June 22, 200718 yr My apologies if this has been asked before but I need some help.I have Windows XP HOMEAthlon 64 3200+ CPU [overclocked by 10% running at 2200]Asus A8N-E M/Board [socket 939]Ati RX800 TD256E Graphics [PCI Express]3gb RamMy current cpu is working flat out most of the time and I need to get a bigger one.I have been advised that an Athlon Dual Core does not work with XP Home is that correct.?If so what is the biggest AMD single core available?Would an Intel single core fit an Asus board?Any help would be appreciated.RegardsRichard
June 23, 200718 yr lol, who told you that?any cpu will work with XP Home....Anyway, are you building it youself, or buying one from a store?If you reallllly want a cheap fast single core, system, look no further than the AMD4000 :(WOW that's cheap)http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819103037sure an intel would but I'd go with that AMD 4000 if I were you....great bang for the buck! | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |
June 23, 200718 yr Is the Athlon 4800 you are considering, suitable to fit your current motherboard? If it is, it would be a good buy!Best and Warm RegardsAdrian Wainer
June 23, 200718 yr yes I totally agree, I only suggested single cause I thought that's what you wanted to do...sorry hehe...Yeah, the 4800 (is that toledo?) is great... i love what AMD did with their prices after Intel's C2D's came out ;) | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |

June 24, 200718 yr At AMD's website they have this compatibility thing where you type in the details of the cpu you have [or want] and then it shows you the compatible M/B's.So yes the Athlon 64 4800 dual core IS socket 939 and is compatible with my ASUS A8N-E M/B. [they also do it as AM2 as well]I have found a new one.The whole purpose of upgrading is as I said because my current cpu is working flat out most of the time [even overclocked] especially when using tile proxy,so is it a worth while execise?I cannot open many applications at the same time without everything coming to a standstill which is a bit of a p***erSo my motherboard is socket 939 is there a better alternative to the 4800 either single or dual core??What about the 64FX dual core also compatible with my M/B?On a slightly differant note but maybe linked I am taking my cpu usage from the task manager. It tells me that I have 57 processes running. How can I find out if they are all needed, some are obvious but others are not. e.g.Image Nmae bdss.exe - user system - memory 21884k?Image Nmae svhost - user system - memory 31896k?Image Name svhost.exe system 3408k?Image Name msmpeng.exe system 20152k?Thanks for help guys appreciateRegardsRichard
June 24, 200718 yr With the cost of AMD cpus falling id stretch it for the 6000. Check to see if your motherboard has a bios update. My Asus M2n Has had a number for the newer processes, and now has a 6000 where before it had a 4600. I have my FPS locked at 26 and it sits mostly between 20 to 26.
June 24, 200718 yr Thanks for that, I have always shyed away from trying to update the bios as I am not really sure how to do it. I am also sure that it could do with updating. Is there a foolproof [and idiot proof] way of doing it.I shall check out the cost of a 6000RegardsRichard
June 24, 200718 yr OK have managed to update the bios all thanks to tile proxy?I have never been able to get the asus update to work but it just occured to me that if I have to disable my virus scan to run T/P would the same be true for asus update and the answer is YES. So have done it.Not that I can see any difference mind you,but I guess there must be.
June 24, 200718 yr Before jumping for that AMD 6000+ I would check out this article at tomshardwarehttp://www.tomshardware.co.uk/2007/05/04/w...u_uk/page3.htmlAlso the 6000+ is only for socket AM2.
June 24, 200718 yr >So yes the Athlon 64 4800 dual core IS socket 939 and is>compatible with my ASUS A8N-E M/B. [they also do it as AM2 as>well]>I know that. I was just warning you ahead-of-time to make sure that the 4800+ you get is Socket 939. I would not want you to buy something that would not fit in the A8N-E.>The whole purpose of upgrading is as I said because my current>cpu is working flat out most of the time [even overclocked]>especially when using tile proxy,so is it a worth while>execise? The 4800+ should help a little bit. Look at the sticky thread in the hardware forum...it has info on running processes.57 running processes is a lot. I have about 21 on my FSX rig.I think if you can get your running processes down, your overall performance in the sim and in multitasking will improve.Get 2gb of ram too.>Image Name msmpeng.exe system 20152k?>A lot of times you can Google a running process name like msmpeng.exe and you will then be able to figure out what it is, and if you need it or not.RhettAMD 3700+ (@2585 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2gb Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8 (1T), WD 150 gig 10000rpm Raptor, WD 250gig 7200rpm SATA2, Seagate 120gb 5400 rpm external HD, CoolerMaster Praetorian Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB
June 25, 200718 yr To help reduce the number of processes running Richard, search the AVSIM library for 'fsautostart' and install it.It allows you to stop programs and services running while FS is running and then restart them when FS exits. It given hints on if it is safe to stop particular services as well. There are many web sites out there with tips on how to tweak XP for best performance.Good luck in your quest.
June 26, 200718 yr >>The whole purpose of upgrading is as I said because my>current>>cpu is working flat out most of the time [even overclocked]>>especially when using tile proxy,so is it a worth while>>execise?>>The 4800+ should help a little bit. It won't be a massive fps>increase though. No matter what CPU you throw at FS, it will work flat out (well at least one core. The others, if you have more than one core, will work a variable load with FSX).
