External Hard Drive and FSX

Featured Replies

Hello,First, I want to apologize if this question has been, I have searched the forums to see if I can get an answer to my question but I am unable to find anything related.I plan on running my FS9 and FSX from an external hard drive (Maxtor OneTouch4, USB 2.0 with a 720RMP and 16MB Cache Buffer) because my OS hard drive is getting rather full and performance is decreasing. My question is if I run the simulators from an external hard drive, will it greatly impact the performace of the simulator itself when running?Thank you.

The transfer rate through USB 2.0 is a lot slower than a normal hard drive, which will most likely kill FSX performance.

If you want FSX on an external drive, eSATA is your best choice. The performance of most eSATA HDDs is very similar to internal hard drives, and the transfer rates are amazing.

You should definitely have a 7200rpm HDD with SATA2 interface, but it HAS to be connected to PC via eSATA port. But it requires You to switch AHCI mode ON, which is not good for FSX (but AHCI + eSATA is much better than IDE emulation without eSATA).As an addition switching AHCI on/off requires re-formatting (there are workarounds, but does not work well).

Hi,I have had no problems in running FSX on a USB2.0, 300GB Maxtor,7200rpm, 16mb cache. I also moved FS9 over to the USB drive and have noticed no difference from when it was installed on C drive. I did this for the same reasons you mentioned. regards,Carl

Hi,I have FSX installed on an Maxtor 7200rpm USB 2.0 200 gig hard drive. As far as I can tell, it is running just as smooth as when i had it installed on my desktop IDE 7200 hard drive. Your milage may vary. But, on my system, its ok.rrroberttt
