March 21, 200818 yr Hey guys,I'm not in a position for a new computer, so I'm just going to upgrade my video card for now. I have an older m.b. so I'm stuck with using AGP cards. Do you guys have any suggestions as to what the best to buy would be. I've been given a budget of only $100. HELP!

HELP!Honestly, I would save the $100 toward when you re-build the whole computer. You are probably bottlenecked by your cpu anyway in FS. That means no matter what vid card you put in there, it will perform about the same--unless you're running a GeForce4 series or something very old like that.I'd save your money for now. If your budget is only $100, you'd be disappointed in just about any video card you would get for that money.RhettAMD 3700+ (@2585 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2gb Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8 (1T), WD 150 gig 10000rpm Raptor, WD 250gig 7200rpm SATA2, Seagate 120gb 5400 rpm external HD, CoolerMaster Praetorian Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB

My guess is you might find these for free in somebody's junk box !No plans here to upgrade my "Smithsonian" class system.Alex Reid
March 22, 200818 yr Well you can get a Geforce 6800 for 100 bucks if you are running anything less. Check out Newegg.com Manny Patel
March 22, 200818 yr yeah but I'm completely with Rhett here, why spend 100 bucks for MAYBE a .5% or 1% improvement?What card do you have right now?a newer card would only allow you to run higher AA and AF levels at a higher resolution, and you'd still be limited by the AGP bus | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |
March 24, 200818 yr I put an x1950 Pro AGP 8x in my older box and I tell you the IQ was superior to my old 6800GT by a mile. It was an excellent, quiet and decent card for the money. But as others are saying, if you can wait and afford it pick up a new E or Q penryn, and 8800GT if you're on a budget, some cheap DDR2 PC-800 or 1066 memory, and you're good to go. Just do the math on the multiplier and FSB to see what will work the the CPU you buy.QX9650 w/ Retail HSF|8GB Muskin PC-6400|ASUS P5E|EVGA 8800GT @700|Seagate SATA 2 x 4|Seagate Cheetah 15K.x|XP Pro|Vista 64--soon to be installed Noel System: 9900X3D Noctua NH-D15 G2, MSI Pro 650-P WiFi, G.SKILL 64GB (2 x 32GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR5 6000, WD NVMe 2Tb x 1, Sabrent NVMe 2Tb x 1, RTX 4090 FE, Corsair RM1000W PSU, Win11 Home, LG Ultra Curved Gsync Ultimate 3440x1440, Phanteks Enthoo Pro Case, TCA Boeing Edition Yoke & TQ, Cessna Trim Wheel, RTSS Framerate Limiter w/ Front Edge Sync. March 24, 200818 yr I still say best bet is to save for a new cpu/rebuild.The remark about FX5xxx series, let me tell you, I own that exact 5-series card, I have it in one of my boxes. It is not sufficient for FSX. Flat out. If you're running it on a 2nd monitor, for FMS's or moving maps, etc. then it would be fine. But for a main FSX display card? Well, I wouldn't do it. I use my eVGA 5-series card for GoogleEarth and it does that fine. The 6800 card for $100. Sure that would work. In fact I have high regard for 6800 cards, they were amazing. But as Ryan points out, is it worth the small % of gain you would get? As I said, the rig is probably cpu bottlenecked anyway. And that's the prime consideration...cpu bottlenecking.RhettAMD 3700+ (@2585 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2gb Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8 (1T), WD 150 gig 10000rpm Raptor, WD 250gig 7200rpm SATA2, Seagate 120gb 5400 rpm external HD, CoolerMaster Praetorian Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB
