OOM with Vista Ultimate 64-bit (when loading a/c 32-bit textures)

Featured Replies

Hi there,I recently installed Vista Ultimate 64-bit. I have done so based upon findings in this forum about suffering OOM. It has been a month now and I can say that it has worked out quiet well. I don't have to worry about pressing Alt+Enter and switchto the windowed mode if I choose to. Or get a blue screen after 2 hours across the atlantic. Until now. I transferred a large portion of data (NL2000v3) from my Flight Simulator partition to another parition on the same harddrive. After that FS9 wouldn't start properly and I even got a OOM message. I decided to format the partition and do a complete re-install of FS9. It seems to work well now, but I discovered an issue that I hadn't come across before; during the re-install I decided to take the 32-bit textures of complex add-on aircraft (PMDG 747-400 and SSTSIM Concorde). Once I select any of these aircraft in the start-up menu of FS, I get an OOM message. The funny thing is that if I start her on any of those aircraft installed with DTX3 textures, she runs just fine. I use Nhancer, but no matter what selection I make (either AA&AF or none of it at all) the problem comes back. Hope someone can help.Stephan W.v.E.My system is:Asus P5NE-SLi Intel E8400 E0 @ 3.6 Ghz2x2GB OCZ Reaper 10668800GT Nvidia 182.50 driversNhancer 2.5.1 installed WD Raptor 74GB with O/S Vista Ultimate 64-bitMaxtor 250GB with 4 partitions

Is your EXE large address aware? Meaning, did you patch it for the 3GB switch. This was discussed in depth a while back. A 32bit application (such as FS9) will still only see the first 2GB unless you patch it (even on a 64bit OS). Mind you 64bit is much better at memory managment and you will rarely see an OOM error, using the LAA patch will help it even further...

Aaargh! Does this mean that if I get 64 bit XP my FS9 would go all funny? (Please bear with me I know nothing about programming type stuff)I keep reading that 64 bit runs FSX better, and I have just got a new PC with 4Gb DDR3 RAM: something about having too much keeps cropping up in the forum. Also, I have decided not to use Vista, and decided that I will get 64bit XP, but stumbled across your comment which was like a slap in the face.Have I chosen correctly?

No slap in the face 64bit is far better at memory managment than 32bit. I switched with some apprehension but do not regret this choice at all. My FS9 flights have never been better.... 32bit applications should have the EXE patched to be LAA.

Ooh good, thanks, btw I have no clue what the last line means

Here's an article on how to do it:http://forums.simflight.com/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=70063You don't need to mess with the OS part as that is mainly for 32Bit OSes, but the portion on modifying the FS9.exe file is the part that should be done.I'm trying it this weekend to see what happens.

Thanks for your reactions. Yes I do have the LAA flag activated. I decided to do a complete OS reinstall. It looks promising, I did not had a OOM sofar. Just a thought; the OOMs started to appear a few weeks ago, after I had switched from an E6600 to a E8400. I know that a complete OS reinstall is not required for just a new processor but I can't explain why I would suffer a OOM in a 64bit enviroment. I hope the issue won't return.

I had odd OOM issues when I swapped out my old 8800GTS for a new GTX260 a few weeks ago with no explaination. A clean install later and now I'm flying fine. Odd how stuff like that can cause problems.

Hmmm, I was under impression that no patch is needed to manage virtual memory issues if you have Vista-64.

32bit applications (such as FS9) are still limited to 2GB of address space (remember this has nothing to do with your physical ram or page file). Under a 64bit OS this limit may not be reached under most circumstances as 64bit OS is much better at memory managment than 32bit. BUT a 32bit application can still run OOM due to the 2GB limit even if it is on a 64bit OS.Unless you tell the 32bit EXE to look beyond the 2GB limit it will not use it.I ran FS9 on my 64bit OS and did not get any OOM errors on flights that I would have gotten them on my 32bit OS. That being said some others who know far more than I do said you still need to patch the exe to look beyond the 2GB limit.I have done so and have had no ill effects.A 64bit OS is the best addon I have ever gotten for FS9........ :(

I have Vista-64 and I have never patched FS9.exe. I have OOM-free environment with tons of scenery stuff and other monster-planes such as PMDG planes. Perhaps, it's FSX folks who should worry about excessive virtual memory load.

I used to agree but have since researched it in depth and now know that 32bit applications can not see anymore then 2GB of the address space.Like I said I never had any OOM errors since the switch to 64bit, but the fact is a 32bit application is still limited to 2GB of adress space no matter what version the OS is. 64bit is above and beyond 32bit when it comes to memory managment thus the reason you and I are not seeing OOM errors now.BUT!Others have had OOM errors on 64bit and once they applied the LAA patch to the FS9 exe they did not get the problem any longer. You were also part of this discussion.....http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtop...16&hl=64bit

True. But again, I have never patched FS9.exe in Vista-64. I have so many addons installed that side effects are almost guaranteed.
