  1. Again you mention this survey. A survey made on this site, which has, is and probably will be heavily FSX centric for a long time to come. It's like asking who likes coca cola amongst the workers in a Pepsi factory.

Anyway, I enjoy, indeed love X-plane, I welcome PMDG's move into it and for now I bid farewell to this post and returning to the silky smooth, immersive environment that is my platform of choice.

  2. Mine would have been mid 80's Dan Air BAC 111 from Gatwick to Ibiza. On the return journey Gatwick was fog bound so many planes diverted to Bournemouth and were bused back to Gatwick. Whilst the big airline passengers got new modern buses, us Dan Air reprobates where given a throwback to the 1950's which presumably was not road worthy as we only went on the back roads. A 2 hour journey took 5, 3 longer than the flight

You say the development in X-Plane attracts you to invest.  The problem with X-Plane is it is changing and developing all the time. So your investment in something for XP10 might be incompatible with XP11. I prefer the stability of FSX which has allowed developers to do what they do best without having to second guess how the simulation engine is going to develop.

This is another of those often quoted comments about X-Plane. Yes it is in constant development, is that a bad thing? No, and this fact is backed up by the increasing number of increasing complex aircraft available for X-Plane, the developers of which openly embrace the constant update cycle. Do aircraft break during updates? Yes but very rarely. Is this a major problem? Judging by the quality of aircraft available and under development, no.

There are many extraordinary aircraft now available for X-Plane, some of which are coming very close to PMDG standards and actually exceed the standards of many other FSX developers. The feel of these aircraft, in particular the virtual cockpits is, in my very humble opinion, significantly better than FSX. Combined, with X-Plane's excellent cockpit view presets, navigating around the virtual cockpits is a joy, something that cannot be said for FSX even with Ezca given the time it takes to set up. That to me is important, because this is a flight simulator, and when flying I tend to spend my time in the cockpit.

  4. There is often the argument that many FSX users will move to X-Plane 10 once PMDG release for it, however what a lot of FSX user may not realize is PMDG may be late to the party. There is a company called IXEG producing what may just be the most complex study level airliner made on any home platform.

    http://www.ixeg.net

2014 may well be the year when people start asking when will IXEG develop for FSX, not PMDG for X-Plane.

I think many fail to realize how important 64 bit is. If it is not important why are so many P3D users asking when their platform will go 64 bit. There is no doubt that the ingenuity of FSX developers has breathed life in to the product, but there is only so far that you can go, you can't put a quart in a pint cup, 64 bit opens up a virtually limitless world of possibilities now and way into the future

Since the release of X-Plane 10.25, the move to X-Plane from FSX has accelerated by some amount. A quick look through the X-Plane forums will reveal that. I have no beef with FSX, I have used the FS platform since the Bruce Artwick days, but Microsoft's decision to "let it go" was a major nail in the coffin. Yes P3D is a good replacement, but as has been said Lockheed is a defense company not an entertainment company. What better way to beta test their new commercial level simulator than to offer a license to it to anyone (for educational purposes of course)

X-Plane is not perfect, but it is being developed, third party products such as Skymaxx Pro are rapidly changing the feel of the sim, aircraft such as the FF757 and the Saab 340, are coming very close to PMDG levels and sometime this year IXEG may surpass it. If you tried the X-Plane demo a year ago, forget your misconceptions of it from then and download the current 10.25 demo. Use, it, play with the less than stella interface, get use to the lack of usable ATC, live with it's other foibles and most of all don't delete it. If at first it doesn't float your boat, come back to it. Slowly and surely it will start to play with your emotions, tearing a rift between you and FSX. Then one day, as you fly into your local field at sunset, the lights of the cars and trucks spilling onto the highways below you, your landing lights slowly revealing the runway beneath you and the last rays of sunshine gently casting shadows across your instruments, you will finally say, "yes, I get it"

  5. Very nice screenshots.

One question, however, since I haven't been involved at all with XP10, what are the letters and arrows in the lower left of the screenshots?

I've seen this before in other shots, and am curious as to what they are for.

    Thanks.

They are short icons for an aircraft, Carenado I believe. Allows you to change cockpit views, open close doors etc

  6. AtomicFrawg has posted this on the chat board at the org. The person aerosoft bought the rights from, lifted the shaders from X-Plane 10 and was told he could use them as long as he did not sell the product. He has now sold the rights to aerosoft and made money on other peoples work (which the guy "Borrowed").

Not sure if this is true but if it is, then it's disappointing both that someone would do this and that Aerosoft did not check it.

  7. Just a thought, but with so many newcomers and potential newcomers, maybe we should start a comprehensive FAQ thread. It could details how to tweak the graphics, how to add scenery and aircraft. It can help direct people to stuff like Andras's HD Mesh and the SimHeaven downloads. In short a well written comprehensive guide to getting the best from X-Plane.

I am willing to help, although cannot write the whole thing, do other people think this would be a good idea?

  8. Just to pull this a little more back on topic, I should state that I have never had any major problems with .org, in fact the org store has been fantastically helpful and I have made several hundred dollars worth of purchases their. I know a little of the animosity between developers and sites but as per my original post, my issue was the behaviour of one of the mods, in relation to a question about X-Plane itself. The question related to whether the movie controls can be removed from screen, a fair, and valid question I think. The reply, from one of the senior mods was "Crop out the bar and get over it.  Pretty simple…"

Now this was seemingly to a newcomer to .org who believed that .org was the official X-Plane forums. Its a good question that does not relate to any third party products on .org or other, nor does it promote talk about or in any other way discuss third party development. It is this sort of answer that has no place in any forum especially from a senior mod, it scares away potential x-plane converts who have genuine valid questions about the simulator.

Now I understand the need to protect your business, by not allowing promotion of other site's products, that seems fair and rational, however, if these are the terms of your website, then why would you have a General X-Plane Forum. I seems to me that there is a major conflict of interest, especially when the General forum is regarded to be the "to go" place for X-Plane users. In my opinion, you are either a community that supports X-Plane, or a business that provides products for X-Plane. I don't think there can be a happy medium between the two.

This is, in my opinion, why the Avsim forum is thriving, there is no direct conflict of interest and therefore there can be a productive, sometimes heated but generally amicable discussion between developers, users and potential users.

  9. In the past year or so, the X-Plane forum here has become a much livelier much better place to be than certain other forums. There are arguments, there are people that step over the mark but that is just passion, elsewhere, the passion has become arrogance and unfortunately it's that arrogance that many first timers to X-Plane stumble upon. Let's be honest, if you have a problem with X-Plane, your first choice of words in a Google Search will almost certainly bring you to the .org.

The more that we can post, ask and answer questions here, the more AVSIM will feature in Google searches and the more likely newcomers will bypass the other site.

  10. This is the problem though, very often people who do try to smooth things over and calm it down at ,org get banned. For a top level mod to say "get over it" to an innocent and relevant question is disgusting. We, as an X-Plane community are trying to attract new users and there has never been a better time than now to do this.

Another classic example is their refusal to allow discussion of products outside of .org itself. With them being perceived as the official arm of x-plane.com newcomers are missing out on fantastic products such as the LES Saab and of course John Spahns fantastic SkyMaxx Pro.

    Its a real shame.

  11. I hope they fix this because its a major issue for some people. I wonder if there is some sort of work around, there must be something in the start up that checks the cards compatibility, if this can be disabled we might be able to use our "lowly" second cards for prosim or in my case flightsim commander

  12. I really wish there was someway of getting the word out that x-plane.org is not the official forums of X-Plane. Was just reading this thread and was disgusted by the snarky comment from one of the well known mods. The two X-Plane newbies who post beneath are both suprised and upset by the comments and seem to believe that the forum is x-plane official. Real shame, as this sort of attitude is what is losing X-Plane and ironically the .org business.

Hope I am not breaking any rules with this, please delete if I have

  13. Are you running from more than one grafix card? P3D will not start even if the main card is DX11 compatible Try disabling the second screen from the display options. Use only the DX11 card. Its annoying, I don't want to use P3D on the second display but would like to have it available for other things
