LCD Monitors

Featured Replies

Hi everybody,Well this is my first post on this forum so here goes.I'm seriously interested in purchasing a 24" Dell LCD monitor and would appreciate some feedback especially from people who might own one already. Does the fact this it's widescreen have any bearing on how FS9 or FSX appears on screen. Thanks,Capn Afrika

Thanx MannyLooks like one Dell 24 coming up....don't know about 3 LCD's though. Guess you gotta be keen. :) Capn Afrika

1 more vote for 3 19's, blows a single 24" out of the water in terms of the experience! I have 4 dell 19" fps and love it so far.

Manny,Would that decision have anything to do with frame rates? I'm currently considering my options regarding a new monitor for FS9 and occasional flying in FSX.I have a X1950Pro 512Mb AGP card which is a big improvement (on visuals) over my previous 9800Pro 128Mb. What concerns me is the very high resolution of the 24" display - 1920*1200. I feel certain I would lose quite a lot of performance by running at such a high res.As an alternative I am looking at 20"/21" 4:3 LCDs with the Viewsonic VP2030b one possibility. This runs at 1600*1200 and that lower resolution could help performance. The market is flooded with widescreen displays but as FS is not totally w/s compatible I'm reluctant to buy one.Cheers,

Hey Ray,I wouldn't worry about the frame rate vs screen resolution too much. I currently run FSX fullscreen across 2 1600x1200 monitors (combined by the NVidia driver, not a Matrox box) for a fullscreen res of 3200x1200 and get within 1 or 2 percent of the same framerate whether running 1024x768 windowed or fullscreen. FSX isn't pixel limited and regardless of the size of the screen, we're still pushing around the same amount of geometry and textures (although LODs might kick in differently based on pixel resolution).Timhttp://beatlesblog.spaces.live.com

I agree with Tim.Don't worry about frame rate etc.... 24" or 21" doesn't make much difference. Yeah...Slightly bigger resolution. But the system does most of the work anway... If you pan around, its able to display around you.. cause it has already done most of the work already.thats why, it doesn't matter too much when you have three monitors. The reason, I am hesitating is I feel guilty spending all this money. :(True. Moreoever, I not only have the 24" Dell, I also have a Monitor enlrager which enlarges the 24" to almost like 38" monitor. So I have pretty big window view for flying. The other thought is to get the 3 monitors for the front view and use the 24" for the left window view.Manny

Hi Tim,Thanks, that's quite reassuring. I have an old 19" CRT that, if my memory serves me correctly, can run at 1600*1200 so I'll swap my 17" TFT for it and see how things go. If as you say the frame rates are similar at 1600*1200 (compared to my current 1280*1024) then it opens up the monitor market. One half of me say's get the Dell 24" but the other half say's stay with a 4:3 display as my Concorde 2D panel would still be clickable with the mouse. Presumably if you stretch a 2D panel across the width of a widescreen display you lose that functionality?Cheers,

Thanks Manny,I'll see if a friend across the road will loan me his 24" Dell so I can try before I think about getting one.Good luck with your system. If you have the room (and money) the TripleHead system is awesome.Cheers,

Hi Tim,Interesting couple of hours. I persuaded my mate across the road to bring his Dell 2407 over. I'm pleased to say that the frame rates remained at 46 in my FS2004 test at 1920*1200 - the same as I get on my 17" display at 1280*1024. :D I also loaded Concorde and yes, the panel buttons and switched remain clickable even with the stretched 2D mode. The virtual cockpit still looks grim :-( The impact of such a big display is impressive. I feel an order is not far off. :-)Thanks!

I recently got a NEC multisync 20mxw2. I was looking for something bigger but when I saw the display quality I was impressed enough to take one home. It is very good. Got til tomorrow to take it back(Christmas exchange policy) and get something bigger but to be honest it's so good I will probably keep it. Could still get a 24" for the same money as the NEC is not cheap. Dave

What resolution are you running at? If your card is good enough it could probably run the 1920*1200 of the 24" with no loss of performance.I've ordered one and it arrives Tuesday :-)
