Stepping up from a 7950 gt ko --> 8800gtx?

Featured Replies

Hey guys. Recently built a computer with these, relevant specs.e6600 c2d2 gigs ddr2 800 ramOCZ 600w PSasus p5b delux moboeVGA 7950gt ko 512megthermaltake full size case xaser3 (card should fit)Monitor is a 26" @ 1280x720I went with the eVGA card as I prefer nvidia and eVGA has a step up program that within 90 days of purchase of original card, you can trade it in with eVGA for another product from them. Well my 90 days are up in about 2 weeks and it is time to get my upgrade.I would like to take advantage of this upgrade. I have spoken with a few people at the hard forums and they suggest either or. I really play only fs9 and would like to play some fsx if the performance jumps. Other games I play are bf2 and counter strike source. My options as far as I know are an 8800gts/8800gtx with various ram configs (not sure about at this point). With either card I will probably end up getting another 2 gigs of ram. If the GTS, probably by mid summer. If GTX probably around fall.Any ideas/opinions much appreciated!thanks,Dan

You will see a noticeable difference by changing from 7950GT to 8800GTX...I changed from 7950GX2 to Dual 8800GTX and the fps jumped by 50%.If you're using WinXP don't bother with extra RAM, you'll see virtually no improvement. RegardsJim

Jim,I have a relatively new Dell XPS (see my signature for my specs). I love my dual 7950 cards. But you say Dual 8800 cards will jump your fps by 50%? Do you think that's possible for me?Also, if you don't mind....where did you get the dual 8800's and how much did they cost?This sounds pretty good to me.

For the record - my 7950 gt ko is single core. And I only have one of them. So this would be going from a single core, 7950gt ko to a 8800 series (GTS or GTX).You can get two 8800s anywhere - newegg.com has good prices

Don't.I just stepped up from a 7600GT to the 8800GTS and while my 3D Mark 06 jumped from 3325 to 8805, my FSX performance just jumped a mere 3 points in the FSX benchmark (see topic below).Pat

I changed from Dual to Dual and you changed single cards and we haven't even discussed what processors or RAM we're usingFSX is extremely CPU intensive so your CPU has a greater effect on FPS than your graphics cardMy system was running a TH2Go (3 x 1024x768 projectors) from one card and 2 x 30" Monitors from the second card. With mid-range settings the 7950GX2 managed 15-25 fps.The exact same saved flight with Dual 8800GTX managed 25-50 fps.It's a lot of money for Dual 8800GTX and in 6 months time there will be cards that will wipe the floor with 8800GTX..but for now its the best nVidia you'll get (although I haven't seen the ATI X1950XTX working but I hear its VERY good)RegardsJim

Thanks for your responses - though im not sure if you guys are realizing my situation.I own a 7950gt ko - purchased it for about 300 bucks from newegg. I can step up via eVGAs step up program and trade it in towards a GTS or GTX. So basically I can get a GTS for current market price less 300 or GTX less 300.To say not to upgrade doesnt make sense - to me anyway.dan

Sorry Dan, your thread did get slightly hijacked..like they all do!!I WOULD upgrade (to the 8800GTX) basically they're buying back your 7950GT for $300 which is brilliant because they now sell for $250.RegardsJim

People are suggesting not to upgrade, because unless you are running a multi-monitor mega resolution setup, the performance gain is minimal and therefore the bang is not there for the buck, $300 rebate or not. It's your money and facts are facts, so if this still doesn't make sense, buy away!Gary

It might be a good idea, to pull the trigger now, if you can get it cheaply, since you may not be able to at that price later on.

Thanks

In my experience, buying anything computer-wise in anticipation of a future software capability has been an expensive and less than optimal experience, laced with strong feelings of "why didn't I wait". IMO, by the time DX10, Vista and FSX are all working together in harmony, the 8800 will be a distant (and expensive if bought now) memory, rebate or not.Gary

I see almost no reduction with the 8800 GTX. I posted some screen shots. I usual use 1600x1200 but had to lower the res to 1024x768 in order to get below Avsim's 150KB size limit.NVidia seems to be concerned more with 8800 drivers at the expense of even slightly older cards?If you can afford the 8800GTX by all means get it.>>

Well I "just" picked up a evga 8800GTX 768 (at 625/1850), from my evga 7900GTXKO.2 frames more at KSEA (went from 19 to 21). Same visual settings etc as was. 97.92 drivers installed. Same issue with textures on buildings taking a sec or two to come on in the distance. I noticed more of a increase when I went from the 7800GTCO to the 7900GTX though. I tried the 7950 superclock in OCT, I traded it for the 7900GTX.So anyways that cost me 325 a frame, and its going back tommorrow. Beside's every other game I own plays maxed out with the 7900 anyways. Might buy one later on again in the fall.I'd go with the GTS so you can put the other 300 in your pocket and/or spend it on paywear. (Based on it only costing you 90, as they are giving you 300, the GTS superclock is only 389 cdn.)Regards'Garett
