June 18, 200916 yr wow thats slightly alarming that they dont even tell the passengers...Hmmm... imagine being on a flight where they announce the pilot has just died. A great recipe for mayhem, unexplained behaviour from the true pessimist, probably a more dangerous situation than the unfortunate death of the pilot. June 18, 200916 yr http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/06/18/pilot.dead/index.htmlThis will stir the 60 vs. 65 retirement argument for air carrier pilots.Incredible and sad event.32 years as a pilot. Aviation was obviously a love of his life. Talk about "dying with your boots on"!RIPBraun
June 18, 200916 yr Even if there had been no other 'third pilot' who could sit in the seat (which apparently there was), I suspect it would not have presented a major problem. ATC would probably give the guy some spacing so he had more time to set stuff up working on his own.Either way, with a single pilot or a relief pilot sitting in, there would be little point informing the passengers, as them knowing about it wouldn't change anything other than unnerving them needlessly. After all, most of us flight simmers know that you can work an airliner on your own if you have to, and a professional pilot, with ATC assisting them, would not have had any problems getting down in one piece.Shame the guy died of course, but I guess he went doing the thing he liked and will never be so old as to be forced to fly a desk. We probably won't all be so lucky as to manage that.Al Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here
June 19, 200916 yr that is a sad event for the co pilot, and the pilots family ......... I hope it was a peaceful as for reporting it to the pax ...... it's probably better not to worry them.Besides what would he say ? hello passengers , this is your captain speaking , I started out as the copilot but have just been promoted...?????????if it were to become an emergency you can be sure they'd announce something appropriate
June 19, 200916 yr I don't see the point in informing the Pax, that to me would seem somehow disrespectful to the departed. 777 FOs normally are pretty experienced and normally are not some early 20's 500hr cookie cutter grad. So flight safety should not be a issue. Glad that the crew responded well and everything worked out. RIP Capt. Brandon
June 19, 200916 yr Author Early 20's cookie cutter? And what the hell is wrong with that? I rePREsent that statement, thank you... ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
June 19, 200916 yr Early 20's cookie cutter? And what the hell is wrong with that? I rePREsent that statement, thank you...He could have the following problems:A: be about 65 and passed the pilot-by-dateB: on his period.either way, Ditchdigger, that statment wasn't really needed...
June 19, 200916 yr Author It was rhetorical, thanks anyway. :( ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
