Widescreen Monitors? Go or no go for FS9 and FSX?

Recommended Posts

What's the verdict with WS monitors? I could only imagine they stretch everything, making it look bad?Any insight?

In 2D yes, but in 3D (VC) all is proportional. For 2D you can either run windowed and resize the window to be proportional again or just get used to it (it's not that noticable after a while IMO).Gary

I'd say, if I were to buy a new monitor, I'd go widescreen, something like:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16824252008

>What's the verdict with WS monitors? I could only imagine>they stretch everything, making it look bad?>>Any insight?I have a 28" and a 22" running side by side - no problems at all. There's a setting in the cfg file ( IIRC its WideViewAspect or something similar ) that needs to be set to true to alleviate oval gauges, etc.I wouldn't go back!VicQ6600 G0 CPU 2.4 o/c 3.65Evga 680i A1 with P31 BIOS 2G XP2-8500 DDR2 1066FSB Mushkin 996535 RAM 5-5-4-12-2T320G 7200 HD partitioned for XP/Vista/Programs 2 - 74G Raptors in RAID0 500G 7200 HD for backup SATA DVD burner Evga 8800GTS 640 PCIx 169.13 betaKandalf LCS case w/ built in liquid cooling 850W Thermaltake power supplyVisit the Virtual Pilot's Centerwww.flightadventures.comhttp://www.hifisim.com/banners/hifi-supporter-sigbanner.jpg

I have a 30" monitor and everything is proportional in both 2d and vc mode in FS9/FSX. I run FS9/FSX at 2560x1600 resolution which is the default for this monitor. In the FSX.cfg I did have to change widescreen=false to true but that's all. Once you experience a widescreen monitor, I don't think you'll ever go back.Jim

Thanks guys. Is there any setting to convert to true in FS9, like there is FSX?I might have to just get one of these monitors.

In my experience, setting WideViewAspect=true changes the field of view in both 2D and 3D to be wider, but does not rectify panel distortion in 2D. It is most likely that those saying 2D panel distortion is not an issue have just grown used to the look of slightly oval gauges - the pixels of a 2D panel designed for a 4:3 screen must spread out more horizontally than vertically when displayed on a widescreen monitor. Try looking at a 2D panel on a TH2G system - it gets extremely stretched across three monitors horizontally but is the same as on one screen vertically.Gary

"setting WideViewAspect=true changes the field of view in both 2D and 3D to be wider"Thanks Gary for setting me straight on the FSX.cfg setting. WideViewAspect is what I mean't when I stated widescreen=true in my post. With my 30" monitor, I really haven't seen any panel distortions in 2d (have to go there occasionally as I can't change some flight settings in the VC). I remember seeing the 3 large LCD monitor setup Microsoft had at one of the AVSIM conferences and the VC and spot views were outstanding. I just can't see anyone using 2d view more than the VC but understand some do like it better. It is a bit more difficult to change headings and altitude settings in VC mode during thunderstorms as the curser is flying all over the place.Jim

Once you try large widescreens, you'll never go back to anything less than 30". I have a westtinghouse 37" @ 1920x1080 and a Dell 27" @1920x1200. The distortion, if any, is minimal. The experience UNBELIEVABLE.Abe

Some 3d party aircraft have replacement 2d cockpit textures for use with wide screens. Cant remember which, but I know I saw at least one somewhere.I have a 28" hanns-g lcd. You can get them for under 500 bucks at costco. I bought mine on sale at bestbuy. There are a few people here at avsim who own one.

Most aircraft models are designed with 4:3 panels in mind when seen in 2D view. If you use a widescreen monitor you need to remake the panel in a photo editor to conform to the resolution of your widescreen, then add the gauges by editing the panel.cfg file or FSPanel Studio (highly recommended), set the new resolution in FS Hardware settings and enjoy more panel information than you had before. Or as previously suggested, get use to oval gauges!Ken.http://www.kennair.com.auhttp://www.kennair.com.au/Images/avatars/b200pil.jpg

If you're talking about the HannsG - ignore the review - someone had a bad day. I absolutely LOVE mine - no problems, no dead pixels, all cables included, well packed. Don't know what else to say - it's worth the $$.VicQ6600 G0 CPU 2.4 o/c 3.65Evga 680i A1 with P31 BIOS 2G XP2-8500 DDR2 1066FSB Mushkin 996535 RAM 5-5-4-12-2T320G 7200 HD partitioned for XP/Vista/Programs 2 - 74G Raptors in RAID0 500G 7200 HD for backup SATA DVD burner Evga 8800GTS 640 PCIx 169.13 betaKandalf LCS case w/ built in liquid cooling 850W Thermaltake power supplyVisit the Virtual Pilot's Centerwww.flightadventures.comhttp://www.hifisim.com/banners/hifi-supporter-sigbanner.jpg
