  1. I've ported over all the flightplans I generated for the 737 and 747 FMC's. All these were generated in the FS9 program with FSNavigator installed, then nicked from the PMDG FLIGHTPLANS folder and pasted in to the FSX, PMDG FLIGHTPLANS folder. They're working fine but I have to re-jig a few altitudes, here and there. I guess I'm asking anyone in the know, if these flightplans are, in fact quite valid in the FSX FMC's...or is there something to look out for?Jon Shearer
  2. The thing that brought me back to Flight Simming was a Computer I built and FSX. Or so I thought. Then I bought this JS4100. This is a complex aircraft...presented by its maker and PMDG, as accurately as possible, given the limitations, in some areas, of FSX. Microsoft, I salute you for giving all of us a pretty darn good program. To PMDG: I congratulate you. This is one hell of an effort.Jon ShearerAdded: Get it if you don't have it. It will give you, as close to really, what modern Pilots contend with on a daily basis. Yup! that's why I've come back to this fascinating hobby.

    Earth Hour

Y'know, I'm not always right but I'm never in doubt. It must really give you a warm. gooey feeling, to think you're contributing to the wellbeing of the planet by being environmentally aware and embracing this con that is Climate Change. Notify the media: Climate Change has been happening for (now, let me see) 4.5 million years? Yet, you get this group that call themselves, 'Environmental Scientists' (Meteorologists), who say they can predict the weather conditions on Earth in 50 years time. Well...My experience with these, so called, 'Environmental Scientists' (Meteorologists), is that they can't accurately predict the weather, tomorrow, yet , some believe they are accurate in their predictions for 50 years hence. Not this 'little black duck'.There's more than a touch of Cynic in me, which subscribes to the prediction (and the main reason, Politicians embrace the con of climate change) that it's an opportunity to foist a feeling of 'Guilt' on the populace and therefore, justifying a huge new tax on the AIR. I mean, they've taxed everything else to the hilt and wasted the money. They need more money to waste. AIR!!, That's THE ANSWER!! I applaud you for your efforts on the behalf of Mother Earth. I'm sure you must love her, as I do...but please, don't be conned into thinking you're making any kind of difference to anything regarding Climate Change. Mother Earth has dealt with it for 4.5 million years. Nothing as insignificant as humans is going to deter her from doing it for another 4.5 million.Jon
  4. Gawd! Havn't they heard of lipstick pink or even, beige? :( Jon Shearer
  5. To be more specific: I was thinking more along the lines of a 'modernisation' of the visuals in the cockpit. I'd be surprised if Boeing would be using the old babypoo brown (very '60's) in their new model. The flight characteristics? Well, with this new wing and 4 new power plants dangling from it, I would expect there to be some differences.Jon Shearer
  6. I was reading a comment that $US 24.95 was a little pricey for a repaint (a little unfair) and my considerations were in addition to that. First, I purchased with $AU (91.5c to the greenback) and I'm a Pensioner (with begging bowl). Second consideration was, should I forgo the purchase and put that meagre amount towards my next purchase, the MDII. Well, I bought it and could not be happier with the decision. It's not just a repaint. A fair amount of work has gone into the model and the wing is spectacular. Impressed also, with the new soundset. To the people at PMDG, keep up the great work. Any forward plans to tweak the 747-400 flight characteristics, the VC and the 2D cockpit in the future, to reflect more accurately this new Boeing model?Jon Shearer
  7. Thanks, Ryan. Everything went without a hitch, even down to the retrieval of my order id. FYI, the MDII is my next purchase and eventually, the full pmdg fleet. Thank you for your assistance.Jon Shearer
  8. I have a dual hdd system and 2 os's, one on each drive. On one drive win xp pro 32 bit, the other win7 64bit. I wish to migrate all my simming (fs 9.1 and fsx) over to win7. On the fsx installation on the xp pro drive, I have a fully ligit, verifiable purchase of the pmdg b747-400/f. These are the (watermarked, I believe) files I originally downloaded after the purchase was approved. So I'm inquiring in advance to my attempt to install this file on win7 64bit:1) Is what I intend to do lawful?2) Will I experience any problems with re-activation, in fact, will I need to re-activate?I had been used to a flight1 wrapper arrangement previously with my other (fs9) payware aircraft but those I downloaded from pmdg have a blue and white, circular vortex(?).Jon Shearer
  9. Well...yes...very embarrassing :( In my defence let me say I've spent way too much time in fs9. Sooo, fsx only gives you a choice, not both. OK. Here's me off to 'READ THE INSTRUCTIONS' :( Thank you very much for solving this for me.Jon Shearer
  10. I've been out of the FS loop for a while but have returned with a renewed enthusiasm and interest. I have run into a conundrum, (probably of my own making) which follows:I open the Queens 'load manager' and in the VC off/on dropdown, I choose ON, then save the configuration to file. I boot the fsx program and go to my 747-400 which still only sports a 2d cockpit. If I open 'load manager' with fsx, running, the VC on/off dropdown is greyed out. Can anyone advise me how to enable the VC, please?. Or offer any other suggestions to fix it?Jon Shearer
  11. I'm running fsx and fs9 on a win xp pro installation. If I first open 'load manager' without fsx running and configure the aircraft and select VC/on, I then save that configuration to file. When I open fsx I still only have the 2d view. I then open 'load manager' with the program already running and notice that the option dropdown for VC on/off is greyed out. I have not yet reinstalled the aircraft but wanted to consult here, in case it's something I'm not getting. Can anyone assist, please?Jon
  12. Due to outside pressures I was side-tracked from my beloved hobby for around 12 months. I'm back with renewed enthusiasm and vigour and expected to experience a positive shift toward FSX with the advent of Vista. NOT SO! (I hear you cry). So, where are we at? I'm seeing posts mooting FS11 and my understanding is that FSX is a far superior product to FS9 but short of a 'mainframe' that would dim the lights of a small city to run it adequately, many have resorted to the tried and true FS9. I gotta tell you people, I'm confused. Moores Law seems to have taken quite a 'hit' lately as well, with the 2 big guys producing dual and quadruple cored CPU's in an attempt to satiate the hunger for speed and bandwidth. I point out at this juncture, other than the afforementioned 'mainframe', the PC system has not been invented yet that can run Vista with all the sliders to the right, matching the speed of higher-end systems running XP.... DDR3, SLI, 2gb RAM (base) are also with us. M$ has decided to support XP until the return of Christ (not out of benevolence I suspect but more because of the disappointing uptake of Vista not to mention the reluctance of big business/Governments etc. to institute 'change' for the sake of 'change')All of these aspects have confused the bejeezus out of the marketplace (me too) and I have no idea which way to jump with my next computer build. Rockefeller is not my surname, though, I'm willing to unload some reasonably serious money. Obviously, I want to get as much bang for my buck as I am able. So, here's the dilemma:Would it be advisable to stick with my trusty 2.8ghz single core system running FS9 for another 12 months until hardware catches-up with software (big maybe) or 'take a punt' and build now?I recall expressing the same confusion 12 months ago and little appears to have changed.Jon Shearer
  13. Does anyone have any clue as>to what I've broken?>>JonWell, there you go. FWIW, I was correct. I did have Landing and Taxi lights visible from the 2D Cockpit but as I've rebuilt the FS9 Config file a few times, a setting was changed. Under 'GRAPHICS' (for those who do not know, GRAPHICS has square brackets around it), there is a setting: See_Self=0. Change the 0 (zero) to a 1 and save the file. Whoopeedo! Landing and Taxi light visible from the 2D Cockpit.Jon
  14. I can't exactly remember but I'm sure I had Landing and Taxi lights, visible from the 2D cockpit, previously. Well, they're not there now and I have done so much modification to quite a few aircraft that I think it might just be my fault. They don't even work in the default Cessna.I can't use the Virtual Cockpit on many of the payware models I fly because of the inadequacy of my GPU and I've only just begun to enjoy flying at night. Does anyone have any clue as to what I've broken?Jon
  15. Kim,Thanks for your post. It appears that GPU's have gone ahead in leaps and bounds since I built my present system. I'm limited to the 4 pin molex, as well. I'd probably be better advised to stick with the one I have and run FS9 without any serious weather. I have always had nVidia cards, going back to the days when they were the 'duck's guts' of video cards. I suspect that the reason nVidia have not addressed the AA problem is because, they can't. Why would a company, trying to compete against some serious competition, not correct such a problem? Methinks it's probably something to do with the actual design of the chip. Having said that, I'm not anywhere near being an expert and others with far more knowledge will correct me. If the problem is merely a re-write of some drivers and nVidia have decided to ignore the problem (and it's loyal customer base) then, they have lost another customer when I go to dual core and a dual video card set-up.Jon

  17. A system upgrade is out of the question but I'm thinking a 2nd hand 8xAGP, high end card might be on the cards. Depending on price, I'll go for the best I can get. I can't actually remember where the AGP/PCI GPU's tended to cut off but I was aiming at something considerably better than my Geforce 5900xt. Then I read many posts where people were sledgeing (not without good reason) nVidia's inability to correct the shortcomings of their drivers, applicable to FS in general. AA, where apparently the nVidia cards try to Anti-Alias clouds etc. So, would I be better advised to aim at an ATI card, or do their offerings come with a whole new set of problems? I could'nt care less about other 'games' but only my FS9 framerates, where, once I introduce even mild weather I recieve a huge FR hit.Jon
  18. A little update and a question. I purchased the ATR 72-500 (superb, and will be grabbing FS2Crew for it very soon). Another purchase is the Aeroworx B200 King Air. For detail and overall realism I reckon this is about as good as it can ever get. I'm still not even half-way up the very steep learning curve but perserverence is the key. Now, this coming week I'm going to be adding a 707 and a 727 to the fleet. I want the Dreamfleet 727 but a certain website is having a sale for 24hrs on the 12/07/07, offering the Legendary 707 for 9.99 euros. Does anyone know how this offering stacks up against other 707 products?Ultimately, I'll also get the Maddog but right now I want some of the older iron.Jon
  19. Because I have a good range of payware aircraft now that provide me a broad choice, aircraft vs flight type, I want to 'trim the sim' to its bare necessities. Viz: only the default Cessna/'s (this to retain the recommended start-up flight for the payware aircraft) and only the default flight in the 'Flight Simulator Files' folder. All the other aircraft and all the other flights can go, even Rod Much ado can take a break if it's possible. He and Mr. and Mrs. King for that matter. I pretty much know how to delete the aircraft and flights but the other program features, nup.So, bottom line, has anyone done this? How do you throw out the bathwater without the baby following suit?JonAdded: An additional reason to do this is because I have so many other mods, (scenery, airports etc.) that I want to minimise the whole program's 'footprint' as much as I can.
  20. Dan,I'm fast coming to the conclusion that my monitor is the main problem. It's not considered a good one by any means (Mitsubishi Diamond View 19") and I think it's becoming a bit long in the tooth, like its owner. However, there have been many panels written by others that provide a range of panel lighting. This is by no means a criticism of PMDG as their charter is for maximum realism but I do have some freeware panels which are far more conducive to night flying than the 2D PMDG panel as the ambient lighting can be set a number of ways, which reduces my personal eyestrain.I envy you being able to actually fly in the real world. It was a dream of mine, once and I was having lessons in a Piper Cherokee. Then this tall, beautiful blonde made me lose focus.Jon
  21. Yes it is but it does'nt turn on the Dome Light on the OHP. That's only available from the VC/OHP. It's probably not that big a deal it's just that the stark contrast affects my impaired vision. If I could find a way of just lowering the contrast it would be a help.Jon
  22. I have a couple of the PMDG aircraft and I fly my 737-800 all the time. Because I get much better framerates, I seldom install the VC, thus, I am unable to access the OHD flood lights. Consequently, because of my 60yo eyes, night flying becomes difficult for me, using the lighting provided for the 2D panel. Is there a way of installing other lighting or accessing the OHD Floodlight switch from the 2D panel?Jon
  23. Gary,I had the same happen this week after purchasing FSUIPC and applying my new key to v3.4. Ooer! Slapped in v3.75 and Robert's your relative.Jon
  24. Kim,Great idea that. Would never have contemplated it. For Jimmy, another way to access this is to 'Run' dxdiag'Jon
  25. Jimmy,DISABLING HYPERTHREADING. I can't say I've experienced the problem but I have read threads where people have set the CPU Affinity other than the default. This, I understand, disables hyperthreading. To do this, right click the taskbar and open 'Task Manager' (FS needs to be running) Right click the program (FS9.exe) in the processes menu and a box will appear, asking for 'set priority, set affinity'. Set priority to high and uncheck one of the boxes in 'set affinity'. I understand that this forces FS9 to run without Hyperthreading. Guru's will correct me but this is my belief. I have also read where this act increases the framerate of FS9. Just one other thing. You'll need to set this each time you run FS9 as I don't know any way of setting this as a default setting. Also, after setting the affinity and priority, you need to close the task manager. Probably a 'no brainer' but I thought I'd mention it.Jon
