March 26, 200818 yr Well, I went back to an x9 multiplier and set the FSB to 370 to get a precise 3.33 GHz, but running Prime95 put the temperatures at 98C and it started throttling and shutting down programs, including virus protection. Idling at 56C was too high. Now I need to know if it's still a safe speed for FSX without overheating or if I should go back to 3.2 GHz (which I'm doing for the moment) until my father and I get some liquid cooling, which should be soon. I got no errors on Prime though. So should I stay at 3.33 or go back to 3.2?Update: I also think it might be my VCore. I put it to Auto because I had no idea what to put it to for 3.33 GHz. I use 1.35 for 3.2 and it works flawlessly, temps in the low 80s with Prime95 and no errors. Idling in the 20s and load with FSX in the 50-60s.Thanks, Regards, BoeingGuy ASUS P5E X38 | Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 3.2 GHz on 1600 MHz FSB (400x8) | 4 GB DDR2-800 RAM | EVGA GeForce 8800 GT Superclocked @ 679/979 | 320 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 RPM HD
March 26, 200818 yr Overclocking is an art and a scienceif you dont know how to do it.. even if manage to overclock and remain stable, the HEAT factors will make you run worse than if you did not clock at all.you do not even have to enter the danger zone for heat to make memory,. CPU and video cards run WORSE. it takes experience to clock correctly. It does work and it will make MSFS run much better but you need to learn how to do it right.
March 26, 200818 yr www.ocforums.com is a good place to learn. Use the stickies in the Intel CPU forum.
March 26, 200818 yr There is something VERY wrong with those temps, you should not be getting anywhere near that temp at that low of a voltage, try re-applying your thermal paste because something is not right.
March 26, 200818 yr Where does your reading come from? Are you sure you're getting the right readout? Anything above 80C is usually a trip to the store for a new CPU...
March 26, 200818 yr Author My reading comes from CoreTemp. I thought the C2Q couldn't be hurt since it shuts down before it can. And I'm saying Tjunction temp, not Tcase. I've reset it to 3.2. With liquid cooling, what speed can I expect to overclock to? 4 GHz+? March 27, 200818 yr As others have said, those temps are way too high. My Q6600 @ 390x9 = 3.5GHz @ 1.40V runs full load at 65C, FSX at about 53C and FS9 at around 46C, and my CPU cooling ain't the flashest. Auto voltage does more than just turn up your CPU core voltage, it turns up everything (and likely is the cause of you super heat problem). Try running manual voltage setting of say 1.40V and leave everything else at default and see how your system goe at 370x9.Re likelihood of 4GHz, with a G0 Q6600 you'll be lucky to get much further than 3.6GHz and liquid cooling may buy you another 0.1 - 0.2GHz. 4GHz+ is 45nm CPU territory I'm afraid.Gary 9800X3D | 4090 | 64GB | 2+1TB NVME | 2TB SSD | 2TB HDD | 85/50/43” TVs | Quest 3 | DOF H3 Motion Rig | Buttkicker | T.16000M Flight Kit MSFS @ 4K Ultra DLSS Performance FG 80 FPS | VR VDXR Godlike 80Hz SSW | MSFS VR DLSS Quality, Ultra Preset - Windows 11 Acer Nitro 5 | i5-11400H | RTX 3060 6 GB | 32GB DDR4 | 15.6" FHD IPS 144Hz | 2 x 512 GB SSD | Windows 11
March 27, 200818 yr That's toasty. Did you put thermal paste on the CPU?I imagine the P5E's bios setup is 'bout the same as the P5K's . . . and would be able to handle a Q6600 At Least as well. Set the FSB to 400, Vcore to 1.4v and leave the rest in auto. Leave EveryThing else in default/auto. Use CPUZ to monitor Vcore. I'm suspicious of that cooler. Water will only get you the same performance as a Thermalright 120. There's simply no need for water over good air. If you are going to spend more money on better cooling, go with the thermalright 120 and caulk that thermaltake up to science. With these settings, and the thermalright, my Q6600 sits at 3.6ghz 24/7. Prime 95 spreads the Tjs between 72C and 82C in a 25C ambient room. FSX leaves the Tjs at 62-72. There's no magic *at all* about O/Cing a Q6600 with an Asus P5X board and the Correct air cooler. If there is, it is to Not mess with the bios settings other than the FSB and Vcore.BTW, the CPU was working correctly. Intel has this feature so it will not have to replace an out-of-control server farm's worth of CPU's . . . or yours either.
March 28, 200818 yr >Where does your reading come from? Are you sure you're>getting the right readout? Anything above 80C is usually a>trip to the store for a new CPU...Zip, that's not true, unless you mean cuz you're not happy with the CPU because it runs hotter than it should. There are thermal protection routines so you will never "fry" a cpu because it reached a temp of over 80C.QX9650 w/ Retail HSF|8GB Muskin PC-6400|ASUS P5E|EVGA 8800GT @700|Seagate SATA 2 x 4|Seagate Cheetah 15K.x|XP Pro|Vista 64--soon to be installed Noel System: 9900X3D Noctua NH-D15 G2, MSI Pro 650-P WiFi, G.SKILL 64GB (2 x 32GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR5 6000, WD NVMe 2Tb x 1, Sabrent NVMe 2Tb x 1, RTX 4090 FE, Corsair RM1000W PSU, Win11 Home, LG Ultra Curved Gsync Ultimate 3440x1440, Phanteks Enthoo Pro Case, TCA Boeing Edition Yoke & TQ, Cessna Trim Wheel, RTSS Framerate Limiter w/ Front Edge Sync. March 28, 200818 yr I have the same mainboard and it does have BIOS's that display temps incorrectly. I think it took 5.01 to restore correctly output temps on my penryn. 5.02 had an issue with temps on my cpu. Go to the ASUS forum for more info. I think there is a new beta since 5.02 but since all's well with 5.01 that's where I'll stay.QX9650 w/ Retail HSF|8GB Muskin PC-6400|ASUS P5E|EVGA 8800GT @700|Seagate SATA 2 x 4|Seagate Cheetah 15K.x|XP Pro|Vista 64--soon to be installed Noel System: 9900X3D Noctua NH-D15 G2, MSI Pro 650-P WiFi, G.SKILL 64GB (2 x 32GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR5 6000, WD NVMe 2Tb x 1, Sabrent NVMe 2Tb x 1, RTX 4090 FE, Corsair RM1000W PSU, Win11 Home, LG Ultra Curved Gsync Ultimate 3440x1440, Phanteks Enthoo Pro Case, TCA Boeing Edition Yoke & TQ, Cessna Trim Wheel, RTSS Framerate Limiter w/ Front Edge Sync. No way should it get that hot unless the cooler is not working properly. My system has been stable for months now and at max load on all 4 cores I don't get above 66C.FWIW, I had the system at 4GHZ stable Prime95 6 hours just to see if I could get there but 3.6 was my stable goal and that's where I am.Don't have the link handy but go to the Arctic Silver website - there's some great info on the right and wrong way to apply thermal paste to a quad chip. Most people out it on wrong and way too thick. When I o/c'd my system I had never done it before. Read a lot, downloaded several guides and asked a lot of questions here and the overclocking forums. Patience and methodical steps will pay off. You have the right hardware, just need to tweak it slowly.Good luck,VicQ6600 G0 CPU 2.4 o/c 3.65Evga 680i A1 with P31 BIOS 2G XP2-8500 DDR2 1066FSB Mushkin 996535 RAM 5-5-4-12-2T320G 7200 HD partitioned for XP/Vista/Programs 2 - 74G Raptors in RAID0 500G 7200 HD for backup SATA DVD burner Evga 8800GTS 640 PCIx 174.12 XG 702/1620/792Kandalf LCS case w/ built in liquid cooling 850W Thermaltake power supplyVisit the Virtual Pilot's Centerwww.flightadventures.comhttp://www.hifisim.com/banners/hifi-supporter-sigbanner.jpg RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160
March 28, 200818 yr Yeah, go ahead and turn that AI setting up another 2%. Its going to be worth it. LOLYou may need water cooling from a Seagrave before you're done.. :)http://img172.imageshack.us/img172/5438/cpu005cr5.jpg
