  1. No it's gone. Thanks anyway.Jon
  2. Here it is. Link I'm sorry but the link is having trouble working. I suggest you go to the appropriate 'Compatibility' page at Microsoft. Make sure you explore the 64bit tab as it opens with the 32 bit tab.Jon
  3. I have had and used FSX and win 7 64 bit for some years now, and have purchased quite a few scenery add-ons and aircraft at considerable collective cost. I contracted a virus which corrupted quite a few files and needed to re-install FSX. Easy, I hear you cry but, no. The ubiquitous 'Validation' page appeared but would not allow me to proceed. I contacted Microsoft, to be informed that they no longer validate FSX for 64 bit installations. There are a number of very annoying aspects to this:1) I have never had any problems, issues...whatever with FSX on my platform. It has run flawlessly. I cannot recall any installation problems with any 3rd party add-ons. No assurances, from me could extract a validation key from Microsoft.2) The only unsupported program is FSX Deluxe which I purchased Retail in a 'Gold' edition which also contained Acceleration on a separate disc. To install Acceleration (which is still validated by M$) one first has to validate FSX Deluxe. Catch 22.3) I only purchased Win 7 64 bit on the advice of M$ as they stated to me, that all multi-cored cpu's (Q9650 Extreme) should run 64 bit OS's and definitely not, 32 bit.I'm a little peeved. I could, of course, go down the road of locating a copy of FSX which does not require validation but that is against my philosophy and ethics and is not an option. So, I'm now faced with the purchase of Win 7 32 bit and another hdd, so I can run software that I have purchased legitimately. I intend to take this further with a complaint to the appropriate Ombudsman, here in Australia but do not hold any hope of a good outcome. I point out, that I would contact M$ with this whinge, beforehand but I am finding it almost impossible to locate an email address to send it to.Anyway Folks, Caveat Emptor and no, I'm not generally an M$ knocker.Jon Shearer
  4. I have run fsx for years on my win7 64bit os without any issues or problems. Same os, same hdd, same hardware and when I go to activate...error. After spending 2 hours and being transferred to 5 different extensions, Microsoft will not activate the product because of compatibility issues. When explained that it had been activated previously on this os, I got the telephone equivalent of the 10000 yard stare. Acceleration, is compatible but not FSX Deluxe. When I explained that I purchased the 'Gold' edition of the product which came as Deluxe with the separate Acceleration disk and that to install Acceleration it requires that FSX Deluxe copy to be validated. Still the 1000 yard stare. Has anyone else experienced this inflexibility on MS's part? BTW. if anyone else has fsx installed on a 64bit system, Microsoft just wants you to know it doesn't wotk.Jon
  5. I'm coming back into fsx after a break. The Config Manager seems to be stuck on 8i and 8f and will not reflect any changes after saving and re-opening. Animation is being investigated but so far no joy. No animations. Is this sounding like a total re-install?Jon
  6. How much better are the 200 series drivers over the later 100 series drivers? Is it a 'marked' difference or merely a tweaked set of code from the 197.45 drivers? (I think that's the one I replaced.) As far as I can recall, before I upgraded the GPU from a 9800GT+ to my current GTX460, I never had an issue. The 258.96 drivers are performing well in XP Pro but not so well in my Win7 64bit installation. This is a 'bummer'.Jon
  7. Cripes! You go away for a while and everything changes. Big time. I found out nHancer had a problem in Win7 64 bit. Strangely, it appears to be working ok in my XP Pro installation. At least, I think it is. I'm about to check all of that out. I'm working through the post from Ryan Maziarz, for my Win7 installation. It's the one I really want to get cranking although I'm not expecting miracles with this older system. Thank you everyone for your valuable responses.Jon
  8. Thank you. I appreciate your responses. Now to reconfigure my new GTX 460 which has, so far, been quite impressive. If I can just get better detail out of REX 2 and the ORBX stuff, I'll be over the moon.Jon
  9. I'm wading back into FSX after a prolonged absence and I'm looking for a file or a link to a document I downloaded previously but can't locate. I'm hoping someone might be able to help. The document was about recommended settings for nHancer and FSX. Anyone? Please?Jon
  10. Well, my advice is to fly the Duke, more often. I get where you're coming from though. I just see it from my own perspective, where I'm so impressed with the Duke, that, since I've owned it (6 weeks). Everything else has been mothballed. I've got a brand new JS4100 I have not even started (bought at the same time). Nup! I'm impressed. My misgivings about starting this thread were to do with any suggestion that either's product lacked anything. Diametrically opposite to my intention. I was just thinking, that, all of the expertise is rich and capable. I'm just trying to urge some rapport between people in a fascinating industry, where expertise, is too widely sewn. Personnel are a huge expense but a massive lever to getting things done. The way I see it: If there was a forward thinking entity that would take up this philosophy, Simmers might get higher quality products, more often...and I'm not complaining about the products I already own.I guess I'm just encouraging pushing the edge of the envelope.Jon
  11. Because I'd only have to do it once. $300 in Australia, would get you, oh I dunno. 2 hours? This way, I'd have it until the cd separated. A while. It'd need to be the 'ducks guts' add-on though.Jon
  12. Oh, I don't doubt what you say is right. I was more or less looking at it as a 'scenario'. It would have to be an amicable joint effort, bearing the Hallmarks' of both companies , affixing their stamp on a high premium product, sought after by enthusiastic and eager to purchase, flight simmers. I'd spend $150+ for something like that. The offerings of both are second to none. I just don't see any reason for it not to happen. Ok, fly both and get back to me.I have many different, payware aircraft, scenery is all ORBX (astounding) with REX 2. I just wish their talents could combine to present an aircraft, where even the dunnies, 'flush'. I know. I can dream. Now that Ive considered it some more, $300.00, I'd pay, for something, 'the Pinnacle' of the Flight Simmers art. It would need heaps of pesonnel. Thus, the joint venture, idea. Surely they don't all hate each other :( PMDG have done a great job with a very boring panel in the 747. Baby Poo Brown. That's as exciting as it gets. BOEING!! Please, some different colours? But get a close-up of the B60 panel. It's a different ballgame. Kind to frame rates, too.Jon
  13. I truly love all my PMDG Fleet (growing). I also adore, my RealAir B60 Duke. Not said to belittle any previous efforts but could there be a God, so good, as to encourage verbal intercourse between these two parties with a view to a "Joint Project". The obvious expertise of these two organisations, combined, could produce something pretty well unbelievable. I can't see why this isn't the 'norm' in the industry, actually. Co-Operation and sub-contracting.To any of the PMDG Personnel, reading this: I've had a close look at the amazing design of the 8i Wing. Could it be possible, you're going to surprise us with a free 'performance profile', when Boeing publishes it? :( :( Those engines look 'bigger', to me. Suck in more air. I'll bet it's got a higher cruise. Its interesting what Boeing is doing, actually. The actual fuselage of the 747 is a work of art and efficiency and longevity. They also must know that particular area like the back of their hand, by now. In all its possible modes. viz: 747SP. So, basically, they've perfected the design of the wing and engine package. I doubt it will be much faster. It'll just cruise higher with a boost to fuel economy, probably at the same speed, at the higher altitude. Love the rear 'faring' at the rear of the engines.Jon
  14. With reference to the Thread Title: In my experience, Everything.Jon
  15. Y'know? I think you've hit the nail on the head. I've suspected this since installing YBBN. Just a little subconcious niggle but you spoke its name.Jon
  16. Oh, I don't think he's bashing them. I often post on the FTX ORBX forums. The people there are completely open to...well, observations of their product. All this is done without any criticism of their stunning effort to produce a detailed visualisation of YBBN. It's just that we bought it and would like to run it. There is a number of hot topics, at present, about switching off certain aspects of YBBN, to make it reasonably usable.Jon
  17. ...yes, there is that aspect but it's far more. The degree of interactivity, the planning, the learning to actually 'fly' a virtual aircraft correctly. Ok, so it's pretend but as a 2 dimensional representation of a 3 dimensional world? I reckon its doing ok.Jon
  18. That's not a problem. What an interesting link. Thanks for that. I understand the complete concept of this and now my devious old brain see's no reason why 2 of the subject drives could not be RAID 0'd. Not necessarily for FSX but just as a really quick and inexpensive RAID solution. I mean, crikey! They're only AU$ 139.00. I'm now seriously considering this. Thank you.Jon
  19. It's ok. I reinstalled and it no longer asks.Jon Shearer
  20. I don't understand why but my absolutely, verifiably, legitimately purchased PMDG JS4100 has begun asking for online verification each time I try to use the aircraft. I enter the licence number and am told it's unlicensed and will not perform as expected. Any clue's, guys? Just as a matter of interest, MS automatic updates were installed yesterday to my Win 7 64bit os. This morning is the first time I've attempted to open the aircraft.Jon Shearer
  21. Thanks for your replies. A very interesting link. I gotta rethink this whole shebang.

    WD Raptors

I gave myself a terrible fright! I wandered around to different sites to price SSD Drives. Having given up on that idea very quickly I have decided to get a brace of 300gig velociraptors from Western Digital to RAID 0 for my dedicated installation of FSX and Win 7 64bit. My curiosity moves me to inquire as to why only WD manufacture a 10,000rpm drive? Is their r&d dept. superior to other manufacturers as everyone else has failed to move into this area. It just seems a little strange, with the fierce competition in this sector of the market. Also, these drives seem to have, for years, maintained a very healthy price point. Anyone have a clue?Jon
  23. mmmmmmm.......NGX. It'll look great next to all the other aircraft in my PMDG fleet.Jon
  24. Well, I drink beer or bourbon, fix a couple of other peoples' computers while listening to 'shuffled renditions from my huge collection of Robert Zimmerman music. If it's a 'long haul', by the time I reach my destination the landing is pretty generally, woeful. :-)Jon Shearer
