  1. I haven't noticed this and I did try and push things a bit a EKCH with lots of detail/cloud - VAS was fine. That said, your comment about not being convinced about ASCA is correct and unfortunately what I am experiencing - the textures just simply aren't as good as REX's and unlikely to be once Skyforce comes out. Overcast is fine but that's mainly a mass of one texture or the same textures - it's the individual clouds which look strange and I can't quite decide what it is about them either - I put soft clouds back in and it was better again. Maybe there will be some updates. AS16 is a great weather program, ASCA textures are not quite there yet. I really hope that 3rd party (REX) textures can be dynamically injected or I'll be a bit pretty disappointed about ASCA to be honest.
  2. Very limited testing so far but I'm coming from ASN and Rex Soft Clouds. Using AS16 and ASCA for the first time I did see a difference in the way the clouds looked. Fluffy white clouds (IMHO) looked a bit cartoony with ASCA compared to Rex Soft Clouds. That said, full overcast was finally full overcast which I struggled to get with Rex - I think this was because the correct texture set was being loaded dynamically so you end up with a better depiction. Loading up the exact weather for where I am now produced ok results - I'm not sure we'll ever get the looking out of the window and seeing the same in sim effect. The cumulonimbus clouds around here right now were depicted but again, against the blue sky did look a bit cartoony compared to the REX Soft Clouds. They did tower up massively though which I haven't seen before. If Rex Skyforce can dynamically load in with AS16 I have a feeling that could be an ideal combo. These are just my initial thoughts and only in a couple of locations. Overcast is good, fluffy clouds not so much in my opinion (compared to Rex). Love the dynamic loading though. James
  3. Hi all, I have posted a similar topic on Orbx's forum but so far I have received no response or comments. I have been holding off installing Vector into my P3D v3 installation as it had a huge impact previously on VAS usage in my previous 2.x installations - so much so that I think it was a major cause of the OOM's I was having. Right now I have FTX Global and Open LC packages installed along with a couple of the full fat regions (Aus, PNW and PFJ) and I have a lot of VAS headroom. In certain areas I really do enjoy the extra detail Vector provides however so I'm a bit torn at the moment. Has anyone seen any real impact on VAS in v3 with Vector installed? If so, do you have any recommendations on settings in the configuration tool (main roads/secondary roads etc) that you have found have helped? Incidentally I watched a YouTube video from Rob earlier and noticed in a comment he said he didn't have Vector installed yet and may wait until v3.1...and not to read to much into that. Any experiences from users already would be greatly welcomed. Happy to sit tight with the sim performing as it is - Vector does add a lot though! James
  4. I'm really in 2 minds as to whether to go for this. I had MyTraffic 2013 in FSX and P3D v1.4 and my experience was pretty mixed. Performance was definitely an issue and I found it hard to remove. I tried UT2 in P3D up to 2.3 - it wasn't bad but again performance and stability were an issue for me. There are a couple of weeks left on the offer price so I'll keep an eye on this forum and see what people are experiencing - I have a pretty clean install of P3D 2.5 right now and traffic is one thing I'm missing. Does MT6 install inside or outside of P3D out of interest (like UT2)?
  5. Hi Nelson, Thanks for that - I did actually uninstall everything relating to P3D before installing 2.5 and then installed PrecpitiFX back in fresh too - I will perhaps try again. My settings are in the right area for it to work. Perhaps the developers could advise if we should wait for an updated installer or manually change any .cfg's? Thanks
  6. Hi there, I would like to know this as well as I cannot see the effects working in 2.5 having installed PrecipitFX into it. Someone on the P3D forums mentioned adding some lines to aircraft.cfgs but they were taken from an FSX installation (which I don't have - just P3D). Keen to get it working in P3D 2.5 as it look awesome in 2.5. James
  7. Thank you both - Andras, I look forward to the new mesh arrival. JH71 - you comment on OSM data being key I think is the main reason I'm seeing odd placement of autogen although this was over London which I'm told has very good OSM data - I've installed Simheaven photoscenery for London and I think it looks a bit better now but will play around a bit. Will also install the Iceland mesh properly...good learning experience this! Thanks for all your help
  8. Thanks for that. Can you recommend any orthoscenery for Europe coverage? Will that really solve autogen placement? From what I understand I have Iceland satellite scenery and Europe osm but it doesn't produce any buildings...but I know Iceland is a bit random so prepared to accept it may be unique (I just happen to like flying there)
  9. Thanks - I've pretty much done that I think haven't I? Bar the Iceland scenery (which I originally had below OSM with same result)
  10. Hi there, I'm just settling into using X Plane 10 and finding my feet somewhat. I was recommended to check out the Simheaven OSM scenery - it looks really excellent but so far I'm finding issues with autogen placement. As a newbie to X Plane I realise I am probably doing something basic wrong so as a starting point I've attached a few pics which show autogen placed oddly on the underlying textures (just outside EGLL in London) whilst some textures/buildings don't appear at all. I've pasted my scenerypack.ini below which I have ordered as per the instructions. I have also taken out UrbanMaxx to see if it makes a difference too. You'll notice I have Iceland HD mesh/scenery installed too - this is a great example of where Reykjavik (the capital) has almost zero buildings - trees seem ok but building autogen is almost non-existent. I have moved this around in the .ini file a bit to see if it makes a difference and it doesn't - I had it at the bottom originally. Any ideas anyone? Just keen to try and get some semblance of underlying textures and autogen lining up roughly - it's jarringly wrong at the moment! 11. Hi all, My names is James and I am the author of this petition. There was no intention for it to be anonymous, it doesn't show the author's name for some reason in the post page. For those concerned about how it has been written, I take your points on board and would be happy to receive any suggestions from you. Feel free to message me or point me in the direction of someone who may wish to provide an edit of the text. For those concerned about donations, these appear at random it seems and can be totally ignored. I believe it is the ipetitions site asking for donations but you can cancel out. It certainly isn't me! For those making comments about how pointless it all is, that's fine too. I am a flight sim enthusiast along with the rest of you. I'm passionate and keen for our hobby to have a future and I thought this may be a good way for people to show that there is a demand for an updated sim. Whether Microsoft or LM take notice (and I'm fully aware that it is a long shot) time will tell. I happen to think that LM do care about the FS community as a whole. In their interactions through their forums, and in response to requests for features/feedback, they have shown that they are willing to listen to suggestions and ideas from anyone who gets in touch. It was my hope, however misguided it may be, that this may give the petition a chance of being looked at and considered. If that is a mistake, as many of you on here seem to believe, then it is an innocent one by me. I am a user of FSX, P3D and X-Plane 10. I am excited about P3d V2.0 the most as it will still allow a huge number of legacy add-ons to work. I think it has the best chance to be the next gen sim until someone else comes up with something totally new. Therefore trying to petition Microsoft and LM to make it available to the widest audience of users and developers seemed like something worth trying. My intentions are for this to be a positive thing but appreciate there will be many who disagree. To those that think this is a waste of time, there is no obligation to sign up. I don't know whether a few hundred or many thousand signatures will make any difference but wanted to give it a go. Just wanted to clarify a bit of background and also not appear anonymous! James
  12. Christoph, your post sums it up beautifully. Olli, you are also right about an entertainment PMDG 777 not being allowed to work in P3D not being the solution. Hence I will pay anything for one that does work i.e. a commercially licensed one! I don't care as long as I don't have to rely on fsx. What's the point of a long haul aircraft if there's a good chance that at some point during the flight fsx will crash? The longer the flight, the more opportunity for fsx to have it's fun with us! Incidentally, I didn't experience OOM issues. The sounds were OOM like but the crash itself was not. I've had them before and there was no warning message this past few times. Definitely something else! But as I've said, I'm done trying to figure out what. P3D is back working really well for me so I guess a commercial PMDG would be my only real option. Oh well, you live in hope!!
  13. Haha, the law of averages means that for all the many thousands of fsx users with issues there had to be one that has had it running perfectly and here he/she is! I'll bet you'll be the only one immune to the zombie apocalypse too you lucky sod ;-)
  14. What I love the most about FSX is that it has it's own character for everyone's different systems! Sometimes it'll work for months with no issues then suddenly it will take a dislike to something and pack up. Surely FSX is unique in the history of software in this regard? Most software is designed to work on a multitude of platforms out of the box but FSX has to be uniquely tailored for each systems. The various tweaking guides and bibles are full of "your mileage may vary" or " you may find this will/won't work for you" phrases - it's hilarious really. It was such an initially broken piece of software that even after 7 years we still can't get it to play nice. That's why P3D is such an improvement in my mind - someone has taken the time to get rid of the major issues although it is still FSX and a 7 year old bit of code. I was thinking after seeing the comments last night - something like a dedicated flight sim could be ideally suited for the Apple methodology of software and hardware integration. If you could design a flight simulator to fit a specifically designed hardware configuration and sell the whole lot as a package you could end up with something that you almost plug and play. I don't mean specific flight sim PC builds either, I mean a specific box that only has a flight sim on it. For example, EULA's aside, you could take a PS4 or X Box One and use their power and grunt to be dedicated to flight simming. Or similar hardware. Programmed correctly maybe you could add up to 3 monitors? It would come out of the box ready to accept any of the joysticks available and you would turn it on and it wouldn't CTD as it wouldn't have a desktop! If a scenery firm like Orbx teamed up with some of the big aircraft boys like PMDG (maybe 3-5 developers all in) maybe the ultimate flight sim could be created that you would just plug and play. People would argue that the capital investment would be huge - maybe something like Kickstarter would solve this? I know I'd invest and I'm sure many others would too - especially considering how much we all spend on our sims now. There could be future upgrade paths through downloads and there would be no need to worry about the system becoming obsolete - FSX already proves we are more than happy with a 7+ year product cycle! And the PS3 and X Box 360 are still going strong. Come on PMDG, what do you reckon? Not only that, the developers would have a tighter control on things - some would say a bad thing but it works for Apple and the iOS experience is a finely honed experience. This is probably too much to ever hope but I'd be curious to see if it could work. Let me know your thoughts... James
  15. +1 speedbird034 I hear you totally. Your post is only long winded as you've had to explain what you needed to do to get FSX working at an acceptable level. Compromise is crazy when we are spending $90 US on add ons but for FSX we are happy to do so it seems. Here's to the future though. Someone out there will create something which fixes all this but we are in for a long wait
  16. Magnetite, great article and makes sense. Although let me just repeat: FSX is seven years old! According to Moore's law in 2006 there were (approx) 100,000,000 transistors on circuits. Now there are (approx) 2,600,000,000 transistors. This power increase has to count for something but no. A fresh install of FSX on hardware that could probably help fly me physically to the moon still can't get me reliably to Tenerife or any other Canary (or Balearic Island for that matter) in the comfort of my arm chair. If I have to add bufferpools=0 or turn water to 1x low or whatever then I'm barking up the wrong tree. What we need is a simulator that can efficiently and reliably make use of those 26 times more transistors and amazing graphics cards we now have - after all, if PMDG can create a software based 99.9% accurate 777 (and 737 etc) that works on a 7 year old dinosaur, imagine what they could do in a simulation created for our current times! Orbx has scenery, landclass and vectors (and possibly mesh) covered. PMDG, Carenado, Majestic and Aerosoft etc have our backs on the aircraft front. FlyTampa, FlightBeam, Aerosoft and Uk2000 can make places for us to fly into. REX can give the ground, sea and sky a better look. We have better weather forecast software than some TV channels. All we need is a team to create the code for flight dynamics - if I can add bufferpool tweaks then this must be a piece of cake! Come on developers, get your a£&es on kickstarter or something, work together and see the commercial potential of a flight sim made for now! There are a gazillion forum posts on here with people asking for help to get their sims working. Create one that works and people will pay for it! In fact I may do it myself. It can't be that hard...
  17. Every single one of you has a valid point. That's what makes it all so ridiculous and yet impossible for us to walk away from! It's been 7 years on October 10th since FSX was released. In that time hardware has caught up so that most of us are able to run it to a decent degree (in theory). Yet for many it still isn't stable! What other product or software does anyone know that is like this? Imagine if it took more than 7 years to figure out how to get your car running smoothly. Or if you bought a TV and then it required you to hard code various parts in order to be able to watch a channel in HD for example. We wouldn't accept any of it but for some reason with FSX we have and continue to do so. I know I do! Why I earth did I spend £100 on a new HDD last week? Because I desperately wanted it to work and to experience the new add on from PMDG (which I must say is fantastic when FSX plays ball). The fact is that FSX seems to be the most sensitive bit if software ever developed. You add the wrong add on: crash. You tweak the wrong setting: crash. You upgrade to windows 8: crash and your joysticks don't work. You actually have to add code to it to get it working properly! My dad was thinking about buying it. Can you imagine? I told him to wait until there is a product out there which you download, click install and then just open without needing to have some basic programming knowledge. Amazing really isn't it? I bought Bioshock Infinite recently. My system absolute flys with it and I have about a billion FPS on 3 screens. All I did was click about 3 times and away I went. PMDG have developed a software copy of one of the most complex aircraft of our time for us to enjoy on our desktop computers AT HOME. The coding that went into it must be phenomenal yet for the bottleneck is the software it's designed to run on - or at least it is for me. I go back to my original offer and double it. Hell, I'd even triple it again if this amazing product worked on something that didn't need to be nursed into life every time you booted it up.
  18. Just to rub salt in the wounds - check out my pics. As I didn't care any more I set my eyefinity up with 3 monitors (only ever use 1 plus other apps outside in P3D) - the smoothest, prettiest FSX PMDG 777 approach into Keflavik Airport you could ever want - 28FPS and no stutters, no crashes. FSX you are one cruel mistress ;-)
  19. I'm not bashing PMDG about their P3D policy and hope people can see the wry humour in my post - if I don't laugh I will probably just cry - my post is just a bit of fun from a jaded FS ex-user (see what I did there?) - glad to see your only OOM is one you can pass by without it crashing your system! Not at all envious to see the screenshot of my grounded 777. I'm pretending it's a battery fire like the 787 rather than FSX keeping it grounded...(I've lost the plot at this point) I have 2 2GB (crossfire off) 7870 so even better than yours haha! It sounds like you're advising me to tweak again which I think would send me over the edge...kidding. In all seriousness though, I've tried those tweaks and a multitude of others over the years. I end up forgetting which ones have an effect and messing things up hence my current install is as clean as it can be with the basic tweaks. Still isn't enough. Tell me about it - good chance this could be the issue. And I looked into downgrading to windows 7 last week - that's how crazy FSX can make you. You will contemplate losing your ENTIRE SYSTEM, spend hours re-installing another OS, spend hours re-installing FSX (no doubt a downgrade of Win 8 would make this essential?), apply your tweaks, pray, open FSX, open 777 (or any aircraft) and then take bets on how long you've got before it all goes wrong. I don't think the crushing disappoint that is in my mind about 99% guaranteed is going to be worth it. If PMDG fancy sending me one of their old FSX systems that they don't need now for coding as the 777 is finished, I'm happy to provide my address. Please also send over one of your best programmers when you deliver though (I only live in Hong Kong) as I will probably need a bit of help setting up my controllers.
  20. I abandoned FSX late last year. I had bought a brand new computer specifically to use for FSX. It's powerful and can easily get it running at a high level of detail and info, the only thing not perfect being that I opted for an ATI graphics card rather than the recommend for FSX NVidia. I followed Nick's bible on set up and looked through Word Not Allowed's tweaks but kept things simple not wanting to create problems. I loaded up my PMDG's (I had all that had been released at that time) and set off to fly around my Orbx and FlyTampa scenery. About a month later following crash after fatal error after reinstall I decided to give up. I was spending more time fixing problems (75% tweaking vs 25% flying according to Pete Dowson sounds about right) than flying. You all know that soul destroying moment when you have spent 30 mins setting up a flight, 15 mins taxiing, getting clearance and then taking off only for FSX to decide to throw a fit and crash. You want to scream. So I gave up. I followed PMDG's FSX uninstall guide, lost my favourite aircraft but ultimately I'd been fighting with FSX for years now, I couldn't stand it any more. So what next? Someone pointed me to X Plane but it just didn't feel quite right - I can't put my finger on why. Someone then suggested I try Prepa3D so I bought an academic license. Booting things up (minus my beloved PMDG's) I found a rejigged FSX. Admittedly I couldn't load from a start screen (which is still an a£&e) and the graphics had been tweaked for the worst I thought - performance seemed better but honestly I don't think it's a beautiful as FSX for some reason. I installed my compatible scenery and some compatible aircraft and started flying again. Actually flying! What was this miracle? How had Lockheed Martin found this stability with the FSX code? It was brilliant and performed really well on my system and I was happy. It didn't crash, not once! Well once but that was during a power cut. Scenery and aircraft have since come out that work with P3D and my system was set up well. But I was missing my PMDG's. The only aircraft (in my opinion) comparable in complexity (which is the type I prefer) has been Majestic's Dash 8. But it won't get me on a long haul flight like PMDG's 747 or MD-11. I have sat quietly pretending it doesn't matter but then the 777 came out. I tried to ignore it and the clamour and videos but it's been impossible. So I took the painful decision last week to buy a new hard drive for a fresh, separate, clean FSX installation specifically for the 777. I bought the 777 too. I vowed to do things right this time. A bare bones set up that couldn't possibly cause me problems. I would add FTX Global and a couple of their regions plus one or two Flight Beam and FlyTampa sceneries. But that would be it. Maybe I'd add the Airbus X (as I had struggled with this in P3D) but that would definitely be it. I followed Nicks guide to the letter. I didn't tweak any of the fsx.cfg other than what he said to do. I didn't bloat it with traffic or other add-ons other than FSUIPC. I wanted the 777 and if all was well there I would slowly add the other PMDG's in time. With graphics set I loaded up FSX. The menu music played, my girlfriend rolled her eyes and I fired up the 777 at New Chitose Airport (not taxing scenery). Amazing! It looked amazing! I went in to set up the controls making sure all worked ok and took off. It worked! And then it didn't. Something went wrong, the controls disconnected (Windows 8 grrr) and I fell from the sky. Except I didn't as before I crashed FSX crashed. Here we go again I thought. My next flight was more successful and I did a hop over Japan. I really loved the 777 and FSX was behaving itself it seemed. The next couple seemed ok too, maybe all would be well. Then something went awry with control settings. Auto throttles didn't work so I followed the forums solutions to make sure FSUiPC didn't calibrate them. That worked. For a while. Then I loaded up FSX without having changed anything since the last shutdown and now the text around the dials in the VC was blurry, Why?! How can FSX do this? Solutions were forthcoming (see my last posts on the support forums) and tweaking the graphics settings with RadeonPro (instead of NVidia Inspector) fixed things. But then FSX suddenly took a dislike to RadeonPro so I searched for a solution which suggested......and so it goes on. I was tweaking again but worse still, FSX was not playing ball again. Finally I gave up tweaking and set up my 777 for a hop across Australia. I left the blurry dials, I just wanted to fly. I programmed the FMC, started her up and taxied out. I lined up, advance throttles and took to the skies. Oops I caused a tail strike but we would ignore that. I was on track and settled back for a 3 hour flight. After reaching cruise I popped downstairs to get a drink (of water!) and that's when I heard the most awful noise. What the hell was that? I rushed back upstairs to find the OOM bing noise on repeated loop (it wasn't an OOM, just the noise) and FSX frozen. Nooooooo! As I reached to salvage something FSX laughed at me (I heard her) and restarted my computer, flight over. I couldn't believe it. So here I am writing on this forum my tale of woe. I love you PMDG but I hate you FSX. Why can't you work for me? Granted I may be doing something basic wrong but I haven't got any more time in my life to try and figure out what it may be. It could be anything! So I'm abandoning a new hard drive, a new 777 and other PMDG's and loading up my P3D. Right now I'm cruising at 25,000ft in my Dash 8 and will be landing soon. I know I will land too. And takeoff the next time and land the next time. Because P3D works. I don't have the FSX crash fear anymore. And that my friends is why I would pay anything to have my PMDG's working in P3D. I understand the EULA stance you've taken and respect your decision not to support P3D. I'm also sure there are some who have FSX flying (pun intended) beautifully with the 777 and to them I say good for you....as I cry into my water glass. None of this is PMDG's fault, it's FSX. It's old and needs updating and we all know that to get it working requires an investment of time and money. But I'm not doing it any more. My PMDG's will remain in storage in my hard disk hangar and that makes me sad. I will even try X Plane when PMDG move there but that is a long way off. So I repeat, that is why I would pay anything to have PMDG in P3D. It probably will never happen but if you do decide to give it a bash, let me know will you? I'll be waiting. Rant over :-) James
  21. Any ideas anyone? Can't seem to fix this. Only blurs I have. All other textures fine
  22. Thanks Erik, my graphics are almost all maxed out to be honest. Nothing I can really put higher. What's frustrating is that some of the gauges are nice and crisp as is the text on the displays. It's just the text around the dials. The overhead panel and pedestal is the same. Anyone at pmdg have any ideas? I can confirm it is only limited to pmdg aircraft as the airbus x is sharp and crisp. Many thanks
  23. Help again please! It's back. And my fix from before has not helped. All settings as described before and just to reiterate, this has appeared suddenly. I had crisp textures at first and then this just appears after I loaded things yesterday
  24. Both set at that. Just entered full screen and went back to windowed modem and that seems to have fixed the issue. No idea why that would have happened though. Happy to hear any suggestions. Thanks
