Is upgrading to 2Gb of RAM worth it?

Featured Replies

I'm considering buying 2 Gb of RAM for my AMD 64+ system. Currently I have 1 Gb of PC3200 DDR400 Crucial Ballistix RAM running DDR (2-2-2-5). I'm intending to buy 2 Gb of PC4000 DDR500 Crucial Ballistix RAM (probably running stock 3-3-3-8). This is NOT to increase my FPS, but to try and avoid load times and stutters in games like FS2004 and BF2.Does anyone have experience of going from 1 Gb to 2 Gb? Did it make any difference? Thanks in advance.P.S. I have done a forum search but can't find anything specific.P.P.S. MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum mobo, AMD 64+ 3500 Winchester, GeForce 6800GT 256Mb, Audigy 2, Matrox DiamondPlus 10 250Gb SATA HDD.

I quite honestley noticed zero difference.

I did it recently (3 weeks ago) and while I think that there may be a very slight increase in Windows XP performance ( i.e. the whole computer "seems" to run a bit smoother, I can't say that I see any difference in FS9. Benchmarking confirms that any objective measures are probably not significant.I think that this just re-emphasizes the pretty well agreed on principal that FS9 is really CPU dependant more than anything else.Ed GreenKCLThttp://www.panelshop.com/DEV.jpg

A little while back I went from 512MB to 1GB. That simple upgrade made a world of difference. 90-95% of my stutters in FS9 up and disapppeared. And the sluggish Windows XP performance went away too.I did at one point try an additional 1GB of memory in my machine, but noticed no performance increase as regards FS9 startup, running and flying. It was not my memory so I took it out and have not really felt the need to buy another 1GB for myself. For you though you may see a difference, this is only from my own experience. While running FS9 and watching memory usage during that time, I rarely see usage going above 600MB. I don't know what 2GB is going to do for you. It may well do nothing at all. Here are is an article from the Microsoft KB that you may find helpful:308417 How to set performance options in Windows XPhttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;EN-US;308417Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Jason CYOO - Formerly MYNN[br /]General Aviation Fan[br][br /]

I'm actually going to 2GB on a new rig on advice from others. I do a lot of graphics work and multitasking - including when flying FS - so I was easily persuaded. That said, I have heard from many that when running FS9 alone with XP as your operating system, more than 1GB is superflous and will bring you no improvement. 1GB is pretty well optimal and certainly will show you better fluidity than 512MB RAM. That said, I've been running 512MB on Windows XP Home (with an AMD Athlon 2400+ (2.0GHZ) and GeForce 4 Ti4800) for some time now and haven't abandoned the hobby yet! Average frame rates with most sliders maxed and a mix of add-ons are 15-20FPS.MarkMark "Dark Moment" BeaumontVP Fleet, DC-3 AirwaysTeam Member, MAAM-SIM[a href=http://www.swiremariners.com/cathayhk.html" target="_blank]http://www.paxship.com/maamlogo2.jpg[/a]

I recently upgraded from 1 gig to 1.5. I did this specifically for bf2 (battlefield loves more ram and you will notice a big increase). However in flightsim, I noticed no improvements. I didn't do any benchmarking or anything, but just from observation I noticed no real improvement. With fs2004, if you close out all your unnecessary background tasks, you should be in fine shape with 1 gig of ram. For bf2 on the other hand, it will help. Your computer won't grind for 10 minutes after you are done playing for one thing :)

If you have 1GB of ddr400 and want to upgrade, remember to again get ddr400. DONT go for ddr333 or slower as the faster ram may not be compatible with the slower, but more then likely will run at the slower speed.I am sure you knew this already.

Thank you all for your replies. What a community! In other forums there would have been someone calling me a noob and then an argument breaking out about which RAM timings are the best, etc.I get the message. For FS2004, more RAM = no improvment. That's a pity, I was hoping to stop the stutters I get when I pan around with TrackIR and those annoying empty white textures that you briefly see in your peripheral vision.I also understand that BF2 will show improvments. I wonder if Forgotten Battles will also show an improvment? Now the agony starts.Buy 2Gb RAM and hope it's worth it? Stick with 1Gb but buy an Opteron chip and O/C it? Wait 6 months and update entire system to AMD M2 socket mobo and DDR2 RAM? Oh the pain of computer upgrades :-)
