  1. How nice. I just discovered the creation of this forum and I'm with you. I'll be sticking with FS9 for quite some time to come. It looks great on my system and the leap to Vista/FSX/New System may never, ever happen. Now to my question: There used to be a sticky in the forums that listed tweaks for the FS9.config file and I'll be darned if I can find where it's gone. Any clues? Also, my decision to invest quite substantially in FS9 poses another question: What would be the recommended add-ons for FS9? I have the PMDG 747-400 and will be buying all their other aircraft but I'm referring more to navigation aids and weather generators compatible with PMDG aircraft. Active Camera, I'm advised, is a 'must have', so is there anything else I should'nt live without?Jon S.
  2. Vic,Thanks for your reply. Must be OldTimers disease but I just realised I posted this in the wrong forum so I'll understand if I'm chastised and It's moved back into the general area. Sorry in advance to those concerned. It seems to me, Vista and FSX go hand in glove with 'New System'. What prompted me, initially, to start scratching my chin was a comment made by one of the PMDG guys that the MD-11 may not be developed for FS9. Now, I realise that PMDG have a highly regarded reputation and a genuine committment to Flight Simming but I still considered this a curious (POSSIBLE) situation. I concede that PMDG must be driven by the market and where their offerings can generate the best outcome for PMDG but is the Simming community so darn 'cashed-up' that they are able to buy the latest, most powerful, shiny system, at their whim? I don't think so. In fact, I believe Vista may very well be too much of a quantum leap for the savvy computer user (most Simmers) and he/she will share our intent to wait a considerable time before moving on. The probability that M$ will also be instituting even more draconian PA in this new release is another disincentive. One could be excused for thinking FSX is merely a lure to encourage the traditionally 'early adoptors' of newer tech to move immediately. Banish any thought that I am resistant to change. I spent much of my life involved in Marketing, with some powerful multi-nationals, so I'm reasonably 'across' the game. You have helped me make a decision. It's FS9 and add-ons for me for the foreseeable future. Who knows? Maybe if everyone starts to migrate early, these add-ons will plummet in price. I still wonder though if there may be a lull (Marketing wise) for operations akin to PMDG if they do not continue to develop for FS9 for an acceptable period of time during the transition.Jon S.
  3. I'm not so new to flight simming but the Queen is my first payware aircraft ( with which, I am very pleased). Here is my dilemma: After reading many of the posts, one would assume that FS9 is a 'shot duck' and will no longer be supported ie; new aircraft development and that Vista is now the holy grail to which we should all aspire. There are a heap of addons, Active Camera, FSNavigator etc. which I am investigating to make my simming experience more enjoyable but I have a very limited income and I'm not too sure whether I'll be wasting my money.I'm seriously considering the purchase of the 400F but the same dilemma applies. I also wish to purchase the 737's but again yada, yada, yada. I have about as much hope of building a Vista capable system within the next year as 'Buckley' and I'm wondering whether it would be a better idea (seeing that FS9 and XP are now orphans)just to save my dough and put it toward a new system. Anyone else having the same considerations?Jon S.
  4. QUOTE:Furthermore, I think this might somehow be illegal. If it isn't it, such a shackle should be made illegal. I think it's time that the Government stands up for the rights of us consumers and drags M$'s butt back into court. Apparently the slap on the wrist they got last time was not sufficient enough punishment to make them see the light and correct the error of their "let's play the monopoly card" bullying ways./QUOTEUnfortunately, this is quite legal, I believe. Also, with the likes of HP getting on the co-operative drm bandwagon, pretty soon we'll all be going to respective manufacturers to ask if it's ok to logon to the www.Where is this going to place those like myself who builds their own systems and delights in completely re-installing their os every 6 months to obtain a virgin install?Let's face it. We will all, in the fullness of time, migrate to Vista. We'll have no choice and we will not like doing it but we will. As more and more software is written for Vista and M$ bins support for XP as they did with '98 and ME, we will be at their mercy. It seems to me that M$'s monopoly has enabled them to create a totally 'new' market for additional software upgrades, as much of the software we all use with XP will not migrate to Vista. I'm generally not a M$ knocker and it is very early days, yet but the future does not seem to be all that bright for the 'tinkerer'. Having said that, I guess some bright spark will come up with a workaround.Jon S.
  5. Orrite! OK!, It takes a while for the penny to drop when you're my age. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. Thanks for that. It works in the VC. What a marvellous incentive to start using the VC.Jon S.
  6. I no longer derive any pleasure from flying any of the freeware or default aircraft I have loaded in my FS9 since purchasing and installing the 'Queen of the Skies'. I have also become a PMDG ######, poo-pooing all of my friends' and acquaintances' flight models and fde's for various aircraft.:-) OK, that may be a bit of an exagreration but the first sentence is absolutely true. A couple of genuine questions:1) I have completed an excellent tutorial which, during a phase of flight required changing the Altimeter Reference Knob and the Minimums Knob to different modes. I can change the data but the knobs do not rotate to different selections, Are they meant to?2) If not, will an upgrade to the 400F model these features?Jon S.
  7. Thank's for your post. It was most edifying. I'm with others here, though. I will be waiting until Vista reaches at least, sp1 before I shell out for the necessary hardware to run it. FSX will be a natural transition, though but until such time FS9 will have to suffice......and yeah!.....let's hear those tweaks!Jon S.
  8. Pete,Thanks for the 'heads up' on the 400F. If it's a download, then, so be it. Yes the $A is'nt too flash but I just spent the last 7 weeks in the UK. That's when you really find out how woeful it is. 40p to the dollar, plus everything costs 3 times as much and me a pensioner. Thank God I was given the trip by my daughter who lives there (married a Scot). I'm looking forward to my next cheque so I can upgrade.Jon S.
  9. I recently purchased and installed the PMDG 747-400. Mine is the full retail package, bought from a local store here in Australia. I like the idea of having the disk as a hard copy but was unable to find the 400F in similar packaging in the product racks. So I guess my question is: Is the 400F available as a retail package or only as an online download? One of the other reasons I like the idea of the hard packaging is that I have installed and reinstalled (for different reasons) the Queen, 3 or 4 times and did not need to approach PMDG, cap in hand for any reactivation. Don't misunderstand me. I have no problem at all with you protecting your intellectual property. It is, unfortunately, the way things are. Even so, I'd still like to own the disk.Jon S.
  10. Thanks for the replies and the link to the previous posts. I confess to having had this problem before with some freeware aircraft so these failures did'nt completely take me by surprise. Previously the problems were mostly associated with ILS. All is well and once again, thanks for your responses.Jon S.
  11. Ahem..silly moi. I can't see too many airlines, virtual or whatever giving me an aircraft to fly. It seems the problem has something to do with the 'default' MS9 flight I selected. I merely selected the Cessna, lined up ready for takeoff, thus when I load my flight, cruising at .84 mach, FL350 I failed to notice that the undercart was fully down. How embarrassing. I hope the collective ears at PMDG did'nt burn too hot last night when I was talking about you. I am now fully back in love with the Queen. God knows what it's going to be like when I start to program random failures.Jon S.
  12. When I reload a saved game from within the normal FS9 'My Saved Flights', I cannot for the life of me rearm the A/T. I've tried just about everything ie; reloading a panel state, saved with the FS9 save, just in case, I thought, killing then rearming the AP (countless times) and I'm becoming a trifle frustrated. Does anyone have a solution to this problem, please? Also, after a while (only with reloaded 'save' games, the engine sounds starts to scream and the red speed indicators in the PFD invert and appear at the bottom area of the speed tape. This is not fun after having flown a 6.5 hour flight (have 6 more to go) and cannot resume flying an aircraft which should be a pleasure to fly. Any assistancw will be greatly appreciated. Just off to kick the cat.Jon Shearer
  13. Thank you for your reply, Mats. The 737 was going to be my next purchase but I think the 400F will be a better proposition. The 737 will have to wait a month or so.Jon Shearer
  14. I have installed some of the liveries for the 'Queen', some with other engines than the default model eg; the Qantas 747-400 with RR RB211 engines. This is not reflected on the fmc/ident page, where the default powerplants are still listed. I can accept this if it is normal (possibly something to do with FS9 programming)and I have been attempting to absorb the many manuals and type rating courses (gratefully)but I may have missed how to change this in the fmc. I'd appreciate comments or assistance.JonAdded: All NAVdata etc. has been updated.
  15. It's OK. I finally found the additional files on the PMDG main site/main page announcements.Jon
  16. I have the wonderful 'Queen of the Skies' offering by PMDG and it's quite a daunting learning curve, compared to the freeware aircraft I'm used to flying. Suffice it to say, I am now totally sold on payware products of this quality. Very inexpensive entertainment. My problem: The link supplied to download the 3 Type Rating Courses at PMDG-Ops (to download the .zip files necessary) only provides access to Lesson #1 files. I've searched everywhere for the additional, required files or links to same but have been unable to find them. It's probably me but could somebody assist me with this? It will be greatly appreciated.Jon
  17. I have a preference to save my default M$FS9 aircraft with a Cold and Dark Cockpit. I have experienced that when I create a flight with an add-on panel/aircraft, the engines will not start using the normal ignition switches on the panel, unless I first start the engines with CTRL+E and then shut everything back off and save that particular flight. Everything is fine on a reload and the panel works correctly with engines igniting using the panel switches provided. So my question is: Is this a quirk in FS9 or is it a coding problem in the add-on panel? If it is the latter, does anyone know how to add some instructions to the aircraft.cfg or whatever to alleviate the problem?Jon
