January 18, 200917 yr I'm a bit nervous about wading into this thread (I hope nobody replies to this starting by saying "with all due respect.."). I think DDS textures are a bit different from DXT. Namely DDS textures are upside down. I know using DXTBMP if I want to save a texture as a DDS file I need to use the flip vertical function otherwise all my textures appear upside down in FSX. I believe DirectX prefers textures in this format and any DXT textures would have to be inverted before being displayed and thus introducing a bit of a processing delay. How much that delay is I don't know but every bit counts.LOL! I probably would be too if I just read this thread for the first time.Yes you are correct, DDS does flip the image however I think the pipline flips the image twice anyway as I recall so that operation is going to happen no matter what is going on in the texture. Also, FSX always looks for <filename>.DDS before <filename>.BMP therefore adding operations to the sim if they are all converted to DXTx.bmp.Not a good thing to do from that perspective alone :(
January 18, 200917 yr This thread is the kind of thing that I see more and more in this forum and especially in the hardware forum. People are getting their "credentials" and "qualifications" questioned all the time. Sure we should always verify and question advice we get or give--but that should go without saying. There is nothing gained by bushwhacking each other all the time publicly. Your Mileage May Vary is not just a trite phrase, it is gospel when it comes to this stuff, but we all know that, we have been around a while.Every one of you in this thread has 10x more knowledge than the average flight sim person, and none of you should have your "creds" questioned at any time, and that includes you paul, Kendall, Matthew S., Sam, Nick Needham, Gary Dunne, Gerald Salden or any one else for that matter. I know some of you guys have 20+ years in the sim and in tech like me and so there's no purpose to all of the wee wee contests, and the 'my prop is bigger than yours' type of thing.I'll quit preaching now, sorry about that. I just get frustrated when I keep seeing it spoil otherwise good threads lately, and I want the AVSIM forums to be a happy and good place, and it should be with all of you fellas knowledge and skillsets. And p.s.--my asbestos suit is firmly zipped up in case anyone is mad at me now -- I am smiling as I post, thinking about white bunny rabbits hopping around in warm green meadows. January 18, 200917 yr Good Morning! You`re preaching to the choir, Mace! :( As with emails - the problem in a post is one of choosing the exact wording necessary to convey your intended message - including the tone and/or emotion, and because we come from diverse communities and cultures - many times something is written that will upset someone who - face to face - would normally be quite un-offended by a particular phrase, or would be quite mild and inoffensive during that conversation. At the time I think MatthewS didn`t recognise that his choice of wording might, or would upset anyone, because it would be his normal way of conversing. One "smiley" in that sentence would have totally changed it`s tone, just as you`re " white bunny rabbits" and "warm green meadows" conveyed your objective emotion beautifully. And for that I thank you: it was a post from the heart. :( i7 [email protected] | 32GB RAM | EVGA RTX 3080Ti | Maximus Hero VII | 512GB 860 Pro | 512GB 850 Pro | 256GB 840 Pro | 2TB 860 QVO | 1TB 870 EVO | Seagate 3TB Cloud | EVGA 1000 GQ | Win10 Pro | EK Custom water cooling.
January 18, 200917 yr ...and FS does not ...prefer DDS to DXT (and DDS is DXT anyway, just in a DDS wrapper.)You're right about DXT and DDS being unrelated. I've seen a lot of posters confuse a file compression scheme (DXT) and a file format (DDS). While the compression schemes allow one to balance performance against quality, the DDS file format does offer performance with no penalty to quality. The DDS file format simply stores the file already flipped so the video card doesn't have to. So FS may not prefer DDS...maybe it might be better to say FS allows the more efficient DDS format to be used.Ron

I was not going to say anymore on this subject but quite frankly the violins and butterflies approach to the real world does not work.Yes we should all aspire to try and be nice and respectful to each otherIn reference to Matthew and how I posted. I gave him the opportunity to back off on the aggressive way he was posting. He chose to ignore that and continue. What I posted was clarified to him and the same behavior ensued. I don't care what country he is from and there was no language barrier involved here, that was obvious. We can all have differences of opinion and we can discuss those even with a passionate approach at the same time!.. however I do not twist someone else's words and meaning to try and make an argument work for me and I do not set out to try and discredit anyone. But quite frankly if I have confirmed someone is being disrespectful and I have tried to approach that person with respect and the disrespectful abuse continues, undertone or up-front matters not to me, I will address it and will not be chastised, disrespected, or put up with silly deceptive games which attempt discredit people or put words into their mouth, and especially feeding a technical forum pure BS when the user posting it knows what they are posting is BS to try and make their point/statements look correct. That has nothing to do with who has the bigger 'pee-pee' Mace.. thats horse manure, bad manors and quite frankly deceptive... pure and simple! It's no secret I can be very direct.I do not care what anyone here or anywhere else thinks about that either! :(I will add this.. after going back and reviewing what I posted I see that the way I posted to GSalden was not in the spirit of what he was trying to convey and my response came at a time where I was quite frankly fed up with Matthews aggressive disposition and not in just this thread/forum, for that I do apologize to GSalden . Otherwise what I posted to Matthew was not in ANY WAY out of line and in correct form for how I was being addressed.Cant we all just get along? Absolutely! But there will be times (all the time on this planet) when that statement simply does not work because the real world does not function on a utopian level and most likely never will.Forums are pretty much nothing but opinions for the most part.. and we all know what opinions are :oWhich I will venture to say why MS professionals stay out of them.. they do not want or need to be told anything by a bunch of people who feel a need to show their technical 'pee-pee' or fire off a smart mouth attitude. Now That's the REAL WORLD! LOL!!!!Love it.. or leave it :( :(
