New to ATI

Featured Replies

Hi all, I just installed a Sapphire X1950Pro 512MB AGP card on my system that used to have a Nvidia Geforce 6800GT. I notice now that I have major blurry textures and jaggies even though I have 4X AA set on the control panel. I have it setup just like I had my 6800GT card but the textures dont look as sharp and I have no AA. Any advise? Im new to the ATI cards. Thanks,Bill

I would bet your power supply is inadequate - go to the Sapphire forum at http://www.sapphiretech.com/en/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=4 for discussions on this. I have a Sapphire ATI X1950XT 512MB and it calls for 30amps on the 12v rail, my previous PSU only provided 18amps on each of two 12v rails and I was gettings lots of CTD's. I now have a PSU with 54 amps on a single 12v rail and all problems have gone. New GPU's have a high amperage demand and PSU selection is becoming a lot more sophisticated, whereby the overall wattage is not necessarily the criterion.NigelVancouverMy System:Intel Core2 Duo E6400Gigabyte GA 965G DS3 mobo Sapphire ATI Radeon X1950XT video card PCI-e 512MB with Omega v3.8.421 drivers (Cat7.10)2GB Transcend 800Mhz DDR2 RAMMaxtor 80GB 7200rpm hard driveMaxtor 200GB 7200rpm hard driveWestern Digital 250GB 7200rpm hard driveCreative Sound Blaster Live! with latest driversNEC FE950+ crt monitorCHProducts USB yoke and pedalsWindows XP Home edition with SP2DirectX 9.0©Silverstone Olympia 650W power supply with 54A on the 12v single railFive case fans

IQ is superior to the nV card--cleaner, with better AA. I am running at 6xAA/16xAF at 1600x1200x32. No jaggies whatsoever. In non-FS games, the x1950 is about 25%-30% faster. My 4y old 460w Enermax powersupply sports only a 15W 12v rail. Also on this power supply, I am running 4 15K rpm SCSI drives, 2GB of ram, and external sound card, and about 6 USB devices. Noel

Reload FSX and allow it to redetect your card and recreate FSX.cfg.Apply all your preferred settings in the sim and, in particular, try setting Filtering to Anisotropic and check the Anti-aliasing box. With FSX it's no longer necessary to force these settings in the drivers. FS9 is a different story, however. In ATT, set AA to 'Application Controlled' and Anisotropic Filtering to 'Application Controlled'. Make sure that "Enable High Quality AF" is also checked against the Anisotropic Filtering 3D menu item.Right-Click the ATT icon in the system tray and select '3D' and then 'Settings'. Under the '3D General' tab:1. Check 'Adaptive anti-aliasing'2. Set SS Mode to 'Quality'3. MS Mode to '0 Smooth'4. Make sure the 'Enable High Quality AF' is checked5. Make sure Anti-aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering are both 'Application Controlled'6. Texture Preference and MipMap Detail Level are both 'High Quality' and Wait for Vertical Sync is 'Always On'Now select the '3D Additional' tab and check all the boxes except 'Alternate Pixel Centers'. Temporal AA should be 'Disabled' and Catalyst A.I. should be 'Low' (or at least that's the way I have it)Save the Profile as 'Flight Simulator X' and in future, before loading the sim go to ATT, right-click the icon and select 'Flight Simulator X' from the 3D Profiles menu entry.Hope this helps get you sorted out. The X1950 Pro is a great card and both FS9 and FSX appear spectacular under the 7.10 drivers. I used to be an Omega fan, but had a few problems a while back with SMARTGART when I was using an AGP card. I changed to the Catalyst WHQL drivers and have remained trouble-free since, probably because SMARTGART is no longer relevant under PCI-e. Omega certainly does a great job, but I found I felt a bit restricted as he advises you not to meddle with his settings. If you do elect to change to the Catalyst WHQL (Windows Hardware Quality Lab) Microsoft tested drivers then do take time to find out the proper way to uninstall the old drivers before installing the new.Mike

Well, for whatever reason the New ATI X1950 Pro card is giving me the same thing...micro stutters just like the 6800GT card is doing. AHHH! What the heck!Ok, reformating and starting from scratch again...reinstalling FS9 as I type this message.Bill

Ok, Im still getting Microstutters when flying and taxing, especially when I turn the plane in the air or taxi on the ground. Not so much when its nice and slow, but when I give it a really sharp turn and the land is moving fast. I just dont recall my system ever acting like this before the first ever reformat. Plus Im very sure I did not do any special tweak on the drivers or anything fancy when I would have lost via the reformat. Could it be that my memory is value memory even though its 2Ggs DDR 400. But then again, my comp was running great before. Anyone else have some more insite on getting these stutters gone.I have defragged already many timesI have disabled AntivirusI have tried file indexing on and off (no luck)Thanks,Bill

If you are locking your frames, make sure it's a derivative of your Monitor's frequency, I always had better luck with my 1950XTX xfires with frames unlocked.

Thanks

Good answer, I notice less micro stutters when my sim is set to unlimted frames. When I lock them at 30 where I had it last time its like the computer does not like it and stutters...I have a LCD and its locked at 60mz, now with my ATI card i can override the mz and increase the refresh rate. What would be a good recomendation on this? I want to lock my frames at 30 frames and have the computer process the excess frames on the terrain and stuff like that. Thanks,Bill

Hi Bill,"I have a LCD and its locked at 60mz, now with my ATI card i can override the mz and increase the refresh rate"If your monitor is using the digital interface then my advice would be to leave it at it's recommended native refresh of 60Hz. Wikipedia: "LCDs employ a separate backlight to illuminate the image being portrayed by the LCD's liquid crystal shutters. The shutters themselves do not have a "refresh rate" as such due to the fact that they always stay at whatever opacity they were last instructed to continuously, and do not become more or less transparent until instructed to produce a different opacity. The closest thing liquid crystal shutters have to a refresh rate is their response time."I have FSX locked at 20fps and FS9 at 28fps. FSX runs pretty well, bar the usual caveats which plague those of us with less than cutting edge hardware. My highly customized FS9, on the other hand, runs like a dream and I wouldn't be without it. I would suggest that locking at 30fps (if we're talking FSX) on your rig is much too high and will give you no end of trouble. The sim can run quite smoothly at lower frame rates.Mike

I wonder if it could be my HD and its wear and tear...whenever it reads form the drive its somewhat loud. Not quiet like it used to be.Bill
