May 10, 200917 yr Looking at the following system (built from Cyberpower) to replace my fried Alienware (36mos old and died in a power surge), please comment:Key Components:CPU: i7 965 Extreme 3.2 GHz 8M L3 Cache LGA 1366 factory overclocked to 4.0GhzPowersupply: 2x 1000Watt units (Sigma Monster)MOBO: Asus P6T intel X58 chipset SLI/CrossfireX Mainboard triple channel DDR3/1600 SATA RAID w/eSATA GbLAN, USB 2.0 IEEE1394aMemory: 6GB DDR3/1800Mhz triple channel memory module (Corsair)Video: NVidia GeForce GTX285 2GB 16xPCIeHD: RAID-0 2x150GB Raptors 10000rpm SATA-II 3.0Gb/s 16MB Cache WD15000HLFSCooling: Asetek Liquid CPU extreme cooling system/extreme silent at 20dBA + 3 additional case cooling fansO/S:Windows Vista Home Premium w/service pack 1 (64-bit)My plan is to run FS9 and FSX--nothing else.Couple questions:2000watt power supply was originally intended for quad-SLI GTX295s, figure 1200watts should be plenty for above? What's the difference between Vista Ultimate 64-bit and Home Premium 64bit?ThanksR.Perry

If you truly just want to run FSX get a 920 I7 with the D0 stepping, x58 classified mobo and 1 GTX295 , ram don't matter to much long as its atleast 1600 - 6 gigs. You can overclock the 920 to 3.8 entirely on Air. FSX is extremely CPU dependant and does not take advantage of SLI or Crossfire. But hey if you got the money.

Personally, I'd go with a single 300GB Velociraptor instead. If you do go with a RAID, the quality of the RAID controller is important...most of the consumer-grade controllers, including (especially) those mounted on the mobo, aren't anything to write home about. And overclocking with a RAID controller as part of the equation can be a special brand of data-corrupting a** pain.If you've never used liquid cooling before, do some reading up on it and ask questions--what kind of warning system if the pump stops working, reliability (pumps are a notorious problem area), warranty, and maintenance requirements.Ask about the timings on the RAM they're using. All 1800MHz DIMMs are not created equal.I have Vista Ultimate--I know I have some access to system settings that Home version users don't, but I can't do a comparison. Ultimate will do disk encryption and backups too.On an OEM-built system I'd want to know more about the case--number and placement of fans, noise level, and access (side door, removeable panel etc etc).Good luckBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO Bob Scott | President and CEO, AVSIM Inc ATP Gulfstream II-III-IV-V Sys1 (MSFS20+24/XPlane12+11): AMD 9800X3D, water 2x240mm, MSI MPG X670E Carbon, 64GB GSkill 6000/30, nVidia RTX4090FE Alienware AW3821DW 38" 21:9 GSync, 2x4TB Crucial T705 PCIe5 + 2x2TB Samsung 990 SSD, EVGA 1000P2 PSU, 12.9" iPad Pro Thrustmaster TCA Boeing Yoke, TCA Airbus Sidestick, Twin TCA Airbus Throttle quads, PFC Cirrus Pedals, Coolermaster HAF932 case Sys2 (P3Dv5/v4): i9-13900KS, water 2x360mm, ASUS Z790 Hero, 32GB GSkill 7800MHz CAS36, ASUS RTX4090 Samsung 55" JS8500 4K TV@60Hz, 3x 2TB WD SN850X 1x 4TB Crucial P3 M.2 NVME SSD, EVGA 1600T2 PSU Fiber link to Yamaha RX-V467 Home Theater Receiver, Polk/Klipsch 6" bookshelf speakers, Polk 12" subwoofer, 12.9" iPad Pro PFC yoke/throttle quad/pedals with custom Hall sensor retrofit, Thermaltake View 71 case, Stream Deck XL button box Sys3 (DCS/P3Dv4/ATS/ETS): AMD 7800X3D, MSI MPG X870E Carbon, Noctua NH-D15S, 64GB GSkill 6000/30, EVGA RTX3090 Alienware AW3420DW 34" 21:9 GSync, Corsair HX1000i PSU, 4TB Crucial T705 PCIe5 + 2TB Samsung 970Evo Plus, TM TCA Officer Pack, Saitek combat pedals, TM Warthog, TM RS300 FF wheel/pedals, Coolermaster HAF XB case
May 11, 200917 yr I would say get a new D0 stepping i7 920 - most people are reporting 4.0Ghz+ with those babies...Hell my 920 C0/C1 stepper is running at 3.8Ghz no problem..Also the PSU you have specified is WAAAY overrated. I would say a quality 750W would be more than adequate! :(
May 11, 200917 yr yeah I too would change a few things:Asus revamped their P6T with the P6T v2, get that one instead:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...mp;Tpk=p6t%20v2A solid PSU, Corsair, PC Power and Cooling, Thermaltake:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817703009Skip the liquid cooling, HSF's these days can do almost as good as liquid if not better, get this cooler:http://www.crazypc.com/products/ultra-120-1366-50985.htmlWith that HS youll be able to clock a 920 on D0 stepping to 4.0The GTX285 is what you want, the 295 is essentially two cards in one, and you only want one powerful cardhttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814130442Also a single velociraptor will do the trick. | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |
