  1. I'm using as much of MS Flight as you can get for free, and will no doubt download additional stuff after a while. Meanwhile, I'd like to poisition aircraft better, like at the end of a runway or at a terminal. At this point the only way I know how to do it is to move the airplane ion the map, and that is pretty inaccurate, or fly in and taxi-taxi-taxi. Is there a better way?Barney
  2. I am bookmarking this fascinating topic! There's some interesting stuff here, and I thank you.I'd be astonished that the Icon and Stearman don't have trim tabs, except that they don't have flaps, either. However, before I found that out I used the Trim Up and Trim Down buttons on the keyboard for the Icon, and they worked just fine. I have also used the Rudder: Move Left, and Rudder: Move Right keyboard keys, and they worked fine too. Of course I'm not using my Yoke. I'm using my mouse, which also works fine, and I find that flying MS Flight is a whole lot quicker and simpler than flying FSX (which is fun in a different way).Barney
  3. Hi Guys,I'm using the CH Flight Yoke LE, which connects via a USB port. The Spacebar (alone) puts the spot plane behind the one I'm flying. I'm not sure what you mean by a "real" hat switch, but mine is a circular, stubby conical, grey button atop the right handle of the yoke. I have it configured to pan through the views from the cockpit.I'm just getting back to FSX after a couple of years, and I've forgotten half of what I knew. I DL'd MS Flight and learned that a) you don't get much for free, and b) that placing the spot plane behind your aircraft makes VFR navigating and landing a whole lot easier. Learned a few other things, too, but that's a different forum. ;O)Thanks very much for your help!Barney
  4. Thank you!Word Not Allowed, hitting the spacebar did the job. Funny, I couldn't find the information in the Help files or online!Ray and Wizard, the hat switch on my yoke is configured to switch the views from the cockpit: left, back, right, and forward. I don't think it can be configured to move the spot plane.Barney
  5. I would like to change the position of the Spot Plane so that it is directly behind the aircraft I'm flying. I don't need to change the distance, just the relative position. Can anybody tell me how to do this? Thanks,Barney
  6. The post suggested by H2egc (http://forum.avsim.n...ck-sensitivity/) shows how to edit the appropriate file. I did, and by yoke works much better now, although I want to tweak it some more. Note that my yoke is shown as CH FLIGHT YOKE LE even though it connects through a USB port; yours may be different. Also note that your <MapVersion> number may differ from the example.Editing this file works beautifully, so many thanks to N4gix, who posted it.
  7. Thanks, h2egc! I'll try it.Wouldn't it be nice if MS would put in an adjustment! Maybe in the next release...?Barney
  8. The mouse is great in MS Flight, but I tried using a CH Products Yoke in MS Flight...and it's so sensitive that I can't control the aircraft! The yoke works fine in MS FSX. I know of no way to control yoke sensitivity in MS Flight, but if anybody has a way please let me know!
  9. First, let me thank both Turner and Scott for your prompt and informative replies. I appreciate your help, gentlemen!Turner, thanks for your concise definitions of the different products. That makes things a lot clearer to start with, and makes Scott's technical explanations easier to understand. If you do try the interactions, back up first, and best wishes for the enduring health of your computer!Scott, your technical explanation makes my head hurt, :( but that's nothing new. Below is what I understood you to say.I didn't know that MicroSoft had not created world-wide textures, but it doesn't surprise me, or bother me, since most of my flying and sightseeing are in North America. Beyond that:First, I think you're telling me that UTX will (or can) enhance GEX. But is that really the case, or are you saying that I'd be just as well off using UTX instead of GEX?Second, I think you're telling me that MegaScenery will sit on top of GEX and UTX, therefore effectively replacing them in the area the MegaScenery title covers. (By the way Turner, MegaScenery 2004 does not do seasons; MegaScenery X does.)Third, it sounds like FEX is for clouds and other atmospheric conditions. Frankly, I'm not that interested, so will go with the default.Since I already have a bunch of MegaScenery, I guess I should buy UTX and (possibly) GEX for the areas MegaScenery doesn't cover.Did I understand what you said?Barney
  10. I have a number of MegaScenery X titles (and some earlier MegaScenery titles too), and now I'm seeing products called "Ground Environment X" and "Ultimate Terrain X" packages. Today I got an email selling yet another, called "Flight Environment X."How do these three types of products relate to each other? Do they work together? Do they enhance each other? Are they competitors? Which is best?I'd appreciate your thoughts!BTW, I'm running FSX under the following configuration:
  11. Gentlemen, I appreciate your help!I added the line in the .cfg file, and was able to set the sensitivities and null zones to something that works for me. I know this will make FSX a far more enjoyable experience. Thanks,Barney
  12. Um... my FSX.CFG file has only the following in the [CONTROLS] section:[CONTROLS]Controls_Default=StandardControls_Current=StandardKBDAIL=64KBDELEV=64KBDRUD=64And a search on Stick_Sensitivity_Mode (with and without underscores) and on "Stick" and "Sensitivity yield no results.I don't understand!
  13. I thought I had said I wanted email notification of replies to my post, but I guess I didn't. I will now go away and try your suggestions, for which I am most grateful.Barney
  14. I haven't used FSX for over a year, but I got a new computer with Win 7 (config below) and installed it. I use a CH Flight Yoke LE, and I've always had problems with control sensitivity, but it seems as though the sensitivity settings don't work at all!As you can see from the attached, the controller is enabled, the correct controller is shown in the Controller Type field, the sensitivity settings are very low, and the null zone settings are high. Even so, it takes only the slightest movement of the yoke to send me veering wildly in one direction or the other. How can I make the Sensitivity and Null Zone controls work? Thanks,Barney
  15. Hey Greystone! I believe you have solved the problem! No time for an exhaustive check, but a quick check shows that the viewpoint positioning problem is fixed. Thanks!Barney
  16. I've been away from FS for a while...when last heard from I was running FSX under Win XP. Then I upgraded, getting a system designed to run FSX efficiently. I installed FSX and both service packs, and it seems to work--except that I have some view problems. I've found them on the Ultralight, the Cessna 172, and the Beechcraft Baron, so I assume there are similar problems with other aircraft.:In Cockpit View mode the instruments (at least) are distorted horizontally. It's a wide screen monitor, and I can fix the distortion by getting out of full screen mode, but then my busy desktop is visible around the edges of FSX. Also, the hat switch on my yoke doesn't pan. It snaps to the view.In Virtual Cockpit view the distortion is gone and the hat switch pans the view, but the instruments are not as bright/visible as in the Cockpit view.In both views I'm having problems with viewpoint. I can't go back far enough to see the full panel plus the full windshield. (I was able to do so on my old system). It seems that the seat back gets in the way! In the Baron, when I advance the throttle the viewpoint goes back so that all I can see is the back of the seat.I have the same problems at a variety of display resolutions. Can you folks help? Here's the configuration:
  17. Hey Gents, Perhaps I should have mentioned that I'm running Windows 7, but I'll find both CFG files, and update both of them. Thanks for the good information!Barney
  18. I have just upgraded to a new computer, and have reinstalled FSX after being away from it for a long time. I have a number of MegaScenery packages, and I
  19. ppgstf, I have a tech here who will build me a system...the question (now answered) was what to have him build. Of course I will also check out your suggestion, DonMR, and see what jetlines is all about.Thank you both!Barney
  20. OK...I have what I need, I think. Thank you all--especially Bert, who seems to have netted it out.Barney
  21. Gents, you're being most helpful, and I thank you.I hear what you're saying about building my own system, but consider this: I'm nearly 75 years old, don't have near the energy (or strength) I used to have. But I have a (mostly political) blog, I volunteer at the local police department, I'm president of a service organization, and I just got a new dog who is two-years old and completely untrained. I fondly remember the days before I retired: I wasn't nearly as busy, and I got paid a hell of a lot more. No, I'm not complaining. I'm trying to show you why build-it-yourself is not a good solution for me.I don't think much of Dell: their tech support people don't speak or understand either English or computers--and you saw what Plainplane and C09G had to say. I suspect they're right. I have a Compaq laptop--OK, it was cheap, but it had more bloatware than I could believe! I finally borrowed a USB-connected floppy drive and upgraded from Vista Home Basic to XP Home. It now works fine. I have a feeling that no matter what off-the-shelf machine I bought I would have terrible problems. So it seems to me that a custom-built machine is what I want. If you could answer the following questions it would help me to spec the machine:1. I don't want to overclock the processor because overclocking will reduce the life expectancy of the processor. Will a 3.5GHz processor do the job?2. Does FSX utilize a quad-core processor, or will a dual-core do the job as well, or nearly as well?3. How much memory should I get?4. How fast does my HD need to be?And the overriding all-important question: how much (ballpark) is this beast going to cost me? I'd like to keep it down to around $2,000.I really do appreciate your thoughs to this point. If you can help me with these four questions I'll be all set. I think.Barney
  22. Geez, guys, what great answers! I now have a lot of understandable information to work with, and I am most grateful for your help. Thanks,Barney
  23. Thanks, Gents.Lessee...OC means overclock, right? How do I do that?OK...an Nvidia 9800GTX or GT. A high end Quad or Dual processor that will run at 3.5 GHz or better. How about memory? 4GB in DDR2s at 800MHz?Yeah, I've heard that Windows 7 is a lot like Vista: what troubles me about Vista is the lack of speed, the lack of stability, and the changes for the sake of change. I've heard that W7 will correct at least some of those problems. But until it comes out....XP for me.I take your point, C09G, but building my own just isn't practical. I suppose I could have one built, but I may be moving, and support could be a problem. Thanks, guys...I now have some specs. Lets see what I can find....Barney
  24. Thanks...but I want to walk into a store like Best Buy, or go on the internet to (for example) Dell, for an off-the-shelf system. There's some flexibility in components: I might be able to upgrade the video card, add more memory, and get a bigger hard drive. But what do I look for?Better than 3.5GHz processor? How much memory...as much as possible? What kind of memory? Dual core? Quad core? Both McCrash and ryanbatcund suggested overclocking, but I have no idea how to do that! Sorry: I was technical years ago, but have been a mere user for many years now and things have changed.Vista? No way! I've tried it, didn't like it. 64-bit XP? I believe I'm running 32-bit XP now; what are the implications of running my other programs with XP 64?Sorry to be so ignorant...but I am ignorant, and don't have time to learn all I'd have to learn.I appreciate your help.Barney
