Strike Finder

Featured Replies

While I'm on a panel modding spree, are there any strike finder gauges available for FS9. Or is there a way to make one myself? Perhaps a finder that at least simulates lightning detection in thunderstorms.

The Reality XP Sandel 3308 gauge has strikefinder capability, as well as being an excellent HSI, route display, and many other features. It is a very fine gauge that I've put into a number of my light planes.DJ

It looks good indeed. I was looking more along the lines of a simple strike finder, like the BF Goorich stormscopes. But this only proves it is possible to build a strike finder! :(

It only proves that it's possible to build a fake simulated strike finder by some clever coding... :(

One nice thing about xplane-it has one default and works great. Been needed in the fs world forever!

FS doesn't have a real one because there's zero access to that info from the sim.It was requested by developers and the basic response was that the lightning is a totally random process and has no 'position' information to pass.

That is too bad-especially when the technology has been around for many years...

Yeah, that's why i used the word "simulated" in my original post. As for *simulating* the lightning strikes, I guess it'd be simple enough? :(

Zac,You install the gauge, and fly 10,000 hrs in all the thunderstorms out there (I can see you taping (at first) the gauge and banging it (later on) thinking it is not working) and when you do get zapped, you will not have any 'evidence' it ever happened, unless you were recording, LIVE, with FRAPS. It will never show in any 'replay' as the lighting is reset and you will need another 10,000 hrs to MAYBE get zapped a second time. Perhaps the routine of filling up 500 Gig hard drive with '*avi' footage, formating it, filling it up again, might not convince you to 'give it up'. In this case...do to do do, do to do do, whaaaaa-Twilight Zone. (You can drive yourself insane with such 'sur-real' fantasies - ZAP!!).Chuck BNapamule

Sorry to bring up an old post.Chuck, I believe you misunderstand what a strike finder is: It's a real life device showing lightning strike activity (and sometimes other phenomena) which of course is a product of thunderstorms. This device is very useful, especially while IMC with embedded thunderstorms (I HATE that kind of flying). Each lightning discharge shows on the device's screen as a dot or "+".I just thought it'd be neat to simulate.
