Multiple monitor setup

Featured Replies

Re your questions:1. Can't help re TrackIR- no personal knowledge.2. When you've got your monitors set up with the popups to your preference, Save the Flight- it should reopen as you left it. Data or some gauge settings may not be saved- ex FMC settings. I keep a triple monitor flight configured and saved for each aircraft type. Open, then move it as desired to any location and set time/weather etc as you wish. Simple- no redragging! With dual monitors, why not also open another view- perhaps View Right Forward- undock/drag it to the 2nd mon. It's not difficult to align and synchronize it to the main view. Lots posted about this recently. Then you have a 135

I run my setup above with a TrackIR unit - the guages are not effected since it's just controlling the view window, which it does very nicely!

I'm going to awaken this thread in hopes that someone can help me. I finally got FS9 reinstalled and I have all 3 monitors working and the panel CFG tweaked and it looks pretty good. The only problem I have is my right monitor will not go to the same resolution at the center and left monitors. I have 2 GeForce 8500 Video cards and the resolution set for both cards in FS to 1680x1050x32. The center and right monitors are both on the same video card and the left monitor is on video card 2. The only difference between that the right monitor has is it is using the VGA output on the video card while the other two monitors are using DVI. Could this be my problem or is there a way to set the right view's resolution in a cfg somewhere?Any help would be appreciated.Glenn

Hi Glenn,You ask, "Could this be my problem or is there a way to set the right view's resolution in a cfg somewhere?"I don't know if this will help but I do know where to find the settings in the config file. Look for sections like these in your Fs9.cfg file. These are from an old configuration and are for ATI cards but you can get an idea of what to expect. Notice that each output gets its own section and that each can be configured separately.[DISPLAY.Device.Radeon X1300 Series Secondary (Omega 3.8.221).0]Mode=1024x768x16MipBias=0Filter=0TnL=0[DISPLAY.Device.Radeon X1300 Series (Omega 3.8.221) .1]Mode=800x600x32[DISPLAY.Device.Radeon 7500 PCI (Omega 3.8.221).2]Mode=1024x768x16MipBias=0Filter=0TnL=0In this configuration the second monitor was used for a 3d view only (no panels). It was set with a low resolution but 32-bit color and all the bells and whistles (Mips, filter, T&L are on by default). The first and third monitors displayed panels only (no 3d view) and have a higher resolution but lower color depth and extra features are turned off. And, by the way, sometimes I had to edit Fs9.cfg to make some changes. Like you, setting up the third monitor was often problematic within FS9.R-

Glenn- My resolution gets set in Control Panel/Display/Settings. Under the schematic pic of each monitor, there is a slider to set resolution for that monitor. Highlight each mon, then set each res.Or am I missing something in your query? We're talking WinXP?Alex Reid PS. Should add- when you've adjusted resolution here, don't forget to click on "APPLY".

Thanks for the replies. I am using WinXP and all 3 monitors are set with the same resolution. It is only in FS9 where the resolution difference occurs. It is strange, since both monitors are run from the same video card and there is only 1 setting for resolution per video card under FS9 configuration. I'll try looking at the FS9 cfg file and see if I can figure anything out.Glenn

Glenn- the resolution settings that show in FS9 options/ settings/ display don't seem to mean anything. When I click there on my secondary card, it shows resolution as 800x600- which is nonsense. It is really 1024x768 as set in Control Panel/Display/Settings.I have no idea where FS9 gets the idea that the PCI secondary card is 800x600. Must be a bug. Use Control Panel.Alex Reid

Under control panel, all 3 monitors are set the same, 1680x1050. So I'm not sure what the heck is going on. It works ok, it just looks a little crappy out the right side compared to the other two.

Is 1680x1050 a resolution that the monitor is "unhappy" with? 1680x1050 is a wide resolution- if you run 2D main panel, don't you get oval gauges? What are your monitor ratios? Can you describe "crappy" ?Alex Reid

1680x1050 is the resolution of the monitors, they are all 3 the same. Yes, it is widescreen and the gauges look just fine. FS9 has a setting of 1680x1050 so I guess it compensates for the widescreen format so things don't look out of place. It looks great, except for the lower res of the right monitor. All I meant by crappy is the right display is a little "blocky" looking compared to the other two. It isn't bad, but it is different. When moving the mouse arrow from the center to right, the arrow gets bigger on the right display too, indicating that the resolution settings are definitely different.I can live with it, but I would be much happier if they were all the same. Right now the only think I can think of is the other two are using DVI cables from the DVI outputs on the video cards. The right monitor is using a VGA cable from the VGA out on the card. I guess I could try hooking up the VGA to one of the other monitors and see if that is what is causing it.Glenn

We need Jim Cooper on this !!!! I'm stumped.I have a feeling that FS is forcing a different/lower resolution- my understanding is that the FS9 main 2D panel will only run at a 4/3 ratio resolution or you get oval gauges.Have you tried setting everything to a lower resolution?Jim? Anyone?Alex Reid

In Jim's absence let me try to 'splain what I think is confusing the issue. Alex, you say setting the resolution in Windows Display Properties (or Control Panel) will do the trick and it does for you - - - but wait! You run in windoewed mode and your FS9 resolution is the resolution set by Windows. The config file, from which my settings were extracted, was for running FS9 in full screen mode. Then the resolutions set in FS9's Options > Settings menu are used.See the difference. Because the OP mentioned setting resolutions in FS9, then I assumed he was attempting to run in full screen. Am I wrong? Perhaps so; it makes a difference.R-

Ron- well I'll be darned- my Dad always said "Son, try to learn something new every day." Today I have! Interesting. Thanks. The few times I've tried full screen with triple mons/views, things went nuts and I've abandoned the idea as not viable. Wonder if the OP is running Full Scr.? Hadn't thought of that possibility.Alex Reid

Yes, I am running full screen. I had to use windowed mode to undock the left and right views and drag them to their respective displays, then went to full screen mode and the three views filled all three screens. I'll check the displays in windowed mode to see if the view is still a different resolution.

Here is an update, and it gets weird. If I run in windowed mode with the three views filling each monitor, the right screen is the correct resolution. Of course, I have the top bar of the windows showing in this mode. Once I go to full screen, the right view reverts to a lower resolution. Strange.......
