Hi , does FS9 take advantage of dual core CPUs?Bill

And for me that makes FS9 much smoother - FS9.1 on core 0 and ASv6.5 on core 1.Jim Harnes

I use a Microsoft command line tool from the Windows NT 4.0 CD-ROM (supportdebugi386 folder), imagecfg.exe, which permanently assigns a process (fs9.exe, etc) to run on a specific core of a multicore cpu.If a process is running, the Windows Task Manager can be used to assign it to a core. However, that is temporary, as is use of such tools as SMP Seesaw (www.mlin.net)and http://www.tomshardware.com/2004/05/28/get...buck/index.html. With the second method, you'll have to make the assignment each time a process is started. There are several threads in the hardware forum which address setting affinity.Jim Harnes

Just a variation on this query. I currently have an AMD single core CPU running at 2.4 ghz. For the most part FS9 runs quite well but it struggles somewhat with high density scenery, LD/PMDG class aircraft and lots of weather. I am looking to upgrade mainly for FSX but I would also like to see a substantial improvement in FS9. However the only game in town now seems to be multi core CPUs running between 2 and 3 ghz. So it seems to me as FS9 doesn't take advantage of multi core CPUs no matter what I buy I'm not going to get the 50 - 100% boost for FS9 I'd like.Bruceb

You'll get the 50%+ performance not just by going to dual core but by going to the C2D architecture. An E6850 will give you the performance boost you seek in FS9 and will kick FSX along quite nicely.Gary

This is what I ordered from Newegg:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116052http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157115http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145098Hopefully it will gain at least a little of performance from what I have now. I will just transfer the video card, sound card, and HD to the new setup. I don't expect crazy increase of performance, just something will will perform as good as my AMD 3400 or at least a little better. Thanks,Bill

>With the second method, you'll have to make the assignment>each time a process is started. That's not true of the utility from Tom's Hardware Guide. You merely point it to the exe and you're set. All that is required, is to start the utility first. It only has to be set up once.EwingKATLAlcohol, Tobacco and Firearms should be a store, not a government agency.MSI K8N Neo2 PlatinumAMD Opteron 185 2.6 Ghz Dual Core2GB Kingston HyperX (2X1GB) Dual Channel DDR 2-3-2-6 @ 1TXFX nVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS 256MB DDR3 AGPSound Blaster Audigy LSSilverStone Decathlon 750W +12v@60A +5v@30AFS9 on WinXPPro (SP1)

The point was that imagecfg.exe makes a permanent change, whereas the other methods require repeated user intervention, such as starting another program, etc. Not a big deal, but I like simple :).Jim Harnes

I understand, Jim. But, the way you wrote it, sounded like you have to go through a complicated process each time. While some people like the permanence of the command line method, the THG is far easier. For every program you want to assign a core, only requires a few mouse clicks. Every time you fly, just double click an icon on the desktop. What could be simpler? If at some point, you decide to change one, it's easily done, unlike the command line.Just wanted folks to know there's a simple way to assign programs to a core, without having to read a tutorial or beat Windows in to submission.:-cool EwingKATLAlcohol, Tobacco and Firearms should be a store, not a government agency.MSI K8N Neo2 PlatinumAMD Opteron 185 2.6 Ghz Dual Core2GB Kingston HyperX (2X1GB) Dual Channel DDR 2-3-2-6 @ 1TXFX nVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS 256MB DDR3 AGPSound Blaster Audigy LSSilverStone Decathlon 750W +12v@60A +5v@30AFS9 on WinXPPro (SP1)

Gents:Well, I just installed the TaskAssign and off loaded FS9 to run on the 2nd core. Gained a little more than 10% on framerates. Not bad. (I use WideFS, so ActiveSky, etc, etc are on a separate PC.)Just for grins, I did a head-to-head comparison of my new PC vs. old, and thought I'd share:OLD PC: Athlon 64 3500, 1 GB RAM; ATI X800 ProNEW PC: Core 2 Duo E6850, 2 GB RAM, 8800 GT 512MBI created identical FS9 setups on both PCs, so that evertyhing matched perfectly.OLD Framerate: ~18NEW Framerate: ~34Not a bad increase. If we could just use the dual cores....James
