July 18, 200619 yr Anyone have any idea what the AMD pricecuts will actually be? I look now at the price of the lowest A64 X2 (3800+) @ $297 and think surely they must be going to give them away with every stick of 512M RAM purchased. :-lol Gary 9800X3D | 4090 | 64GB | 2+1TB NVME | 2TB SSD | 2TB HDD | 85/50/43” TVs | Quest 3 | DOF H3 Motion Rig | Buttkicker | T.16000M Flight Kit MSFS @ 4K Ultra DLSS Performance FG 80 FPS | VR VDXR Godlike 80Hz SSW | MSFS VR DLSS Quality, Ultra Preset - Windows 11 Acer Nitro 5 | i5-11400H | RTX 3060 6 GB | 32GB DDR4 | 15.6" FHD IPS 144Hz | 2 x 512 GB SSD | Windows 11
July 18, 200619 yr I guess we'll find out after July 27th when Conroe hits the streets. AMD needs to cut most processor prices by roughly half(!) to compete with the Conroe or they will face a mass migration to Intel. This is certainly going to be VERY interesting.I have to say that I was completely shocked to see how aggressively Intel prices the Conroe. This was not something I expected or even anticipated - and I guess it comes to a surprise to AMD as well.Pat
July 18, 200619 yr AMD prices are taking a massive dive as of July 24 here. I would imagine this will be the case for suppliers world wide.I'm shocked at the Intel pricing too. But happy about it. Now I've got to fight the urges to change back to Intel :-lol Cheers,John TavendaleTextures by Tavers - https://www.facebook.com/texturesbytavers

July 20, 200619 yr If this is true, then we can say goodbye to AMD. 20% off the FX62 leaves still a hefty pricetag of $800. The Conroe 6600 beats the FX62 in almost all benchmark and costs $500 less. That's a no-brainer, as far as I am concerned.Pat
July 20, 200619 yr On THD I read that if AMD doesnt cut the price of FX-62 to match the price of the 6600, AMDs wont sell any more.
July 20, 200619 yr The X2 5000+ at 282 looks sweet and so does the 65W EE version at 324!!Hope this helps,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://dot.kelder.net:8080/fseconomy/
July 20, 200619 yr You guys are right. I can't see AMD selling any more FX62's AT ALL unless they drop the price to match the 6600, at least...Why are some of you surprised at the cheap price of the Core 2 Duo? Intel WANTS desperately to get that market share back. Intel has a massive amount of production capability so they've probably been planning the aggressive price for some time--and the production to match it.Still, I don't think the 6600 model of the Core 2 Duo will have a street price of $320-$350. If this thing is as good (fast, low power consumption, cool running) as they say, surely high demand will raise the street price some.Rhett Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB
July 20, 200619 yr In the Q2 Intel earnings conference call yesterday, Intel CEO Paul Otenllini stated that there will be enough supply of Conroe to meet expected demand and that retailers will be fully stocked by launch date.Hopefully that will stop any major price gouging by the e-tailers.We shall see....I think I might try and get me one of those E6400's...... July 20, 200619 yr Time to think about what mainboard and RAM to get with the Conroe. AMD is shooting themselves in the foot, if the price of the FX62 doesn't get down to the same level. In fact, NONE of the FX processors have a significant drop in price and this is AMDs flagship.I upgraded my system about two months ago to a 3800+ with 939 socket. 939, becuase the AM2 mainboards were just out and 939 let me keep my good ol' DDR memory.A lot of people are in the same situation. To upgrade again, you almost have to change mainboard (and DDR2 RAM). So, if I have the option for a AMD 5000X2 for $282, plus the cost of mainboard and RAM compared to a Conroe 6600 for hundred bucks more that provides about 15% better performance AND lower clock rates AND lower power consumption. The choice should be easy.Pat
July 20, 200619 yr >Time to think about what mainboard and RAM to get with the>Conroe. I think that is the part that may be a problem temporarily. My understanding is that really right now, only the Intel 975 chipset motherboards can take Core2Duo CPU's. There might be a shortage of these mb's around at first. Is that correct, that only the 975 chipset can run Core2Duo's right now?>A lot of people are in the same situation. To upgrade again,>you almost have to change mainboard (and DDR2 RAM). For sure I am excited about it. AMD said they were going to drop prices to deliver "the most performance per dollar". Well, they are going to have to drop more than what is reported in this thread, to do that...it would appear. Especially the FX series, you are right, the FX will get killed if they keep its price that high. But I am still not sure if this idealistic price of $350 for a 6600 core2duo cpu will be realistic. We'll see...Rhett Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB
July 20, 200619 yr My understanding is that the only chipset available at launch will be the intel 975X, nVidia will follow a few weeks later with the nForce 500 with Core2Duo support, ATI will be the last in September with the RD500 chipset. (Source: anandtech)So, yea, it would be definitely wise to hold off a little bit and wait for the nVidia chipset. And I know that there will be tons of tons of whining at launch, because a standard 775 socket DOES NOT support the Core2Duo, unless it says so specifically in the specs.Pat
July 20, 200619 yr I think with the AMD price drops a lot of people will still remain loyal to AMD for the next few months. Buying a new board, RAM isn't a cheap way to upgrade if you've invested a bit in a current AMD setup.Suppliers down here have been saying the disti's are saying there aren't enough Conroe CPUs shipping here to keep up with demand. July 21, 200619 yr Chipsets that currently support Conroe:975X (only if the voltage of the mainboard is the low version for Conroe)965P - new chipset designed for Conroe. Different memory controller than 975X that is supposed to be faster. Real world testing shows that currently the 975X chipset is faster and overclocks better.Bios revisions should help the 965P improve in the near future.Prices currently same for both boards, but 965P supposed to drop soon.Only other contender is some VIA chipset, but forces the PCIe lane to run at only 8x Glenn Ryzen 3700X, X570 Pro Wifi, 32GB 3600mhz RAM, Nvidia Titan Xp "Galactic Empire", RM750x PSU, H700 case, 2x NVMe M2 SSD, 1x SATA SSD
