  1. Not from what I'm reading. It's 64 bit and that's good but it sure has a long way to go. 'Correctly implemented', I was referring to the evolution of the product and the increase in developer support for high quality add-ons. Just before coming in here I was a click away from buying XP 10 Global but didn't . The reason? I have unloaded a shipload of money on add-ons for FSX and I'm reticent to unload more on a flight simulator that suffers from many of the shortcomings mentioned in this thread. I'm also on the cusp of building my next computer based on a 6 core cpu with buckets of RAM and dual sli, so don't think my interest level isn't high in XP 10 64 bit. It's astronomical! So I will continue to fly FSX without weather, so none of my PMDG aircraft fail from a system freeze after hours of inter-continental flight, or fail because the winds aloft debacle in FSX almost stops the aircraft in mid-air. If I want all sliders to the right and weather, I go back to trusty FS9, which on my system is rock solid. I wish the developers of XP 10 64 bit every success and will be following their efforts and improvements very closely. When the product is matured and tested in the marketplace and many of the idiosynchracies ironed out. I will happily pay twice the price they're asking at present. P3D? I don't think so because LM, imho are not that interested in simmers per se. I believe they think they're catering to a different market. So, yes, as you stated 'it already is' (64 bit) and isn't it great that someone has had the intestinal fortitude to go that way. I will continue to follow with great interest. BTW, another reason I did not purchase XP 10 is because I could not ascertain with any reasonable degree of accuracy, whether XP 10 Global contained the 64 bit code, as another page on their website implied that the 64 bit version was only in beta release. Jon
  2. It is not before time that flight simming has finally gone 64 bit. I intend to follow the XP 10 conversation and XP 10's development for a while, yet before I jump. Me? I am at present trying to decide on a new system, although my old one is still cranking along quite well. If'n XP 10 64 bit still shows promise in 6 months time, then I will invest in add-ons and sceneries and airports just the same as I did with FS9 and FSX. I predict that the 64 bit platform, if implemented correctly will be the next huge thing that will drive this sector of the software and hardware market. Something good has to happen soon as the developers are running out of future revenue streams. Jon
  3. Malwarebytes came up empty. Whew. Doesn't AVG lock the files though if it can't identify it? Prevent them from being used. They weren't healed or removed. Jon
  4. AVG has just reported 2 files have been infected by fsx_slew.exe/_fsx_slew.exe/ or something like that. Pretty close. I had not done a scan beforehand but I've only just turned on DX10 to have a look. I'm wondering if they're false positives. Please God, be false positives. Jon
  5. I agree with what you say. I'm about to buy my first installation of 8, this week. I'm 65 and the old brain cells take some kick starting but I've only used it twice and found it very intuitive. The real 'Game Changer' for all of us, is if they release their new file system as the next Win 9. It was originally supposed to be released with Win 7. What a revenue stream. I've been around the internet for as long as its existed. I find far less flaming of 8 v 7. Jon n. pl. fo·rums also fo·ra (fôr, fr) 1. a. The public square or marketplace of an ancient Roman city that was the assembly place for judicial activity and public business. b. A public meeting place for open discussion. c. A medium for open discussion or voicing of ideas, such as a newspaper, a radio or television program, or a website. 2. A public meeting or presentation involving a discussion usually among experts and often including audience participation. 3. A court of law; a tribunal.
  6. I have not had the confidence to do that as yet. I had a logon years ago but never went on with it.
  7. PMDG 747 400, standard scenery although that's going to change. The 747 works at every other airport. I'm going to fly a shorter route to confirm that. Yes, a go-around, I need to learn how to do a go-around. That is a given but 8l having an absence of gs capture or glideslope is something I have to correct. Then I'll learn how to perform the correct procedure for a go-around. That's as soon as I set the right keypresses for the various disconnects. Jon
  8. I agree totally that missed approach education, is a must for one such as I. Although, I'm in a flight simulator and it's supposed to work. It would have been fine if it had just captured the glideslope. I did get one wheel on the runway (the front, I think) Jon
  9. I have just completed my very first flight from KLAX to PHNL. Everything during the flight was superb and absolutely beautiful flying into a setting tropical sun. I configure the aircraft perfectly (well) for short final and the ils doesn't capture the glideslope. Then it's elbows and nether regions which is totally unsuccessful and I end up in the bay. Nearly six hours. Don't you hate that? I should ask: Why does it pick ils 8l at phnl to decide not to work? Is it maybe fsx. Jon
  10. I'll say she's beautiful to look at. Cop the size of the buckets on the wings. I mentioned this in an earlier post where the flow of the curve at the tailplane was reversed to suggest a tail-feather. It's done here, too but to better effect. Very cool artwork. Jon
  11. True and Black, any of the darker pigments really but they've got the technology now where colour is achieved through miniscule additions of pigment to a 20 ltr bucket so the weight is not such a factor. The amount of pigment used on a 747, say Dark Blue, would be quite heavy. I think they'd use a few more than 2 x 20 ltr buckets to do a complete hull and engine cowl paint. Jon
  12. The science of modern paint technology is a source of wonder. I used to mix specialised paints and the range of chemicals used is considerable. viz: 30 ml of a certain chemical affecting the viscosity of a complete 300 ltr batch. I'd love to see the paint recipe on the Blackbird but I think it might be classified. Jon
  13. Very interesting and informative replies. Thank You and I've been reading those links for what feels like hours. This running an airline business is getting complicated if obscure factors like this can affect their bottom line. You'd have to be an Actuary to figure out the cost index. Regarding wartime use of paint and that figure of 500lbs for the B17 amazes me, there was an Australian Pilot based in the UK who would totally disarm his Spitfire, putty and sand all the rivets, shove a couple of cameras in it and then perform high speed, low altitude, photo reconnaissance flights over Germany. The aircraft was faster than the ME/BF 109. I'm not so sure if it would have been faster than a BF 109 that had the same treatment. Jon
  14. I was contemplating. Do modern aircraft paints, impart a positive aerodynamic effect on the hull of say, a 747 and does the extra weight of the paint, cancel out any efficiency advantage? The reason I ask is because there must be a lot of titanium dioxide in those paints and it's heavy stuff. It could be merely an advertising thing but with fuel burn paramount, these days, do airlines consider this? Jon
  15. I have bookmarked the wikipedia page. It has everything. I am surprised that a 767 can land at SION but the shot of that 767 200, I think, landing there has me stunned. I think it's the best livery I've seen for a 767. The actual graphic is its strength and the continuation of the curve on the tailplane in a contrasting colour is pure genius. Reminiscent of a tail feather. Jon What, were you driving the plane? That would be so fantastic. Are you a SIONophile? Jon
  16. That's a very useful chart once you get your head around it. Real world pilots really need to know how to to aircraft stuff. Jon
  17. My main aim is to shoot an ils approach into SION, successfully, under winter conditions with my PMDG NGX. I've never achieved it. So, until I want to face that failure, again, I'm going to perfect my hand flying techniques. I'm always too high on the approach. I've tried slow down and go down but it's as if you need to balance it on its wings, just above stall speed to make the approach. Maybe I'm reading the navigraph charts wrong. Jon
  18. Please explain. I'm not familiar with it. Is it an entry in the FS.cfg file? Jon
  19. No that's cool. Please help me here. I'm determined to get said aircraft full of merry making Scandinavian female skiers to SION, mid-winter. The crew will need to overnight at the nearby chalet but we will need to take enough fuel for a return trip as the fuel dude is on strike. Perhaps an ATR 72 500 would be a better choice. How many Scandinavian female skiers will one of them hold? As you can see. That's how realistic I want my landings to be. Jon
  20. I have just discovered 5 cd's full of mostly fs2004 aircraft and utilities, 99.9% of them are from Avsim pre-library corruption. I have already flagged this post with David, so his is the final decision but here's what I propose: I will post 5 screenshots of the list of zip file names. Now I can get an inkling in what's in the file too and I'm suspecting many FS2004 aficionado's can too. Any of them you recognise, I will upload to the library, provided there is no restriction in the Avsim text message or within the unzipped file itself. I look at many of these files as Avsim history and they should not be lost to time. There's that Classic Beech 18, The astounding VC10 and many more. There will probably be many of them already in the library but there might be something you remember, that isn't. Jon Shearer
  21. Yes, I see what you mean. I would need to set the weather parameters to keep it within the envelope. Maybe it is folly to consider MLW but that's what I failed to mention last post. Possibly, I'm mad but I bet it's going to be fun. Thanks all for your responses. Jon
  22. I recall trying to find the largest aircraft able to land at SION and not being able to find it. Is there purely a rwy length v aircraft type rating in real life? I'm talking min rwy length v say a 737-800. I was sure the airport is required to advertise this. I'm assembling some 'stand it on its nose flights' and want to be able to take each of my aircraft into a minimum rwy length airport. Jon
  23. Yes, well, I got there. It appears it is FSX weather. Looks like FSUIPC for me. Thanks for your responses. I ran the program with clear skies and for 9 hours, the only scenery was a few islands enroute, no cloud anywhere. Talk about boring. Jon Shearer
  24. Thank you so much for verifying that I'm not Robinson Crusoe. The absence of a tower view makes sense so that is not worrying me now but the lnav/vnav failure is disappointing as I have recently installed Active Sky Evolution which I thought would obviate the problem as I have experienced the often reported huge wind shifts experienced by many. I do not have a registered copy of FSUIPC for FSX so I suppose that will be my next purchase as I'll do almost anything to eliminate the problem. Thank you, again for your response. On the subject of flying with no weather: I have done that but I'm going to attempt it again, today. Jon Shearer
  25. I flew Emirates 777-300 from Sydney to Singapore, thence to Dubai, thence to Manchester. 8 Weeks later I flew the reverse. Be under no illusion. The 777-300 is very big, very comfortable and reliable. I'm not familiar with the 200 but surely it can't be that much smaller. Another responder has already mentioned it but rumour has it that if you knock the wings off a 737 you could feed the 737 fuselagé through the 777's engine nacelle. I don't know how true it is but it would not be too far off. Jon Shearer Yup! it brings back good memories. I believe the photo is taken at Dubai and 90% of the pollution you see is smoke from the countless oil wells. Jon Shearer
