My PC Building Project.

Featured Replies

OK... I am starting my PC build Project. The Lian Li Case arrived. (The other stuff is to come tomorrow).I already have a nice enermax 550W power supply that I thought I can fix to the Liam Li case.So I opened the box and went about seeing what and how everything fits. Its a nice case, well built an all..now my first problem. The Instructions for this case almist nil. A Pamphlet. That is all.1. How would I fix the HD or a floppy disk or a DVD drive to the slot in this case?In all the cases I have seen at Frys etc... there are some side clips/contraption where you would have to slide in the drives and it would hold the thing with those clips. Here I see no such clips and there are no clips that came in the package.Hmmmm,.... Any ideas? Or do I just scew in from the sides into the HD (Assuming the HD has holes on the side)?http://www.newegg.com/Product/ShowImage.as...Case+%2D+Retail

Is there a set of screws? I just screw the correct screws into the four holes in the drives.

Have been building my flight sim computers for a number of years and have collected a lot of hardware, screws(many sizes) and other stuff. I would simple installed the right sizes screws to scure the drives. I perfer screws because they do a better job scuring the hardware. Good luck with you new computer. I hope to build a new one after DX10 & vista are released.MY flt sim systemP4 3.0, Clocked to 3.16, Asus P4C800-E-Deluxe Motherboard, Win XP Home Editions Service Pack II, XFX GeForce 6600GT 256MB, 2ea Corsair 512 MB DDR400 PC3200 Double Data, 2ea Ultra 512 MB PC3200 DDR400, Antec SL400 W 12V ATX Power Supply, Seagate 40 GB 7200 RPM, WD 740 SATA 10,000 RPM, CH Yoke & Pedals

Thanks Erv and Howard. Appreciate that.Issue 1: I have connected my PU to the Case and its snug and nice. I am just reaslizing that I don't have SATA Power out from my PU. But then...reading this "How to".http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/other/144/4It tells me I can use the 4 pin molex connector instead. Don't know if there is any disadvantage of this or not. Edited to add: My PU actually has the SATA Power connector.. But the box that had the scews etc...had "SATA Power adaptor" unchecked. hmmmm.Issue 2: I am going to be downloading the 32bit Vista OS RC1. Don't know how buggy it is at this stage. Should I go ahead and install this and load the upcoming FSX on it or ...should I install Win XP? Hmmmmmm.....Misc:I am taking my own sweet time..reading and googling for answers. I am enjoying this is so far.I just realized, I may not have any empty floppy disk with me. Need to get 1 box.I also realized that the DVD ROM that I had in the box (I bought it 2 years ago for another PC) is actually white/Beige and my Case is black.. so I just ordered a Black DVD RW disk for $29 bucks. Tough decision if I should use it as a second ROM drive (ugly) or not. Hmmmm....Manny

MannyHow about dual boot hard drives with Vista on one and XP on the other?

Hmm... don't know how to do it. And if I have two OS, would I have to install FSX twice? like one OS can't see files within the other? Is that how it works?Manny

Hopefully all is going well!! I've been downloading Vista RC1 tonight myself..Guess I'll do a dual boot set-up and give it a shot tomorrow...Hopefully you have all your issues figured out by now...But just in case..."1. How would I fix the HD or a floppy disk or a DVD drive to the slot in this case?"You should see a bag of hardware with your case:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/156901.jpgIt should contain a various assortment of screws, motherboard stand-offs and general useful trinkets...You should have plenty and will wind up having stuff left over...The Motherboard Stand-off's are important...Either going to be in the form of a clip..or a screw-in deal...Here are some examples...Clip Type..From the newegg pics..Looks like this will be you here:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/156904.jpgScrew in type deal:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/156902.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/156903.jpgYou may have to wait until you have your mb in hand to install the stand-offs..As you have an assortment of hole choices...You'll obviously need to match those up with your perticular mb...The DVD and Floppy drives will just screw in...Those components should come with the appropriate screws like your PS did...Or you should have some extras avaliable in the hardware bag...I always remove the "other" case side cover so I can get screws in both sides of each component...Important note!!I highly recommend you consider you screws and other msp(miscellaneous small parts) "accountable"..In other words...Dump your pile of stuff on a table across the room...Then figure out what you need...Count out the MSP...Carry Only What You Need with you to your case...If you drop something inside the case..Find it!! Your accountable for it...(Same concept we use at work building High Performance Fighter Jets...)http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/156905.jpgYou just don't want a loose screw winding up behind the mb and causing a short...Just a really good practice..Clean As You Go..For the HD removable tray...You should have a divider:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/156906.jpgIf you look close in my pic of my Lan Li 6070b case(Similar Design)...You'll get how that divider works...See how it is used to Custom Fit the HD:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/156908.jpg"Edited to add: My PU actually has the SATA Power connector.. But the box that had the scews etc...had "SATA Power adaptor" unchecked. hmmmm."So your Good?? Your PSU HAS a 24 pin ATX plug?? (Not 20pin Correct)...I wanna go check your PS from the other thread and confirm...Your gonna need 24pin ATX power...Most modern Power Supplies are equipped with at least an adapter...You may..(Just in Case)..if your out and about tomorrow..Go grab one of these at CompUSA...(about $5 or so)...That way your covered...http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/156920.jpg"And if I have two OS, would I have to install FSX twice? like one OS can't see files within the other? Is that how it works?"You could set yourself some partitions...(I Highly recommend this!!)My typical set-up if I were only using one drive would be a 10gb partition(Drive C:)..This would be for OS and all other system oriented stuff(virus Software..Ect..)..The remainder partitioned as (Drive D:) for FS...(Note: Your Raid0 array will be considered 1 Drive...if your still planning on Raid0)You could easily add any other partition's you desire...For example: If you wanna do a dual boot XP and Vista...(I plan to do exactly this tomorrow)...You could just put another 10gb partition for Vista... So you'ld have something like this:C: = Windows XP OS and other system related stuff... (Maybe 10gb)D: = Vista OS and all other related stuff... (Maybe 10gb)E: = FS9 Instillation.. (Remainder of the drive..or what ever size you see fit)FS would be avaliable by either OS and protected since it's on it's own partition...Therefore..If XP get's Honked up for some reason..And you need to Format and do a Clean Install...All you will effect will be your Drive C:..Your FS9 Drive(D: or whatever) will not be effected(See Note)...It's a good deal...I alway's set up like that...(Note: You will possiable have to re-install some of your Payware Aircraft...Any Aircraft which have installed dll's into XP's system32 file to operate..You would have to re-install those guys...In my case it's fairly minimal)...Far better than re-installing Everything!!!Some Dual Boot info...This tutorial won't completely apply to your situation...Your doing a clean install...So you'll set your partitions up during WindowsXP instillation...you'll Create your C:,D: and E: ect..during XP set-up...Then you'll go on to install XP on C:..So it will be the only drive formatted initionally...Later..Once your up and running...you'll use XP's Disk manager to format the other partitions...You won't have to worry about partition majic or the like...http://www.lifehacker.com/software/top/win...ista-179906.phphttp://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com/forum...t-xp-vista.htmlhttp://www.pro-networks.org/vistabootpro/My typical Saturday..he he...What a mess!! http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/156909.jpgGood Luck!! Have Fun!!

Hey..I went to the other thread to look up your PSU...I didn't see it listed...Can you post the name ect.. of the PSU you got...Thanks

Hey...still not sure exactly what Entermax 550w psu you have...But if the connections look like this..Your Good To Go...http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/156928.jpgThe 20+4pin will plug into the EATXPWR on the mb..If your's doesn't have that additional 4pin thing for the Main EATXPWR connector...You would need to go get that 20/24pin adapter I listed above...Note: Not to be confused with that +12v 4pin connector...As you will need that one also...It will be plugged into the ATX12v connector in the upper Left Hand corner of the mb... To Re-Address this...I didn't read/understand correctly above..."Issue 1:I have connected my PU to the Case and its snug and nice. I am just reaslizing that I don't have SATA Power out from my PU. But then...reading this "How to".http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/other/144/4It tells me I can use the 4 pin molex connector instead. Don't know if there is any disadvantage of this or not.Edited to add: My PU actually has the SATA Power connector.. But the box that had the scews etc...had "SATA Power adaptor" unchecked. hmmmm."It's not necessary to have the SATA power connectors...They are useful for "Hot Swapping"...Other than that...I'm not aware of ANY benifit what so ever...The 4pin Molex (AKA: Legacy Connector) will be Fine...If you do indeed have the SATA Connectors on your PSU...Kewl...Use them...If not..No Biggie...Use the Molex...Along those lines: Included with the mb...You may get some Molex to SATA adapter's(see pic)...So...Let's say your PSU Doesn't have the built-in SATA connector...All you have is Molex....There would still be no need to use the Molex/SATA adapter..unless you intended to have your drives "Hot Swapable"...Which you won't...So I wouldn't use any un necessary connectors...Just use the Molex Legacy Connection...(Hope I'm not confusing the issue??)Pic:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/156929.jpgHope this Helps...

Ha Chuck, Sorry to Pipe-In but Excellent info - thank you. Also hadn't seen the "FOD" thing since I left the aircraft jet eninge business(USAF & GE Aircraft Engines) some years ago. An excellent point. Brought back old memories - FOD ate our lunch in Vietnam - spent many hours repairing compressor blades on the old F-4 (new at the time).Erv

Chuck,Thanks for that detailed post. I think, at the end of it, this could be a sticky. for the newbies.1. The thing about the "Standoffs". You know I have been reading on the topic "how to build your Pc" for a while and I somehow never figured that out. I either didn't pay attention or it was just taken for granted and never explicitly mentioned. I don't believe the Mother board documentation talks about it either. I just happened to see it yesterday in http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/other/144/2 on the topic of spacers. and you also happened to post it here yesterday. I did not know that. I would have screwed the MB to the base of the case I am pretty sure short circuiting the whole thing. :)2. The SATA power. Yeah.. my PU has all the things that you mention. The 24 (20+4) power and the SATA power cable (so I don't think I would need that converter cable...so thats the converter cable that is not included in the package they mentioned) That makes sense now.3. The divider thingi you mentioned to be used for placing my HD. OK.. I am going to take a look and put that together.Great tips and information here. I would really hate all this information to be lost after this is done. At the end of it, if this thread could be cleaned up and put as a sticky it would benefit a lot of folks.Manny

Hiya Erv...Ahhhh..The Rhino!! Sweet!! What A Jet!!Boy..I couldn't even imagine the FOD issues you guys must have faced over there...It's pretty amazing how effective those two huge Vacuum Cleaners can be..huh...Thank you Sir..For the work you've done Defending our Country..My hat is off to all of you...ThanksI just wanted to pop back on here and talk a little more about setting-up the hard drive...Partitioning ect...Manny..Have you thought about how you want to set-up your partitions??It would be nice to have a "Game Plan" together by the time your ready to install WindowsXP...That way you can create the partitions during install...You may be an expert on this already?? If you changed your mind later on...And you wanted to add or delete partitions..You can apparently use a program like Partition Magic to do so...I've never used one of those types of programs...I hear people who swear by them...You may be familiar with them??I just always wind up doing a Clean install...Just never felt like I wanted to buy Partition Majic...It may be the coolest thing since sliced bread..I dunno?? It dawned on me this AM that I'm going to want to have a Drive for FSX...I have yet to even load the demo...But since it's just around the corner...I'm going to figure it into my set-up this go around...I've also never tried out Vista...So..I'm going to set-up a drive for that..I'm re-doing my FX Rig...I have 2 Raptor150's..Which I will set-up in a Raid0 Array...Then I have an additional 36gb Raptor which will be a normal SATA interface...So here is my plan..This Go Round..he he..This Rig is for FS Only..I won't even have an internet browser installed..It will have Antivirus(Nod32)..I'll use Windows Firewall and it's behind my Linksys WRT54G Router...It will be online for ASV6 Weather and any other software updates only...I'll probably stick AdAware, CCleaner and RootkitRevealer on there too...None of them use any recources and are handy maintenence tools...I consider them necessary..On the Raid0 Array..I'm gonna have the following partitions:C: = WindowsXP, Nod32, AdAware, CCleaner, RootkitRevealer and associated XP hardware drivers..This partition will be 7-10gb in size..D: = Windows Vista RC1..Along with the same suite as listed above..I think I'll set this one to 10gb in size...E: = FS9 and Everything related to FS...It will be the remainder of the Raid0 array...I've decided that I'll use the 36gb Raptor as my FSX drive for now...So it will be:F: = FSX Only driveIf I didn't have the extra 36gb Raptor to use as my FSX drive...I could easily create another partition on the Raid0 Array which would be Drive F: and house FSX...So...I just thought I'd put this out there...You may have something Totally different in mind?? That's kewl!! Whatever works!! This is just an example of My thinking during a Fresh install...That's my point...Not that you should follow my set-up...More that you should have your own game plan in mind so you don't wind up wanting to re-do everything later..he heHave Fun!!

Chuck,I do not know (as yet) how to partition a disk. Intitially I thought I'd install the Win XP in drive C: which is the entire (250 X 2) RAID 0.That was my game plan until early next year when Vista is released.:)But having read the posts here.. I am googling for instuctions on how to and what not about Paritioning.A buddy of mine was supposed to send me the Win XP that he bought and is not using (it looks like I may not get it until the end of next week. Bummer. 1. Either I go an buy a Win XP here (that will put me back at least $200 bucks home edition) or 2. I just install the Vista for now. Or 3. Just build it physically and utilze the week reading on partitioning and be prepared for next weekend OS install. Manny

Boy..I really like that Tech Power-Up link you posted!! Very informative!! That should be sticky!! I've bookmarked it...My problem is I loose all these Kewl articls amidst all of the dang bookmarks I've accumulated...When I go try to find something like that..I can't and wind up doing allot of typing instead..he he...I think I probably have seen that one before but just didn't remember it?? Good Stuff!!"I do not know (as yet) how to partition a disk. Intitially I thought I'd install the Win XP in drive C: which is the entire (250 X 2) RAID 0.That was my game plan until early next year when Vista is released."I know your getting allot thrown at you..Sorry...Information Overload..he heHopefully you'll find an artical on partitioning..Of the quality of that Tech Power-Up artical...If not I or somebody can help you out with that...(I may type something up anyhow?? But I kinda wanna get my stuff going too...And I'm a terriably slow typist..he he)Much like setting up a Raid Array...Partitioning is No Sweat...Easy to be intimidated if you've never done it...But once you do..You'll again be saying.. "That's It!!" "1. Either I go an buy a Win XP here (that will put me back at least $200 bucks home edition) or "Check into an OEM copy of XP...Should be about half price...or about 85 bucks at newegg(But they won't do Weekend Delivery's??)..I've got a small Tech Shop around me that has OEM copys avaliable...http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16832116056"2. I just install the Vista for now. Or "Thats and option..huh"3. Just build it physically and utilze the week reading on partitioning and be prepared for next weekend OS install. "You definatly have more will power than I..he he

Chuck,Not sure if you would know this one..but let me go ahead and ask anyway.I have a Win XP OEM disk that came with my previous PC from DELL XPS Gen2.Would I be able to use this disk to install my WinXP temporarlly? Till I get my regular XP Pro disk? Is there a way to Install the OS without the registration# (I am assuming that it needs a registration# or an online activation or something right? I have never installed a WinXP before. I have always had it in suchway it came with the PC before. Don't know if Dell ties their DVD disk to their PC ROM or something...S/w is s.w It just needs a valid and legal key. right? the question is.. How long can I use the PC without me entering this Key? Is it like FSX where it will kick me out after 1/2 hr? :)I just would like to install it and see if my build went ok. then I can wait another week for my XP to come in. MannyI have the mb screwed to the MB plate. I have the CPU mounted. The base of the Cooler. Yet to install the Copper cooler thingi on top. I think I need a pinch of that silver toothpaste thingi whatever compound and then spread like butter on bread? :)Need to do that.
