July 24, 200619 yr I'm not planning on upgrading until around Vista release anyway, so if the last page of Tomshardware review is accurate, I've got my eyes on the quad-core cpu coming this winter.... Declared weather: FSX: ASN / FS9: ASE
July 24, 200619 yr It's July 24 and I have only seen one retailer so far applying a fraction of the above publicized price cuts (AMD 4600X2 for $300 and 'out of stock'). I guess it'll take a few days or week until we'll see those price cuts across the board.I did make up my mind and I'll stay loyal with AMD. $250 for an 4600X2 is not bad at all! After all, I do have a very good 939 mainboard and very good DDR1 RAM, so I don't see a reason to upgrade and spend and additional $300 for an overpriced ($200?) mainboard and RAM that I don't need.Yea, the Core2Duo is nice, but the AMD4600X2 will still be high-end for quite some time, although the crown for now goes to intel.Pat
July 24, 200619 yr NCIX here in Canada applied the drop as of Friday 21stLink:http://www.ncix.com/go/?amdnewsletterThey also sell / ship to the USA and have stock. July 24, 200619 yr Thanks for the link.. If they had the 4600X2 or 4800X2, they would have my money already. Oh well, patience is a virtue. I don't really *need* a new CPU anyway, but one of the fastest CPUs on the market for $250 would surely be nice.Pat
July 24, 200619 yr Just picked up a 4800X2 for $309.http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Se...p?EdpNo=1447057Pat
July 24, 200619 yr Stop tempting me Pat!!!!Aargh. You are going to make me jones for a 4800+. I have to keep telling myself, I have a San Diego core cpu (3700+) and I *don't* need to upgrade it. I *don't* need to upgrade it.Really, if I can resist $250 4600's, I will keep what I have until about this time next year.Rhett Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB
July 25, 200619 yr Yea, and I just upgraded a few weeks to a single-core 3800+ and thought "This is it. I won't upgrade for a long time". I never had a high-end processor in my life, so for the $300 (or $200, if I can find a buyer on eBay for the 3800+), I can have one now without the hassle of upgrading mainboard and memory.I did some extensive research and DDR2 or even AM2 socket has nothing to offer at this point to justify an upgrade, except maybe a whopping 0.05% marginal increase in performance. Conroe is surely nice, but then again, I don't really need the very bleeding edge that sets me back $600. I can justify $300, but not twice as much and I guess this is exactly the consumer behavior was AMD is hoping for by cutting the price. This baby will be more than good enough for FS9 and will perform brilliantly with FSX and Vista, plus I can stay loyal to AMD.Pat
July 25, 200619 yr I'm eyeing off the X2 3800+ for $150 and an overclock target of 2.4GHz (conservative for this chip from what I've read on the net), putting me in the 4800+ dual core lovin' seating section. After FSX comes out, I will likely end my three year love affair with AMD and buy up some Core 2 Duo action and pass my AMD rig on to my FS nut son.Gary 9800X3D | 4090 | 64GB | 2+1TB NVME | 2TB SSD | 2TB HDD | 85/50/43” TVs | Quest 3 | DOF H3 Motion Rig | Buttkicker | T.16000M Flight Kit MSFS @ 4K Ultra DLSS Performance FG 80 FPS | VR VDXR Godlike 80Hz SSW | MSFS VR DLSS Quality, Ultra Preset - Windows 11 Acer Nitro 5 | i5-11400H | RTX 3060 6 GB | 32GB DDR4 | 15.6" FHD IPS 144Hz | 2 x 512 GB SSD | Windows 11
July 25, 200619 yr ...and to make my luck complete, I just sold my 3800+ (single core) for $120 on eBay. $180 for a new X2 4800+ is not shabby at all.:-beerchug Pat
