How to Setup ASv6.5 for FSX

Hello all,It has become apparent that there is confusion as to how to go about "installing ASv6.5 into FSX".That in itself is confusing, because ASv6.5 is an external program that no longer cares which version of FS you have. It simply connects to FSUIPC and communicates with FS9 or FSX appropriately. It doesn't need to be installed "into" FSX.As for the physical installation location, this is NOT important. Most users with ASv6 already have it installed within their FS9 folder structure. It can remain here or if moving it is desired, it can be uninstalled/reinstalled to the desired new location. Since AS is no longer sim specific, we suggest installing it OUTSIDE of any FS location (i.e. C:ActiveSky). We have attempted to make this as simple as possible and be a simple "one-click" type of update. This appears to be working fine despite the confusion. We are working on making the documentation and associated installation processes a bit less confusing in this regard. In the mean time, here is a brief step-by-step guide for installation and setup:1) Install the ASv6.5 update on top of your existing ASv6 installation. If you don't want AS installed here any longer, you can reinstall your base purchased version into any location you desire, then apply the update to that.2) If you've already got things running and configured for FS9, you can have ASv6 point to FSX instead by modified the FS path entry in ASv6.ini. This is an optional step. The benefit of doing this is that ASv6 will be able to update your FSX station database files and provide a bit more station coverage for depiction. Because FSX already improves this scenario by default, it does not provide a significant enhancement.3) If you're installing ASv6 or ASv6.5 from scratch and intend to use it only with FSX, AS will automatically ask you for the appropriate FS location during startup. Just point to FSX. Once you've done this and saved your options you're all set.4) If you intend to use both FS9 and FSX, and are installing AS from scratch, we suggest pointing ASv6 FIRST to FS9 (when it asks) and then later, if you prefer to have the station database updated in FSX (optional, not required), just adjust the FS path in the ASv6.ini file. Once this is done, databases are updated in both, and changing things from this point will not be required.5) Of course you must have FSUIPC v4.00 or later (4.02 just released) installed for use with FSX which is available at http://www.schiratti.com/dowson.html.Thank you everyone!

Damien, An excellent explanation and much appreciated. A similar explanation for a server client setup would be appreciated. I think the following is correct?:1. Install ASv6.5 on the client machine (over existing ASv6 or new)2. Set up connections between server and client (I haven't put the detail of this in here. Note that the pinned explanation of this connection on the forum is a 2002 one and is somewhat out of date regarding WinXP options-but helpful nevertheless).3. Direct ASv6 to FSX directory and to FSX docs directory4. Install FSUIPC4 to server (Wideserver is part of new FSUIPC4)5. Install WideFS to client (for wideclient. exe and wideclient dll)6. Register both FSUIPC4 and WideFSI have been corresponding with Pete Dowson on the use of FSUIPC4 and WideFS and he has advised me (if I understand him correctly) that a registered version of both FSUIPC and WideFS is required to connect ASv6 in a server/client enviroment. I had thought FSUIPC was not required to be registered regardless as to whether a stand alone or networked envronment was being used.Rod

Follow up on my own note. Pete advised me a registered FSUIPC is not reuqired only WideFS. Sorry about that.

Apologize for the dumb question(s)up front...1) I'm running my FS9 with FSUIPC 3.7, and FSX with 4.02. I downloaded ASv6.5 (over my current ASv6 install located in FS9) Will I get ASv6.5 weather for both or only FSX? If not in FS9...is AS reverting to 6.0?2)Do I need to turn weather settings off in FSUIPC 4.02 like the previous FSUIPC versions?3)Am I getting ASv6.5 clouds or default FSX clouds? Thanks in advanceRake

Thank you for yet another genius AS release.Couple of questions/remarks: I completely re-installed AS6 and the AS6.5 update outside of any FS patch and have both FS9 and FSX.1. Upon launching ASG a dialog box is diplayed that all my FS9 textures are being backed up. Are the FS9 textures being backed up or my FSX textures? How does ASG know which FS version is running, when I start AS6.5 stand-alone, without any FS version running (Send to FS)?2. Options Menu (Graphics): Enable GE Pro Submit on New FP. GE Pro is not patched or available for FSX yet. Just wondering what it does.3. Auto-submit function. Again, how does AS6.5 know which version I am running, if I for example start AS6.5 first and then the FS? It's a little confusing for now which version of FS is being used. If I might suggest something, I would just add an option upon startup that asks "Which version of FS do you want to use for this session of AS?" to avoid any confusions and to enable/disable some menu options that are suitable for each session.Just curious,Pat

Hi Rake,1. For both versions of FS04.2. Yes, just one time.3. FSX clouds, ASV6.5 does not have ASG for FSX.Thanks,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://www.fseconomy.com/

Hi Pat,1A. Your FS9 textures, one time only, because you re-installed AS.1B. ASG will not work with FSX and you cannot even point ASG to FSX, only FS04.2. Remember this is a version for both FSX and FS04 so that is for FS04.3. Because you have ASG set up to point to your FS04 installation so it only send textures to FS04, just as before! We threw around those ideas in the past few weeks. Remember that AS will automatically recognize which version you are running.Thanks,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://www.fseconomy.com/

Thanks Jim for the excellent support (as always). Yea, I just could have read the release notes to find out that ASG was FS9 only for now. Duh. ;)

Jim or Damian,Could you please elaborate for a moment on the paths in the .ini file? In my WideFS setup, I would obviously change the FS path from FS9 to FSX. My confusion is in regards to the App-Data path. It is my understanding that the App-Data path should point to my account's application data folder on the WideServer and in the past, AS would append ~MicrosoftFS9 to the the end of the path to update the wxstationlist.bin file therein. For example, my App-data path for ASv6 is Y:Documents & SettingsUserNameApplication Data and AS would know to complete the full path thereby making Y:Documents & SettingsUserNameApplications DataMicrosoftFS9. Now, if I keep that same app-data path, the FSX equivilent wxstationlist.bin file being under ~MicrosoftFSX doesn't seem to be updated by ASv6.5. Is there a more proper way to set the App-Data path in the .ini file to work with both FS9 and FSX?Thanks for your insight...UPDATE: Well, I take that back. The wxstatinlist.bin file in ~MicrosoftFSX does appear to be updated as it has a very recent date-time stamp. But I never changed the original app-data path in the asv6.ini file so how are you determining whether to update the FS9 or FSX version of the file? Or, is this a trade-secret, LOL?R/

Jim, just to be sure after installing the 6.5 update I added the line FSXPath - I: (mapped drive to FSX.)It is in addition to the mapping for FS9Ken

As a follow up to my post I started ASV6.5 Made sure graphics was disabled. Put the 747 on the active runway at KLAX and it updated the weather when I started wideclient. I moved the aircraft to KBOS active runway and it then updated the weather there. I moved to KDTW active runway and it updated there. I moved to RJAA and got rain after it updated. I took off and the weather changed as I flew. I must say the rain effects are a heck of alot better in FSX. The pavement looks wet too. I don't know why but I suspect it has to do with the line I put into the ini file. I have reg ver FSUIPC 4.02 and Reg ver 6.7 of WideFS. Ken

Hi Sir, I apologie for this message, but before doing anything ,I'd like to be sure about the right procedure:I'v already ASV6.5 installed within FS9 folder, and my goal is to reinstall it, within ActiveSky folder (It'll be used especially with FSX later).I'v got a "setup.exe" procedure in my C:ActiveSky6InstallPackage folder (dating of December 21 of 2005, and which is supposed to modify or repair or remove ASV6+ASG).My questions are :1)Must I launch this setup.exe procedure in order to first remove ASV6 from is current position (fs9module folder) ?2)Then should I setup again the setup.exe procedure in order to reinstall ASV6 in the new folder, and finally run the ASV65 setup.exerecently downloaded ?Thank's for helpBest Regardsjc Michel

Hi Al,"But I never changed the original app-data path in the asv6.ini file so how are you determining whether to update the FS9 or FSX version of the file? Or, is this a trade-secret, LOL?"LOL.. Actually it's just checking for existence of such FSX appdata path and if found it uses that one instead of FS9.As mentioned earlier we tried to make this real simple and have the app transparently figure things out all on its own. Best,

Hi,Yep, you got it...Use add/remove from control panel to uninstall ASv6 (using the remove from the setup.exe also works). Then run that setup.exe you found in ActiveSky6InstallPackage to reinstall ASv6, this time specifying C:ActiveSky as the installation path.

While you're successfully implementing the KISS method, I'm out here tyring to make it harder than it really is, LOL... Don't do that! You'll confuse me, LOL... OK, enough tinkering and pondering your good code, I'll just shutup and go fly now, LOL....:)
