  1. I hear you, Brother. For all its faults fsx is still great fun, great visually with great 3rd party support and when it becomes stable, quite a sense of pleasure and accomplishment in completion of the task. What I lament is, much modern hardware has outgrown the code, N1 and N2 memory a case in point and that before we know it, Win 7 has gone by the way, Win 8 has been thrown on the burgeoning 'embarrassment' heap and the new OS just wont run it. Those days are in sight. Even though I've become a bit Feral in my older age, I can't see myself blowing the dust off the old box(?) in the dead of night, in a dim tungsten lit room, to fly planes they had in the olden days. That's why 64 bit deserves support. At least it has a chance to keep up. Jon
  2. I await my copy of XPlane 10 64 bit for a number of reasons. I agree that FSX is a wonderful simulator but, unfortunately it's done. So the other choice is P3D. Rumours are that LM are not geared for 64 bit development for 3 years. XPlane have recognized the future by adopting 64 bit early. Now see the developers come and improve many aspects of the program. 64 Bit is the future and any developer who supports it, deserves my buck. That was the first and most important reason. The second is I've just gotta have the 777 some company has written for it. Worldliner 777. Jon
  3. Thank you very much. I will now go and complete my purchase. Jon
  4. Anyone who is attempting a new flight sim gets my support. To write one that works and satisfies everyone, well...I just hope you're young. Jon
  5. I'm just about to open my wallet (notify the media) and buy XPlane 10 64 bit. XPlane's site seems totally bereft of anything resembling 64 bit, that I can find. They have made little reference to 64 bit and I thought this would have been a major feature of the product on the sales page, Nienté. Can anyone tell me for sure, if the currently shipping software contains the 64 bit code. Jon
  6. That's the sad reality. I thought about that but XPlane 10 64 bit is the way I'll be going. Jon
  7. Thanks for that link. I'm going to be broke. So far, with everything I want I'm up to AUD 3,500.00. Ah well. You get that. Jon
  8. This is very good advice and I heed it. I think I have mentioned before that this new computer will almost need to outlast me, so I'm sorta going the Sandybridge X series 6 core. Expensive, I know but this is about the only thing I spend my entertainment budget on. Carroll Shelby, creator of the AC Cobra and Ford GT40 had a motto : :There is no substitute for, litres". That's why the 6 core. I can't afford to drink, smoke or live. So I may as well have something that will make my pastime more pleasurable. I do agree that in many things we must be cautious and judicious but this time I'm just going to wing it. Jon
  9. Thanks for the heads-up. I'm going to need to ask lots of overclocking questions soon. Not to hijack the thread but does any serious overclock require the lowest possible ram latency? sooo high cost? Jon
  10. You're not Robinson Crusoe but in FSX's defense, when it was released, 64 bit was in its infancy (I recall many 64 bit driver issues). I'm about to build a new computer and will be installing XPlane as they have released their 64 bit version. P3D is rumoured to be going 64 bit but not in the near future so XPlane, as far as I'm concerned, is the way to go. I can't comment on any of your other questions but I'm certain someone here will XPlane them (punny). Jon
  11. Yup! I'm a member of the nutters club. I visited my daughter in the UK a while back (I'm in Australia) flying Emirates 777-300 YSSY-WSSS-OMDB-EGCC and I've re-flown it half a dozen times in the PMDG 747 400. Catching Zzzz's is a bit of a problem and I miss a step climb or two but generally I get there successfully. Even if I'm a bit jet lagged at the end. When PMDG releases their 777, I intend to buy it and do it all over again. I'm just a bit peeved the initial release will be the 200 model. That's not a criticism of PMDG as I love their products, although anticipating its release is tantamount to waiting for the second coming. Jon
  12. There are many reasons why I fly my simulators. Here are a few: Beside me (10 or so feet away), sits a 47"HDTV that has only 'free to air' channels. Unless I want to catch the occasional 20 minutes of news, it doesn't come out of 'mute'. After all, you've seen one cooking program, you've seen 'em all and reality TV? Puhleez! So, the first reason is for something to do that is less mind numbing than watching TV. Another reason is: 40+ years ago I had the dream of attaining my Private Pilot's licence and had some lessons in a Piper Cherokee 140. It was expensive back then and I don't know how anyone affords it these days but I fell in love with the freedom of flight. Anyway, I got distracted by a 22 yo 5' 8" tall, drop dead gorgeous female and married her. The dream was crushed, almost immediately. BTW, I hadn't realized until too late, that beauty fades and by the time she was 40 years old she had turned into a Rottweiler (I laughed when one of the other respondents posted 'To get away from his wife'). Child Support payments put paid to the next 10 years or so but my interest in computers and flying became stronger and my first sim was FS5 (I think) on something like a 386. I digress. These days, this hobby has become a wonderful and at times, rewarding pursuit, especially with the advent of superb add-ons and payware aircraft that emulate the incredible technological advancements in aviation to the present day. Quite often, I derive my pleasure by just marvelling, for hours, at the intricacy and superb modelling and systems of the payware aircraft I have installed on my system. When I do actually fly one of them, it's mostly a tubeliner or something like the ATR 72 500 or the JS4100. Since my first Rover 75 (google it), I've loved having switches to flick and gauges to monitor. I seldom fly anything low and slow because my present system can't handle many of the ORBX sceneries I have but that will change very soon with my next (and probable, final) build. I love all of the aspects of this hobby, the flight planning, the fuel planning, the add-ons, the achievement of performing a flight as flawlessly as I am able and the pleasure of hand-flying a successful landing but when I am at t/c, cruising at FL310, I'm just groovin' on the simulated reality I'm experiencing in my little simulated world. Jon
  13. HI Peter, I've run it in both sims. FS9 shows no errors but FSX has heaps of files reporting errors. Now they're fixed. Great program. Many thanks. Jon
  14. To the OP: I purchased EZDock, purely because I wanted to be able to fly add-on aircraft from the vc only. It is a bit of a learning curve but with the manual, combined with some excellent video tutorials on youtube, I am 'getting it'. what a fantastic program! I will be purchasing v2 whenever it is released. More power to you. IMHO, this is a 'must have' add-on for FSX. FWIW, I'm extremely pleased with v 1.17 (I think) and even though v2 might be made a little more intuitive, the existing offering is pretty darn good if the user takes the time to understand its idiosynchracies. Me? I'll be buying v2, if only to make my small contribution to your success. Jon
  15. Well I'll be buttered...on both sides. It worked! Previously it had not worked as I was running it from the extracted folder within a window. I dragged it out onto the desktop and it worked. Go figure. I did a simulated fix and It's telling me that the only textures that are bad are these (methinks they could be Qantas and British Airways liveries): THE FOLLOWING FILES ARE BAD: F:\SIMS\FS9\Aircraft\PMDG737-800\texture\PMDG_VC_EIGHT_L.bmp F:\SIMS\FS9\Aircraft\PMDG737-800\texture\pmdg_vc_five_t.bmp F:\SIMS\FS9\Aircraft\PMDG737-800\texture.BA\PMDG_VC_EIGHT_L.bmp F:\SIMS\FS9\Aircraft\PMDG737-800\texture.BA\pmdg_vc_five_t.bmp F:\SIMS\FS9\Aircraft\PMDG737-800-Winglets\texture\PMDG_VC_EIGHT_L.bmp F:\SIMS\FS9\Aircraft\PMDG737-800-Winglets\texture\pmdg_vc_five_t.bmp F:\SIMS\FS9\Aircraft\PMDG737-800-Winglets\texture.ABL\PMDG_VC_EIGHT_L.bmp F:\SIMS\FS9\Aircraft\PMDG737-800-Winglets\texture.ABL\pmdg_vc_five_t.bmp F:\SIMS\FS9\Aircraft\PMDG737-800-Winglets\texture.QFL\PMDG_VC_EIGHT_L.bmp F:\SIMS\FS9\Aircraft\PMDG737-800-Winglets\texture.QFL\pmdg_vc_five_t.bmp F:\SIMS\FS9\Aircraft\PMDG737-900\texture\PMDG_VC_EIGHT_L.bmp F:\SIMS\FS9\Aircraft\PMDG737-900\texture\pmdg_vc_five_t.bmp I ran the program which fixed those files and took the Qantas 737 800 for a short flight. Switching into the vc is considerably faster than previously. Thanks for your help. Jon
  16. Sorry about that. I'm referring to dxt3fixer.zip. I am running win 7 64 bit so that could be the problem. I've run it from my C: Drive and have tried running it on the installation drive with the same negative result. It's annoying because I have a need for speed. Jon
  17. Hello Everyone, I've recently returned to flight simming after a 12 month sabbatical and like most people, I have had oom's and god knows what with fsx. I never knock it, though I get frustrated flying the big iron without weather and other high end add-ons. I was so pleased to find that fs2004 still has its aficionados, one of which I count myself to be. I was hoping to enter this section of the forum and find some stickies with advice on how to optimize the fs9.cfg file but that seems to have gone, so I have a request: If I post (cut and paste) my fs9.cfg file, here, would you be able to point out some areas I could change for the better? The old memory is beginning to suffer a little with the advancement of age and I just can't remember all the good tweaks. I won't post the file in this post, I'll wait for clearance first. Jon
  18. Hi Everyone, I registered and downloaded the program and it starts well but fails to respond when I point it at the fs9 root folder. I've actually downloaded the program twice to make certain it was not corrupt the first time. My set-up is with fs9 running from my C: Drive but installed on a separate drive. Bummer, I really want to do this. Jon
  19. I could spend hours in there. Thanks for the link. Jon
  20. Anyone using wide-fs?. Jon
  21. OR, pre-purchase. I'v got money burning a hole in my pocket and I'm a spendthrift. Any chance of a deal where the people who pre-order get preferential download? Jon Shearer
  22. I'm in the initial throes of a system build. mainly to prepare for XP 10 64 bit, thus I will have an older but very capable existing system which will be redundant with advent of the coming build. I know little about WIDEFS from Pete Dowson so my question is to the users of that program. How much difference does it make having the weather on another system and does it have a positive effect on frame rates within the sim, itself? Any other advantages you can think of? Jon
  23. Geez! The flight crew only get 1 CRT display each. You don't get much for a couple of billion these days. Call it 'way too much time in FS' but I caught myself mousing over the controls to find the 'click spots'. Sort of, 'I wonder what will happen if I press THIS'. Probably ww3. Great pic. Jon
  24. ANALOT of the airlines are not too happy with their LOT. Jon
