PIC on Vatsim 23Feb03. Can you see your name?

Featured Replies

Hello all...Here's a screenshot of one of the many ServInfo data I saved during the event. Can you find your name?I would like to thank everybody that participated in this event for their patience. Vatsim servers were not in our side yesterday and we had a lot of lag especially with those pilots on text only. If only everybody used voice!Very nice experience though if we put aside the few near misses, the flying circuits (did someone say hold? I didn't say hold...), and the big lag we had.One tip for RogerWilco.Make sure you have set your Internet connection to 'SLOW MODEM' NO MATTER what real connection you have. If all the persons connected to the same channel have set this option to 'Slow Modem' seems to eliminate or at least minimize the lag and braking effect of the RW transmitions.Once again, thank you all for flying into Greece!George DorkofikisAthens, Greece

Thank you for the great services George!Counting the times I was disconnected and reconnected I'm afraid I was blinking on your scope... thanks for your patience!Thank the rest of the guys on my behalf, been a great evening!Ilan JonasELY302

Thank you for a great fly in!I came in a little early (remember the fun at LLBG) so it was a straight in app and landing.Normally I don't fly much in that part of the world, but now I even have a great LGAV scenery.See you again soon. jamesCFG248

Hey George,Great event in Greece.Thankfully I had plenty of fuel. You were trying to give me instrucions on voice, and being text only I just kept merrily flying round in circles ;)Anyway the holding at Athens was nothing compared to CDG. There I did my descent from FL380 to FL160 in a holding pattern.Mark

Hehe, yeah...I'm still dizzy from the hold at Paris. :-lolBut it was totally expected though. When the controller asked me if I could keep holding, I told him only for about 1 or 2 more circuits, he got me in OK after that.In future events, I'll remember to include an extra hour's fuel into the flightplan for the holds. :)I saw a whole bunch of targets coming from the UK at the same time we decended on the poor French controllers, so I imagine it was quite overwhelming. :)All in all it was a great event...I got to see a part of the world that is quite beautiful, and the freeware scenery for LGAV is outstanding!I have some shots of the event I'll post when I get home tonight.Regards,Steve DraBTWTo answer your question, yes, I saw my name. :)

Steve Dra

George,Many thanks for the ATC Sunday and LGAV scenery, I have had LGAV by the various authors since FS98 and love the airport.I finally made my first PIC event :-) and am pleased to say I had no problems with SB, FS, or RW, probably because I use 2 PCs when flying on line.I think I only had 2 'whoops', one when trying to figure out which runway exit I was on and which taxiways to use on landing, and when I was given 'DCT KR?' and didn't catch the last letter but figured KRK :-)Oh, and yes my name is in the list BCA01Once again thanks for helping make Sunday enjoyable.

Hi George,Yep, I am nb 5 on the list.On the Greek part of my first flight in a Vatsim PIC event, everything went really smooth. I was really concerned about how I would manage the voice communication in english but I am considering that I did a pretty good job. Pascal Katsiotis (Athens Ground) might think a little bit differently as I requested him to repeat 3 times the kind of simple stuff: "are you ready to copy the clearance?". Pascal, I do apologize and appreciated that you were really kindly patient with me!One thing I also really appreciated on my (aborted!) way to CDG, is that some controllers, even if they where really busy, took the time to confirm in writting some of the voice-given orders when they realized that my understanding was not that good. It was really helpfull, especially in the situation of a request to go direct to a waypoint that was not listed on the flight plan: not easy to try to identify what was said by trying to find the requested point on the en route chart (what did he say? EGB? EJC? what does-it stand for? Could it be a waypoint? Not in the FMS..Where is my chart? Where am I on the chart? What am I looking for? don't remmerber what he told me....ding-dong : the written confirmation comes with EJ(x?), with a great relief on my side!).I guess my understanding will improve as I get more familiar with the procedures and when I know what to expect. In the meantime, I need help and I got it yesterday. Many thanks!Bien amicalementMichelKSEA-AFR011

George,I got an email (complete with pictures) this morning from Kyp who was off in Austria flying and skiing for the last 10 days. I replied what a great job you guys did for us yesterday and what an outstanding job you did on approach. It was a pleasure flying under your control. As to the scenery for LGAV, what more can I say. It was one of the rare times that I have been dispatched to a stand that was actually there and named. Lucky I had the detailed ground chart handy as I followed the assigned taxiways and the yellow stripes right to where it should be and there it was, named and complete with guidance lights. My only regret for the day was a Squawkbox glitch on my laptop that required me to reconnect just as tower handed me off to you on my departure for Paris. Then as we neared France, servinfo was showing over 90 aircraft filed in French airspace, most of them heading to Paris. I got lucky and never had to hold once, anywhere, during the whole event. It was a day to remember. Many Thanks,

Yup I am there, BAW166.The LGAV scenery is spectacular, and the docking system is great (thanks for allocating A13)and it was a pleasure to sit there for 30 mins to refuel and prog the FMC and watch and hear all the action. The only snag was a LFPG , on downwind leg and ...............FATAL ERROR!!!!!!!1It was a great event - lets do that again.Steve

Ok now I'm convinced reading you guys, I'm going to download SB and RW and read the tutorials. Can anybody give me all the adresses I need to begin flying online ?I have a few questions :- When in multiplayer there is no AI airplane I guess. How do you see other aircraft if you don't have them in your FS folder ?- Can I use everything I need to fly online on my second computer ?- Where do I have to look to see if there are events like the one you did with LGAV-LFPG ? (I always depart from LFPG when flying alone as I'm french ;) )I know there are more than one VATSIM website, but which one do you usually look at ?I hope I'll be on the next event.Best regards,Guillaume

OMFG. :-fume I just spent 45 minutes responding and it's gone gone gone.:-fume Damned web forums...

Sorry Ian if I step on your toes ;-)Hi Guillaume,First stop ishttp://www.vatsim.net/ And click the 'join now' button.Once you have your Vatsim PID you need to select a vatsim region to join (Europe) and a division (France if it exists), if there is no division suitable you can stay with Europe until you wish to move to a division.NB It is a long time since I joined Vatsim so the region option may come up during the joining process.Until you get your vatsim PID you cannot connect to vatsim. There is no AI aircraft in vatsim and you need to switch off the FS AI aircraft and ATC before flying on line with vatsim.Other aircraft are seen by you via the Common Shape Library (CSL) files. Basically these files are very trimmed down dipictions of aircraft and a limited number of liveries so you get some variation but frame rates are not hammered by complex aircarft visual models. The main Vatsim web site has an events calendar and often local Vatsim sites have their own events page.Your main Vatsim web site should be the one local to where you fly from, so in your case use http://www.vacc-france.org/To use 2 PC's for on-line flying (if that is what you were asking) you need to connect them both together using Network Cards and a cross-over UTP cable and set up the TCP/IP protocol on each and make sure each PC can see the other. Then you need to install Widefs from Pete Dowson's section atwww.schiratti.com, read the documention on how to install and configure it.Once all that is set up you run FS on the second PC (not connected to the 'Net) and run SB, RW, ServerInfo, Whazzup, weather program (if any) on the first PC that is connected to the net. That is a brief overview, if (when ) you have problems just post here for help or mail me.HTH

Thanks for your reply. I'm getting confused with the two network PC so here is my config :- Big PC for flight simulator (connected to the net throught DSL connexion)- Laptop for FSMeteo, RW, widefs ... (connected to the net too)My question is : can I install RW, SB, weather program on the laptop so that I use my first computer for FS only ?Best regards,Guillaume

>My question is : can I install RW, SB, weather program on the laptop so that I use my first computer for FS only ?

Ok thanks, I already have widefs running in TCP/IP, I use it with Radar contact. One last question : pic events (like the one you did) are mentionned on websites of every region or only on the main vatsim website ?Regards,Guillaume
