroworx forum is that the fix list for the 2.0 update is being finalized...all the issues discussed there are being fixed, and soon.Yoda
  2. Peter,After all the amazing advice and interesting information you've posted over the years, you've finally (in my opinion) missed something here. Flight simming is about fiction, and fiction is the suspension of disbelief. Terror is a reaction to a perceived threat...and the key word there is "perceived" and not "threat." When you actively seek realism, when you actually FLY the sim aircraft, and you have a specific and goal in mind (a goal that comes with consequences if it's not achieved), you can fairly effectively achieve the level of concern that might accompany a serious problem in real life flight.A loss of visibility is one such situation...and I remember seeing some photos you posted of icing on your cockpit windows (though I don't remember you admitting terror in that situation...I doubt you WERE terrified, since you thought to take pictures) and I am sure that you were concerned about safely solving the problem. THAT, we can simulate.Last summer, while flying for Bush Flying Unlimited, I accepted a medevac job that involved going into a small, uncontrolled airport with no published IFR procedures. I fly with real weather turned on, and sure enough, when I got there, visibility was down to nil. I was down to almost no fuel (I'd "set myself up" as taking the call while on a longish flight to somewhere else), was in a complex and expensive aircraft (a King Air), and had no visibility, no hope of going anywhere else, and an (albeit imaginary) person on the ground who was relying on me to get in and get him to a hospital elsewhere. I imagine that real world medevac pilots face this type of situation often...and all of these factors combined in my imagination to make it real enough for me...I was able to suspend my disbelief enough that when I got down (safely...actually a nice landing), I had the shakes and discovered that there was a rivulet of sweat running down my back. No, there was no REAL threat...I could have said "enough" and set the weather to clear or even turned off the computer...but I chose to immerse myself in it. The threat to my life did not exist, but the threat to my simming experience was, and therefore, so was the adrenaline.Respectfully, and with Admiration,Kurt
  3. I flew the Spit for the first time tonight (though I've flown extensively in the Spit Mk I presented by Aeroplane Heaven) and I must say that the trick with the lower side windscreen works well to keep you on the runway centerline...the rest must come with practice. There's a word for my first landing in the RA Spit: "Boom-sa-daisy!"I'll get better.Yoda
  4. The interaction with AI. Got a visit from the FSDO after an Egypt Air heavy landed on my runway behind me.Went something like this:RC HECA TWR: King Air 18AF, runway 5L, winds calm, cleared to land.18AF: Roger, cleared to land, 5LMSFS ATC: EGYPT AIR XXX Heavy, cleared to land, RWY 5L.EA XXX: Roger, cleared to land. Now, I know that AI aircraft frequently ignore other aircraft in the pattern, and with the Aeroworx King Air that can cause a rapid, spontaneous down trim and resulting "lawn dart maneuver" so I was cautious. The heavy looked quite a ways back, so I figured that once I touched down, he'd get a go around. When I touched down, I heard this:RC HECA TWR: King Air 8AF, go around, traffic on the runway. At this point, I figure that I am screwed no matter what I do...I'm down, and apparently, there is a much faster aircraft right behind me...even if I pour on the power and try to take off again, that heavy will run me down.In retrospect, I should have poured the coals to it and declared a missed approach as soon as I heard the heavy get landing clearance.FWIW, I had a similar situation once at a Naval Air Station, when I was in a C152 ahead of an inbound F-14. Tower called, "left 360 for separation behind a Cessna on short final", to which the Navy pilot gave an exasperated "Roger, left 360." Come to think of it, I was the one getting the 360 at Long Beach, once.Looking forward to an ATC program that actually works the separation issue.Kurt
  5. It's been more than a year since I flew with RC (for various reasons, mostly that I wasn't flying AT ALL), and I'd forgotten how sarcastic the debrief can be. During my flight from KSAN to KSDL today, I got clearance to descend at pilot's discretion, then miscalculated the descent point. Oops. To make matters worse, I missed a couple calls that were stepped on by the default ATC chatter. The RC3.1 debriefer's comment began, "You need to clean the wax out of your ears..."It sure made me pay attention on the next leg of my flight...which ended in Tulsa with a beautiful ILS approach to 18L and an okay landing. The debriefer said, "You're obviously a rated pilot...or you should be."Not a bad way to end the day.Kurt "Yoda" Kalbfleisch
  6. First, thanks for this great software!I like the various chatter, but it's a little unrealistic to have a controller all to myself (synthetic voice is unique). Is there a way to have purely sythetic chatter? Seems like setting the chatter slider down to 0 makes it way too quiet.Regards,Kurt
  7. Jure,Thanks so much for the quick and helpful response. I have a GeForce FX 5700, and I have been thinking that this may be the reason, but if you're running a Radeon card and get the same thing, that's probably not it. I have tried changing resolution when it happens, but with no luck.I hadn't thought to ALT-Tab between the various apps, so I'll give that a try tomorrow...it's 2320 now, so I'm off to hit the rack.Regards,Kurt
  8. Okay...I've been fighting with this for 2 hours. I am posting here because this doesn't seem to be specific to any addon. When I try to go back to full screen after windowing FS9 to start either Squawkbox or Radar Contact 3.1, I get a black screen and a flickering hourglass. A check of the task manager shows that FS9 is still running. I have now seen this consistently for more than 2 hours...first time it's happened was in the last day or so, but I was able to restart the whole thing and get it to work on the second try before. It happens with add on planes and default. It happens with and without AS2004.5. It happens whether or not I have docked the ADV display. It does not happen when I am not attempting to run either SB or RC3.1.Has anybody else seen this? Am I doomed to a total reload?Kurt
  9. Great point.I just watched "Fate is the Hunter" on cable last week...based on the Earnest K. Gann novel about a post-crash investigation. There really are a lot of little things that contribute to a catastrophe, any one of which can affect the outcome. Kurt

    757

Chad,A coupla things: First, a 767 is NOT "a 757 with a few minor adjustments", it's a whole 'nother aircraft...a heavy. It has common systems and a common cockpit layout, but definitely more than minor differences. The 767PIC for FS2k2 did work when merged with a 757 flight model, but there were significant issues thad had to be overlooked, mostly with the FMC. Anything having to do with weight (and all the calculations derived from weight) had to be either ignored or, if you're as crazy as I am, kluged so that it would be approximately correct.Second, the last time I was in the 767PIC forum, they were extremely unfriendly to anyone who dared to post about using the 767PIC panel in a 757.I can understand why PMDG might not want to do a 757 for MSFS (they've done two already, for Fly! and Fly!II, and it might be a little boring for them).Still, it's a great idea. We need a good 75!Kurt
  11. Judging purely by the number of "approving" real-world B200 pilots in the Aeroworx forum...I believe the "feel" of the plane is every bit as good as a Realair plane. When I got mine, I flew it from the Beech factory to KMYF in San Diego...about a 4 1/2 hour flight. I used RW planning tools and RW "numbers" to plan the flight...then flew with real weather selected. The result was "by the book" performance. Did it feel right? I log my FS time and have nearly 800 hours, mostly in addons that are widely acknowledged to be spot on...and the B200 felt right to me, but again, my judgement is based on 35 hours in C152s and Piper Warriors, and 800 hours in the sim...As with all the aircraft available for FS9 (freeware or payware) the important thing is "suspension of disbelief." Aeroworx has done a great job here.Kurt
  12. John,The Aeroworx B200 sets a new standard...in the Aeroworx forum a few weeks ago, one of the developers responded to a user question with a digital photo of a gauge taken from the real plane...the panel in the sim is so close, the photo might as well have been taken from a screen shot. I enjoy learning the systems of a complex aircraft, and the B200 does as good a job of emulating the systems as any sim plane ever produced. This is the aircraft I wish the PMDG B1900D had been, and had PMDG chosen to put as much effort into the panel as they did for their 737, I'm sure the B1900 would have been in the range of $30, too. Yoda
  13. Yes.Head over to www.flightfactory-simulations.com and check out their Van's RV-7. I don't have it, but the reviews all talk about how you need to "wash" the plane periodically to get rid of the virtual "gunk" that accumulates. Apparently, they've worked out a way to change the textures as you accumulate flight time.Yoda
  14. A year or two ago, I was on an American Eagle Saab 340 from KLAX. The overcast extended East quite a ways. Our first approach was to the LOC 27, and we got to DH without seeing the ground, so the captain poured on the power and we hiked back out of the soup.On our second approach, the LOC 27 again, the captain explained that visibility was spotty and that the plane behind us on the first pass had gotten down okay. Once again, we got down to DH before aborting the approach...we could see the field lights below us as we went over. This time, though, ATC vectored us out to hold for 30 minutes while they switched the direction of the traffic. It doesn't take that long, I would imagine, but the captain announced that we were number one for entry to the ILS 9 approach, then headed us back to the hold while another airplane got the go ahead after declaring a low fuel state. Finally, we got the go ahead, and the rest of the flight was uneventful...a nice landing "the wrong way" into KSAN.Yoda
  15. As the voice of dissent here, I have to say that after flying the Aeroworx B200, I purchased the 421 and was disappointed. My computer is a 1.6 Gig P4 with a GeForce 2Ti video board...all due to be upgraded this summer...which is significantly lower than the minimum recommended by Aeroworx. Their bird flies just fine, except for the wait time when I call up a subpanel...but the bird is WORTH IT.The F1 421C is, by contrast, not as nice a 2D panel, and offers me lower frame rates and more stuttering. Worse, the DXT3 textures are nowhere near as clear as those on the B200...I can't speak for the 441, and I am otherwise a loyal F1 customer, but I've climbed into the Beech's cockpit and that's where I plan to stay.Yoda
  16. Hey, I've been trying all weekend to buy the Beech F33A and FS2004 upgrade at the Carenado website, and I keep getting a message that says my order can't be processed (something about the client not existing in the database). I registered at their website, and have received the confirmation e-mail. I've attempted to contact Carenado about this, but two days later, I've had no response. Has anybody else had this trouble with them? Kurt
  17. >Screwed by the military again:-lol How is this comment funny? Go back and read the FARs. The PILOT (not ATC) is responsible for safe NAVIGATION of the aircraft. You've written some good, helpful posts, for which I am grateful...but now, you're just another one of those people who likes to bash the military. How sad.Kurt KalbfleischChief Fire Controlman (Surface Warfare)United States Navy (Retired)
  18. Roberto,If you have Lee Swordy's AFCAD2 program, you can look at the gates on your Barajas AFCAD file and see how they're assigned to various airlines. A lot of major airports have websites with terminal maps that can help you verify the correctness of the gate assignments. In your aircraft.cfg file, under the [flightsim.x] header for the plane you're flying, you should locate the following two lines:atc_parking_types=GATEatc_parking_codes=ASH("ASH" is the three-letter code for Mesa Airlines, so you'll have to find and enter the appropriate code for your aircraft.)Hope that helps.Kurt
  19. Is anybody using it? What does it do, exactly? What kind of frame rate hits can I expect? Thanks in advance,Kurt
  20. Been a while since I posted...came back because of the AMAZING B1900D you guys did. I did a quick search for comments on this issue and only found a couple comments, none reporting any problems, but I wonder...has anybody else had problems getting the nose to unstick when the bird is at or near MTOW? I've had to resort to full nose-up trim and it STILL doesn't want to rotate less than ten or fifteen knots over V2. The POH says that you should trim NOSE DOWN for heavier weights. Also, landings were a bear because the bird just seemed to want to be a lawn dart.So...I looked into it, and I'm still playing with it. My most recent attempt makes the mains compress so that it looks right on the ramp, and though my takeoff was less than perfect (my fault, forgot to trim), my landing was an absolute greaser...without question the best landing I've ever made in the sim. Makes a nice "chirp" sound, by the way.Another nice part is that I can do the math for weight and balance by the book and it seems to work.Anybody else experience problems with the stock config being nose heavy? Once I've flown this a few dozen times with CG shifted across the range, I'll be happy to post the edits to that part of the config, assuming I have PMDG's permission, of course.Kurt KalbfleischKSAN
