  1. This de lidding business is really quite interesting, however, for some real modifications, take a look here! This is awesome! http://forums.bit-te...ad.php?t=160324 This de lidding business is really quite interesting, however, for some real modifications, take a look here! This is awesome! http://forums.bit-te...ad.php?t=160324 My FSX used to run like it was in oil - No not smooth and friction free - rather more like it was in a bucket of axle grease.
  2. Makes me wonder where we are going to be in 25 years time! I was thinking back (after reading some of the posts on here about PC kit) to 25 years ago when I had my first experience with flight simulation. It was a BBC B Micro, plugged into a portable black and white TV - I believe it had 16K memory. I had been given a flight simulator software for my birthday - it was Spitfire or similar. The program was loaded via cassette tape onto the BBC, the graphics consisted of a black screen with a 2d wite outline of a cloud, there was a cross hair as a site guide and once you had been flying for about 10 minutes you came upon what could only be described as a giant "blob" consisting of a white outline of something that was supposed to be an alien! I remember thinking at the time how awesome this was and really cutting edge! Anyone remember this lot? It was called AVIATOR! http://www.google.com/imgres?hl=en&sa=X&biw=1920&bih=1047&tbm=isch&prmd=imvnsb&tbnid=henl-bJ1qyx4SM:&imgrefurl=http://www.computinghistory.org.uk/cgi/archive.pl%3Ftype%3DGames%26platform%3DBBC%2520Micro&docid=EgHSHt6LOzskrM&itg=1&imgurl=http://www.computinghistory.org.uk/userdata/images/medium/PRODTHM-21325.jpg&w=152&h=200&ei=GVNYUJf2L4LqrAfYg4DYBQ&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=271&sig=113523830444680994995&page=1&tbnh=160&tbnw=121&start=0&ndsp=46&ved=1t:429,r:20,s:0,i:140&tx=25&ty=59
  3. Mine is currently on its way by post to me as I type this! P8Z77 V Deluxe, with Corei7 3770K - busy upgrading from ASUS P7P55D Core i5 -750. It is definately worth spending a bit more for the higher spec motherboard - I had a problem with a RAM socket on my P7D and used a P7P55 LX for 2 weeks while it was being repaired. Both ASUS, both very similar boards but the LX could not get off the ground even with minimal overclock - spend the extra on the Deluxe or Pro it is money well spent.
  4. The first thing I would do is get FSX onto its own drive, no need to go for SSD or anything, just a reasonable sized drive separate from your O.S - Any SATA will be fine, SATA 3 or 6, 7200 RPM is the standard these days 5400 is a bit slow but I doubt you would see a problem once you get FSX onto its own dedicated drive.
  5. Jeff, the 3770K will reach 4.5K virtually on its own if you are using a decent M/B like an ASUS P8Z77 - mid range or higher - just use ASUS suite and let it do the work for you. The main thing you already have taken care of and that is the cooler for the CPU - The 3370K does run a bit hot compared to say Core i5 - 750, but Intel have also raised the tJMax to over 100C - not that you want to be that hot anyway. I am sure you will hit over 4.5GHz without any trouble at all. One thing to remember with the 3770K is that the "usual" overclocking methods do not always apply here, especially when using a good M/B. Normally, O/C requires you to disable things like "Speedstep" and other BIOS based speed enhancers, the 3770K does not need this, it will use ASUS suite and BIOS to maximise the speed without any need for interference from you should you decide that is the way you want to go. Give it a try by enabling all of the automated stuff in your BIOS, then load up ASUS suite or similar and play around there and see what you get! Good luck.
  6. Thanks Joe! That is probably the best answer I could have hoped for!
  7. I have read numerous posts and advice about scenery files and file order, however, I still have not read one that details the way to lay out FSX scenery files in a consistent order. I was lead to believe (rightly or wrongly) that AFD files need to be at the very top of the list in the scenery folder - here is where my confusion begins. In my scenery settings I have 3 different AFD files - The first and top of my scenery list is Aerosoft AFD, this is then followed by about 30 listings for various airport add ons - Mega scenery, German Airports etc. until I get down to position 32 where I have another file called "afd" (small case) directly below that, in position 33 I have another file "AFD" in upper case. I really have no idea what they are or if they should be where they are! Following these I have another load of airports and land class and mesh files, all in no particular order other than arranged using a small utility that orders the scenery into some sort of structure (using the scenery config file) This continues down to listing 105, where I believe the standard FSX files begin, Edwards AFB .... Longleat etc. Is there any particular order I need to place the scenery into? Photreal? where should that be? I know some of my scenery files need Land Class and various files in a certain order and I have tried as best to do this, however, this does not give the entire picture as these are simply recommended groups for one product rather than for the entire scenery. Eg. My Switzerland X requires the scenery for Switzerland X to be in the following descending order; 85: CHPROX LANDMARKS 86: CHPROX_Apts 87: CHPROX_Scen 88: CHPROX_APTS_Elev What I don't understand is where this group should fit in with relation to other scenery files, i.e. should it be above or below Mega Scenery Las Vegas, should it be above or below photo real? Does it really matter? I know it matters a great deal with some scenery, as depending upon the file order there can be missing runways, floating runways, roads going through airfields etc. Do any of you knowledgeable people have a straight forward step by step ordering structure that will be failsafe for scenery? The last point is whenever you add a new scenery file, it seems it is simply stuck on at the top of the list, which sort of blows the AFD file order out of the window unless you actively go in and reorder. Thanks
  8. I am just in the process of upgrading my current system (Asus p7p55 D-le / 8GB DDR3 1600MHz, Core i5 - 750) to the following setup. Asus P8Z77 DE-luxe, 16 GB DDR3 x 1600 Mhz, Intel Core i7 - 3770K. I run Win 7 x 64 Ultimate and will continue to do so if possible. My question is - will it be possible to disconnect everything and just have the original c: Drive connected to the new components and upgrade all my hardware without having to do a fresh install of Win 7 or FSX? FSX is on a separate drive, which I will reconnect if all goes well upgrading chipset etc. (My FSX is over 200GB and I am not even sure I could find all of the original software add ons.) I recall upgrading from an Intel D101GC with P4 running Win 7 to my current set up without the need to reinstall Win 7. My theory is that if all that is connected at boot up is the drive with the O.S then it may just work by installing all of the new Motherboard drivers. Once this is done, I can piece by piece reconnect the additional hard drives and graphics cards. I wonder if anyone has done similar? If I disconnect everything then boot into my current set up, uninstall all related drivers for this motherboard and addons, shut down, then replace new MB and RAM/Processor, then reboot and load up new drivers. Anyone see a problem thanks?
  9. it is really if you were to be totally honest with yourself! - He sounds like he has a PMDG 747 stuck up his butt! - Come on, be fair! (I'll say one thing here - at least you lot seem to have a sense of humour - I made a joke about Chris and his irritating speech impediment on another SIM forum and it was as if I had smighted the Lord himself - come on - be honest - who can sit through almost 3 hours of Chris whining on like buzzing fly? - I don't dispute his knowledge, and the DVDs are really useful, but the bloke rubs you up like sandpaper! Why on earth did he not pay for that lovely girl that does the SKYPE Soundtest to host the DVD - she makes me dream..........................That asides, a question for the more knowlegeable.I posted earlier about limiting the add ons to one or so trusted vendors, and I truly stand by this - Tampa add ons completely ruined my Autogen.I have however found that UK Scenery add ons seem pretty good. they alter nothing just add to the effects. The question is - UK Scenery seem to have some tie in with Horizon - I currently use UK2000 -VFR Scenery Vol. 1,2,3 I also use a few of their Xtreme airports (not loaded twice) I also use Dreamscapes Pro Mesh Uk,. and a load of VFR UK Scenery add on airfields. The question being, I am considering buying the 9GB add on for S.E England from Just Flight. Would I need to uninstall anything or will JF just re write everything? You see in the past I have had a few niggles about JF - basically none of their products work first time if you have anything other than basic FSX installed.Call me a fool, or whatever, but I love FSX, I keep getting bitten though by these software dogs that sell incompatible rubbish! Please read this post in a Dalek like voice imagining you had a PMDG AOA Aircraft wedged where the sun doesn't shine - The guy has a pretty poor sense of humour too...I'd hate to be his kids - or his wife!
  10. You have never heard anything "odd" about it?The guy sounds like he is from outer space! - Don't tell me that you "laughed" at his "jokes" too did you? I have had sick animals put to sleep that sounded better than poor Chris, he really needs to get a voice double as after about 2 minutes listening to his nasal whining, you just want to chuck!
  11. Que?What I posted was my own personal experience with FSX - I have used varios tweaks ans supposed FPS boosters, but the best rates I ever had was with a fresh install, minimum add ons, and all add ons from one company - I can now turn every slider up to max bar water effects
  12. I bought AOA too...I wish there was some way of changing that guy's voice who did the voice over - he sounds like some sort of automaton castrated Dearth Vader....boy is he an irritating piece of work. Do you think he is real or is it some sort of Text To Speech recognition? No one really speaks like that, or has such a less subtle sense of humour...is he a Cyborg?I can just imagine this "Stephen Hawking" creature flipping his little paddles to adjust flaps whilst barely managing to keep alive.....sad ,sad, sad...maybe his mother loves him!
  13. Personally, I don't think you need to get more than about 3.5GHz out of a multicore processor to achieve really great graphics and pretty good frame rates in FSX.My experience in the past few years of using FSX Acceleration is that you need to stick with a good manufacturer of add ons and keep your FSX to some sort of stable base.As an example -I have tried all of these "tweaks" posted by the supposed Guru Nick N and many others - you end up robbing Peter to pay Paul somewhere down the line. I had installed loads of great add ons, all were great for a while until you add another add on from some other manufacturer that sends everything to rubbish. What I did, and was actually amazed at the results was to do a completely fresh install of FSX - Acceleration, I then limited myself to only using Aerosoft products, you would not believe the difference! I also use an external FPS limiter, at 25FPS, which is clear and smooth. One of the things I found was using addons from Fly Tampa - they completely screwed with the Autogen files and ruined all of my Aerosoft add ons - BACK UP YOUR AUTOGEN.CFG file before touching Fly Tampa!Vancouver X and Alaska X also did some strange things, they really hammered my frame rates - DITCH Them!Try and stick with one manufacturer of add ons, you will be amazed at the difference, and don't believe all this tripe about twaeks and config changes.FSX has never been as good as when installed by itself and run with Aerosoft products exclusively - I am not sure who manufactures Switzerland Pro or Hawaii X, but both of these run great, the only ones I found that really made a mess of things were Fly Tampa!I am running UK 200o scenery - airfields, VFR with no problems, Aerosoft VFR Germany 1,2,3,4 - Czech Republic, FS Dreamscapes Mesh (5M) and it all runs as smooth as silk - stick a few airports from "Fly Tampa" and notice your Autogen file has been altered? Fly Tampa - looks great - go back to your Aerosoft stuff and it is almost like FSX default desert scenery!
